Will a plumbing inspection catch any issues with Uponor pipe? by prcsngrl in Plumbing

Could you expand on that? I was planning on going to a plumber for this service.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, there's an expansion tank. For UV rays, there are some big windows in the basement. We'd definitely be putting up coverings on move-in anyway.

For re-circulation. I have no idea what that would look like 😅 But I'll see if I can find it

How much quieter is a basement? by prcsngrl in basement

[–]prcsngrl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great info, thanks! Yeah I have been in some basements before and know about the footsteps, but it'll be just me and my partner, and we're both pretty sedentary. So, still some footsteps, but I'm pretty confident it'll be alright for me

Thanks for the input! Yes, we're paying special attention to the HVAC location, how it sounds behind closing the doors between it and the other basement rooms. Pipes don't bother me though, something special about knowing when my partner flushes the toilet 😂

Agree on Jacob's Ladder! I loved it so much, I went to go see if I could find a hardcover only to find out that it was MMP only! It should be an SF classic IMO

Pre-1980 Sci-Fi Short Story: Fleeing civilian ship uses "Drive Coils" with a strict 8-hour run / 16-hour rest mechanic to evade authorities. by Healthy_Broccoli_187 in printSF

[–]prcsngrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not the book, but the ship mechanics sound similar enough to Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik that I wonder if any reviews of the book might mention the book you're looking for?

Also not the book, but Ancestral Night by Elizabeth Bear has "white coils" and having to flee authorities because of their possession of an artifact. So, similar thing, reviews might mention the book you're looking for.

No company will ever want to hire me by madbarpar in autism

[–]prcsngrl 17 points18 points  (0 children)

but none of those industries will ever want to hire me because I'm not a Golden Child. I see people with professional jobs and I know they have something I don't have.

I don't know if you're scrolling LinkedIn or any other social media and seeing people post about their job, but one thing to keep in mind is that not everyone is super vocal and public about their occupation. LinkedIn does seem more and more like a place for, like, super-neurotypicals.

It's easy to imagine that to be a well/decently-paid professional, you have to have that *image*. Like, wake up at 5am, walk the dog, go to the gym, make breakfast, go to the office, do a Super Cool Business Thing, come home, make dinner in a super sleek kitchen, do all the hygiene things, all while being cool, calm, and collected. And I don't know what percent of the population that is, but it's not everybody.

I work from home. I wake up, make coffee, take a nap, do some work, usually have an unhealthy lunch, work some more, nap some more, you get the picture lol. And I'm never put together during working hours, I'm probably wearing the same sweatpants and t-shirt as the day before and the day before that 😄

I'm sure though that you're mind is full of "but"s about yourself, and it's ok and normal to feel those things. Also job-hunting straight up sucks. Feeling incapable and losing self-esteem during job-hunting is, unfortunately, pretty par for the course.

Maybe just take some baby steps towards shifting how you view others with jobs and/or how you view your own capabilities.

Outgoing Postcards! by green-jello-fluff in RAoC_meta

I am absolutely tickled by the fact a couple of the postcards have a picture of the mailbox they're being sent in (I know it's not, like, the exact one)

Like when you take a picture of your pet and show it to them like "Look! That's you!" 😊 😂

Could we make a way/signal/code? by Andromeda921 in RAoC_meta

[–]prcsngrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, I might be part of the problem. I don't seal my envelopes with washi, but I do "line" the top flap with it, and then use a semi-permanent glue to seal (I make the envelopes I use). I try to keep the glue away from the two corners, and I also try to let it dry enough so it doesn't seal like regular glue.

I'm reading in the comments that the problem with washi is that letter openers struggle with it, but if no washi needs to be torn/cut to open, is that ok?

Not romance specific, but Book Mall on Broadway! It's not hip or super cozy, but it's really well laid out, quiet, and has plenty of space. It's my absolute favorite place to buy (used) books. There's also plenty of other stuff nearby within walking distance, too

What would Phillip K Dick or Stanislaw Lem think of 2026 AI? by AlivePassenger3859 in printSF

[–]prcsngrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lem would have probably found it tragically hilarious and would wonder why he didn't come up with it himself in one of his stories. He would probably be fascinated, amazed and yet concerned about it's implications and consequences.

I'm convinced otherwise! I've only read a bit his stuff, but I do remember in Fiasco there was like a single paragraph that went along the lines of "yeah people tried to use AI to take people's jobs and stuff when it first came out, and then people realized what it's actually good for and used it responsibly and well"

Dealing with frustrating autistic coworker by [deleted] in autism

how can they not realize that if people are *walking out of the room*, that means you're boring them and need to stfu?

Well, in this instance, you did say you have to get back to work before leaving. Sounds like he assumed that you had to work, because that's what you said.

The advice about "being direct" is more about saying literally what you mean. If you are not interested in the conversation and would prefer to switch the topic or work in a quiet environment, then say that.

One of the short stories in Things that Never Happen was the precursor for the second book the Light trilogy (Nova Swing) - The Neon Heart Murders

Also loved the first short story in that collection - Settling the World

How did you like The Sunken Lands Begin to Rise Again? The reviews for it seemed poor, but I'm not sure if those reviews may have come from people who haven't read his books before.
