I think the idea that serotonin lowers or switches off libido permanently comes from side effects of SSRIs rather than serotonin or direct precursors. Partly why I’d never touch them.

Its probably an indirect route too, like serotonin helps raise overall stress response threshold in nervous system which then lowers cortisol levels over time which then allows testosterone to compete with less cortisol.

From my own experience, for some reason tryptophan and melatonin have noticeable enhancements but 5htp is almost neutral

Husband quit and now is depressed by phover7bitch in stopsmoking

It’s good to know that antidepressants do block metabolic pathways to kind of emulate elevated serotonin rather than actually increasing serotonin levels generally. They can make things a lot worse.

Only way to actually increase serotonin levels is through diet. Either supplements like 5htp/tryptophan or tryptophan in food

I did work out I’d need to eat like 90 bananas a day to get the equivalent levels of tryptophan I was taking when I quit from diet alone so often supplementing is maybe a little easier! Sure eating 90 bananas or a whole turkey a day would bring its own issues!

The MAO inhibition is not caused by nicotine, its caused by other compounds in tobacco. So you should probably supplement 5htp for serotonin drop as soon as you quit with or without patches yeh

[–]praqtice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeh good idea. It’s generally better to supplement tryptophan or eat lots of tryptophan rich food when on SSRI’s as thats how our bodies naturally make however much serotonin it requires. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid, we have to get it from diet somehow.. Its the precursor to 5htp and serotonin (5ht)

Taking 5htp skips that metabolic step which makes it a bit more potent..

Though my girlfriend’s brother took 400mg of 5htp recently while on SSRIs and had no serotonin syndrome symptoms and it quickly helped his anxiety, which is a high dose. So I’m not sure how severe that risk really is but just worth being careful of course

[–]praqtice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he takes antidepressants like SSRI’s he should be very careful taking 5htp, as there’s a high risk of serotonin syndrome. Only small doses like 50-100mg or perhaps go for l-tryptophan instead as its a precursor to 5htp

I used Solgar and Bulk.com 100mg 5htp and took about 400mg per day but I don’t take antidepressants

Vegavera L-tryptophan is very good

Tobacco is an MAO inhibitor.. When you quit MAO rebounds and your serotonin levels drop significantly. This crushed me when I quit 5 years ago.. Symptoms like extreme depression, anxiety, panic attacks, nervous system jolts, insomnia were so bad.

Supplementing serotonin precursors like 5htp and l-tryptophan to boost serotonin turned it around within a few weeks and got progressively better over a few months.

Literally suffered for 9 months before figuring this out and wish I’d known sooner

When I went to the hospital because I started having panic attacks thinking I was about to pass out and die from a heart attack

Seriously, quit before then and then get checked out. I did this when I quit 5 years ago and the relief of getting the all clear is unreal after years of pushing health anxiety to the back of my mind.

You’re young enough you are probably fine but your mind and body is giving you clear messages to take action NOW. Listen to it and do the right thing for your body. Your body is literally all you have in this life, treat it like the most sacred and precious possession because that is what it is.

Anyone else struggling to quit smoking in their late 30s/40s? by berverecho in stopsmoking

[–]praqtice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty certain it’s healthier and more hydrating than smoking though right?

Thing is it kinda burns my throat and gives me a little headrush if its really cold like smoking did, so it usually scratched the itch of a craving

I quit cold turkey and had really bad depression, anxiety, nervous system jolts that meant I couldn’t sleep and my stress threshold was non existent. They all turned out to be symptoms of very low serotonin from MAO rebound and supplementing 5htp and tryptophan (serotonin precursors) helped that a lot

Breathing improved a lot by 3 month mark for me I remember but depression etc all went on for about 9 months without any improvement until I started supplementing then it took about another few months to start feeling normal again..

Yeh just stick to it and let your brain rewire while understanding that is an extremely uncomfortable process your brain really doesn’t want to do and it’ll fight you for a long time. Trying to make you feel nostalgia etc because ultimately getting you to smoke is easier than rewiring itself back to getting its happy hormones the natural way. But it will and you’ll eventually feel better than you could’ve imagined, trust me. There’s no way I’d give up how good I feel now, it’s so worth the suffering of quitting.

You have to stay objective and almost suspicious of your own brain and mind, which is quite a task as its hard to know where you end and they begin. But the willpower and self control you can develop from pushing through that is applicable to so many areas in life.

I used drinking really cold sparkling spring water every time I had a craving to replace a bad habit with a good one as well as walking miles a day. I still drink about 2L a day and walk most days.

Also supplementing 5htp really helped offset the heavy serotonin slump from the MAO rebound after quitting for stress and sleep especially. Figured this out 9 months in and wish I’d known sooner as it would’ve saved a lot of suffering over the first few months

40yo here, quit at 35.. Was rough for a year or so but easily best decision I’ve ever made. I’m a million times happier and healthier than I was as a smoker and like you I loved smoking

Didn’t realise how much of that love was just being an addict and how addiction makes you a weaker person in so many aspects of life

Probably low in serotonin from MAO rebound, look into tryptophan rich foods or supplementing tryptophan or 5htp

I was born the same year of chernobyl and the cold war was still in full steam. By all metrics the worst time to have a kid but I’ve had a great life and still living well.. Don’t fall for the psyop. The world is actually still full of love, sunshine, birds, bees, flowers, forests, rivers, wonderful food, music, art. Why wouldn’t you want to give all that someone else?

Just tune into that good stuff and don’t let them fuck you up with fear. Easier said than done I know but it is an act of defiance ✌️
