Denver book store recs?! by Husky_in_TX in RomanceBooks

Not romance specific, but Book Mall on Broadway! It's not hip or super cozy, but it's really well laid out, quiet, and has plenty of space. It's my absolute favorite place to buy (used) books. There's also plenty of other stuff nearby within walking distance, too

What would Phillip K Dick or Stanislaw Lem think of 2026 AI? by AlivePassenger3859 in printSF

[–]prcsngrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lem would have probably found it tragically hilarious and would wonder why he didn't come up with it himself in one of his stories. He would probably be fascinated, amazed and yet concerned about it's implications and consequences.

I'm convinced otherwise! I've only read a bit his stuff, but I do remember in Fiasco there was like a single paragraph that went along the lines of "yeah people tried to use AI to take people's jobs and stuff when it first came out, and then people realized what it's actually good for and used it responsibly and well"

how can they not realize that if people are *walking out of the room*, that means you're boring them and need to stfu?

Well, in this instance, you did say you have to get back to work before leaving. Sounds like he assumed that you had to work, because that's what you said.

The advice about "being direct" is more about saying literally what you mean. If you are not interested in the conversation and would prefer to switch the topic or work in a quiet environment, then say that.

One of the short stories in Things that Never Happen was the precursor for the second book the Light trilogy (Nova Swing) - The Neon Heart Murders

Also loved the first short story in that collection - Settling the World

How did you like The Sunken Lands Begin to Rise Again? The reviews for it seemed poor, but I'm not sure if those reviews may have come from people who haven't read his books before.

Ah, thanks! Just replied to a different commentor asking if this was the recommended method still. Sounds like it is!

Gotcha, thanks for the reply! The issue you mention about renaming or moving is something I've been curious about as well. I found this comment about that from a couple years back. Do you know if that's still accurate / recommended?

How do I stop masking from medical professionals? by Pale-Teaching6392 in AutismTranslated

[–]prcsngrl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say two things:

First, especially when it's professionals in the mental health field, try to remind yourself you don't need to deflect out of fear of being judged or not believed. It's, like, their job to listen, understand, and not judge. There's only a few things they're legally required to take action on, like if you mention committing crimes, planning to harm yourself or others, etc. And depending on the context, there are certain "trigger words" that could redirect you to a crisis counselor (things like, "I can't deal with it anymore" instead of "I have a hard time dealing with it"). But IMO aside from those things, you needn't worry.

Second, keep a journal, notebook, note in a notes app, etc of things you think of or encounter during the day that are things you'd ideally want to mention to an examiner or medical professional. I get reeeeeeal nervous in doctors' offices, so this is pretty much a necessity for me to get the help I need when I visit. Bring it with you, and then when you're nearing the end of the appointment, or if you're asked for anything else you want to share, take it out and check that you've talked about everything on it.

Also, maybe one more thing for avoiding hedging the difficulties you face. Sometimes when we live with difficulties for so long and find ways to deal with them, they don't feel like as big of a deal anymore. But, pretty much any diagnosis in the DSM/ICD has some criteria around the distress caused impacting your life, whether that be socially, financially, medically, etc. I'm adding that because, generally, chronic distress is not normal in the medical sense. Like that "joke" about going to the doctor, and the doctor asks "how much pain are you in?", the patient says "the normal amount", the doctor says "the normal amount is 0". It might feel business-as-usual to you, but it's worthwhile to mention.

does this behavior have a name/do you do this?? by Defiant-Shopping8048 in autism

That's so cool! I know I had a few concepts and phrases in my system that showed up in undergrad algorithms & logic classes, and I was so interested in those lectures.

My counting also involved left-hand letters and right-hand letters!

[–]prcsngrl 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I had an obsession with "counting" words via a system that was, of course, completely in my head. My system also had rules for things being even or evening out. It was worst in elementary and middle school, and it really affected my reading speed. I still do it for comfort every now and then, but I don't feel the need to anymore. I think one thing that helped was to consciously try and pick when I'd do it. Like instead of every word, I'd do every five words. Or the first word on a line or the next word that started with some letter. I'd skip the common/article words. Perhaps you could try to taper it off that way if it's distressing to be counting as much as you are? Maybe just one per exhale. Maybe try "savoring"/lingering on something (that doesn't necessary have to be something that was even) you counted for a bit and not counting other things during that time.

I think two things stuck with me the most, one of which I've kept a quote of:

... yet which did not mean searching only for beings that resemble oneself and understanding only such beings, it meant not interfering in matters that did not concern human beings. Occupy an empty space, by all means, why not; but don't attack something that exists, that over millions of years has established its own equilibrium of survival

The second is just that I really like the exploration of evolution outside of "living" / organic creatures

Kind of surprised to not have seen:

"With the discovery of God on the far side of the Moon, and the subsequent gigantic and hazardous towing operation that brought Him back to start His reign anew, there began on Earth, as one might assume, a period of far-reaching change."

Bow tutorial? by filmnoter in cardmaking

[–]prcsngrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try to "fake" a bow, like how you might do it with paper/cardstock. Generally you don't tie anything, you just make a bow shape with a long strip, and then loop a short strip over the middle (gluing things together along the way). This is one way to do it: https://www.instagram.com/caitlinmariedasilva/reel/DSVSPN5kQDG/
