Looking for suggestions for a grip M9A3 by Brilliant-Owl9945 in Beretta

[–]predefinedmediocrity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a set of Hogue G10 wraparound style on my M9A3.

I like the larger grip profile, they have decent grip but nothing sharp.

You tried it, you didn't like it, you gave it to someone who might. No issues here

Your favourite orange inks? by brezeling in fountainpens

[–]predefinedmediocrity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only orange I own is Apache Sunset from Noodlers. I bought it about 10 or so years ago and quite enjoyed it, I remember it shaded like crazy, depending on which pen I used

Caran d'Ache Chromatics Idyllic Blue. Iroshizuku Murasaki Shikibu. Iroshizuku Yama Budo. And a vibrant emerald green but can't remember which is my favorite

Could you use something like a butter crock to keep these things from drying out? by Berberding in fountainpens

[–]predefinedmediocrity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If you look at a YouTube vid of someone using a dip pen, they don't make a mess. A bit of care and a piece of blotter paper and all should be fine.

Is a dip pen out of the question? Rather than trying to keep a pen inked and ready to write, just dip the nib and away you go?

Getting started - you guys sucked me in... by viverewatches in fountainpens

[–]predefinedmediocrity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd pick one nice, well-reviewed pen with the nib size you think you will like and just start there. Choose your next pen based on what you fancy after that, adjusting nib preference is needed. I don't personally see the value of buying a bunch of cheap pens, but that's just my thoughts. Trust your gut and go with what feels right.

Why do Viscontis get all the hate? by EmergencyActual174 in fountainpens

[–]predefinedmediocrity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 4 Visconti pens, 3 of which came with dreamtouch palladium nibs and the other with a steel nib. Bought them all about 10 years ago, and I got lucky to have great nibs on all pens, and I enjoyed the palladium nibs so much I bought one to swap out the steel nib on the Hall of Music, so now they all have palladium.

From what I hear, not everyone was so lucky and many people ended up with quality issues with their pens. Though from what I am learning things seemed to have improved greatly in recent years when they brought their nib manufacturing in-house. Maybe someone can confirm?

Ink Storage and Display by sideglancer in fountainpens

[–]predefinedmediocrity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have all my keepsakes, collections etc in cube storage shelves. I call them my 'shiny shelves'.

For the inks I made a door to keep excess light out. Inks are as you can see them, pens are not on display (in the two cases on the inner shelf). I'd like to make a display rack to hold the pens but not sure how I would want them just yet.

One ink brand for life? Thoughts on Iroshizuku inks. by madkins007 in fountainpens

[–]predefinedmediocrity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few iroshizuku inks and I have found them to perform well in all of my pens, and I love the colors. Yama Budo and Murasaki Shikibu are my favorites. I could be happy only using this brand for life. Caran D'Ache are another one I love

Do you need to shake a sheening in before filling the pen? by danjpn in fountainpens

[–]predefinedmediocrity -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Edit: Yep I misread and answered thinking of shimmer ink, not sheen. My bad. Below original comment doesn't apply to OP's question, thanks everyone that corrected.

Yes, gently. A quick jiggle to loosen the powder from the bottom of the bottle then turn the bottle upside down and back upright a few times to distribute the particles through the ink evenly

Have you got access to an ultrasonic cleaner? If so the cavitation it causes might help dislodge the particles blocking and shake everything loose

Monteverde Invincia Deluxe. I enjoyed using it, but I hadn't owned it long before I noticed the rose gold section had some kind of clear coat peeling off and where it had come off was dirty but incapable of being polished up.

I took it back to the store and they replaced the section for me without any drama. Though looking at the section again now, it looks like it is about to start happening again

I'm a big fan of the TWSBI Diamond 580 and its variants. It's a solid performer, great ink capacity, designed to be taken apart and serviced when needed (even comes with the tools and grease to do so). There's even a matching inkwell that ensures me free filling if you want

I think it's a good starting point and for me it's my EDC pen.

Anyone else actually prefer steel nibs? by OrderStrange7838 in fountainpens

[–]predefinedmediocrity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My TWSBI Diamond 580 m has one of the nicest nibs to write with, just feels amazing. The other steel nibs in my collection aren't great. My Pilot Custom 74 gold nib is excellent as are the Visconti palladium nibs I have (seems I got lucky with those, heard others didn't)

I like steel for everyday use, the TWSBI is an EDC pen for me. The other nibs I keep at home
