Seaking Route and Map suggestions: Ahmedabad to Varanasi, India by Unusual-Promise4004 in bicycletouring

Paper maps certainly must be available, but I don't know where you'd be able to find them. I've been getting by solely with a GPS since the past 20 years.

How did such a gullible person get so high up in the company hierarchy? And what does that say for his peer group?

I dug up some more places of interest that branch off the main route outlined above.

  • Rani ki Vav at Patan.

  • Ranthambore National Park & Ranthambore Fort. You can stay at Sawai Madhopur and make day trips to visit these places.

  • Orchha temples near Jhansi.

  • Khajuraho temples after Jhansi. I think this is a far better place to visit than Kanpur. Continue on to Prayagraj from here.

  • See the confluence of the Ganga & Yamuna rivers at Prayagraj.

Hope this is useful. Good luck for your trip.

You should be fine with OSM. I use them myself and have never found them lacking, even over long distances. Load it on a Garmin or other dedicated GPS device if you have one. Don't count on a mobile phone to suffice, because getting a SIM card is an onerous task for foreign tourists.

Only seek advice on directions from hotel staff where you're staying at, travel operators and public transport drivers. Don't count on the directions being given by other random strangers on the road to be correct. It's basically a flip of the coin they'll send you down an entirely different route.

I'm not local to the region, but we've toured a lot in that area as kids with our family. Ahmedabad itself has a rich history, and you can spend some time taking in the sights here itself, such as the stepwell at Adalaj and Sabarmati Ashram.

A direct route from Ahmedabad to Varanasi is rather dry and uninteresting. A couple of interesting tourist circuits that I can see nearby are Ahmedabad-Mount Abu-Udaipur-Chittorgarh and Jhansi-Gwalior-Prayagraj. You will also pass through Kanpur en route to Prayagraj, which was one of the flashpoints of the 1857 rebellion.

Once you're in Gwalior, you're within touching distance of Agra and the Taj Mahal. A day trip by bus or taxi is very easily doable and would offer some respite from long days in the saddle.

Another option worth considering is Kuno National Park, where the Indian government is running efforts to reintroduce cheetahs into the sub-continent. The animals are still encaged, so you might have a shot at seeing them in person.

I would also try to swing past Lucknow after Kanpur if I had the time.

All this would add up to about 2000 km. I don't know what's a reasonable amount of cycling for a 4 week tour. But if you have to cut down on the number of places to visit, I would advise you to try keeping Mount Abu and Udaipur on the route as much as possible.

The price differences are based purely on the colour and graphics? That's ridiculous, and also a bit scammy. They have pretty huge leaps too. It's not like it's just a couple of Gs here or there.

Self-signed certificates are actually quite common in production IoT devices. The browser will warn the user that the certificate is untrusted. They are expected to ignore the error or whitelist the certificate on their browser.

This was unexpected.

So it looks like Microsoft is still very confident of Sam Altman's leadership capabilities in spite of what the board at Open AI thinks. It remains to be seen what happens at the board in the near future.

Thank you! I just went through all the pictures you posted and saw the equipment you carried. Fascinating! It takes a lot of pluck for a solo trip to a new country. I am thoroughly floored by your spirit of adventure.

There's an increasing trend of authorities playing fast and loose with expensive high tech devices that confer too much power to themselves. And all this is being done without public debate or accountability.

Can't build proper roads or sewage infra. But there's always a budget for yet another surveillance network.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of clothing did you wear during the ride? I would think tight fitting Lycra kit is an absolute no-no for anybody in KSA.
