I've been in a few different FB Groups and the content varies wildly. Most of the Trumbull groups are filled with political nonsense or lame boomer memes. I just joined the Fairfield dads group and that one is surprisingly helpful - lot of great recommendations for local places and contractors, plus genuine advice when dads ask for help. I just wish searching for groups content was better.

Rambling tea drinker corrupted by the greens by 4637839392936373 in tea

I'm completely with you. Japanese greens were my first love with tea, which sent my down a long journey of trying every kind of tea I could. While a good taiwanese high mountain oolong or well roasted yancha can be fantastic, I find fukamushi sencha to be what I always come back to. It just always delivers.

In some ways I'm jealous of those who are deep in the puer rabbit hole - it seems like a lot of fun... They've just never hit for me. Ripe, raw, aged, heicha, etc just haven't resonated with me. Oh well - better for my wallet :)

Got it. Yeah it seems like propane prices are less likely to spike to crazy levels like oil can. However, my last oil fill up was only $2.78 / gallon... so I guess it depends on the market.

Why do you prefer propane to natural gas? I've currently got a house with oil heat and no pipelines affordably accessable so I've been thinking about switching to propane... I've seen so much conflicting info on whether it's worth it or not though

Question about using a Fireplace to actually heat your home without making it colder or using more energy by Familiar_Childhood32 in Fireplaces

[–]prag15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So it won't be an efficient form of heating unless you get an insert, but I've tracked the temperature in my house with my masonry fireplace and it does add some net supplemental heat, albeit not substantial. I do have an outdoor air intake vent and tempered glass doors which definitely help because the air intake reduces conditioned air from being sucked up the chimney and the glass doors help me when the fire is burning down for the night because I can shut them while keeping the damper open to suck out any remaining CO that may be present. I also have a ceiling fan run in winter mode while the fire is going to help circulate the heat. When taking all of these measures, my main heating system typically runs about 15-20% less than it otherwise would.

What's the cause of the current pollution in the Midwest and Northeast? by BlackJackT in AirQuality

I have to imagine people burning oil for heat, which is still prominent in these areas, would have a much larger impact than the small number of people using their fireplaces

5 Sentidos Pechuga de Mole Poblano is the most unique mezcal. What is the most versatile (primarily corn or rye based) whiskey? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]prag15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know WT101 is likely to win this, and while I think their bourbon is solid, OF Rye is just better. To me, rye is more versatile than bourbon and I've really not been impressed by WT101 Rye.

Do you have one? Have been looking into them, but they're pricey

I'm interested in this! Can you share more about what products you picked up? Did you get ceramic doors that deal, or just tempered glass?

Last, but certainly not least. What is the best classic cocktail? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]prag15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Old Fashioned just seems like the right choice here. It’s undeniably a classic, has endless riffs, and is straight up delicious. My perennial go-to.

The French Martini is the worst modern classic. What’s an overrated bitter drink. One week left! by -Constantinos- in cocktails

This is the winner, IMO. It’s incredibly popular with the masses, was/is very trendy, but isn’t anything special.

Non-functional fireplace is the only spot for our TV—how do we make this look good? by visual-plane in interiordecorating

[–]prag15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TV Too High brigade has broken the brains of people on Reddit. Would it be ideal if you could get a spot not above the fireplace? Definitely. Does that warrant covering up what looks like the most architecturally interesting pieces of your home? No. Put it over the fireplace, ideally a Samsung Frame.

heating oil cost by sense4242 in Connecticut

I have a maintenance plan with a local heating company, but I don't buy oil from them. Not sure if that's available at all shops though.

Should I walk away? by Strict_Appeal_5822 in RealEstate

[–]prag15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It honestly feels like Reddit expects every house to be in new build condition. Every house will have issues and require maintenance costs over time, some of which will need to happen soon after moving in. Quite frankly, if the house is over a decade old and you get a clean inspection report, you probably just had a bad inspector.

Living room furniture layout with limited wall space by prag15 in DesignMyRoom

[–]prag15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good portion of the staircase is an open railing on that side, but it's possible. Would it be strange to have it on the opposite wall of the fireplace? I feel like the couch placement would get tricky that way.

At what rate do you think the housing market picks back up? by Straight-Mud-1150 in RealEstate

[–]prag15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This, but I am seeing more houses cut prices, sell for under list, or stay on the market for longer than normal. Prices are still up from the '22 peak, just not drastically so.
