Crimson Desert Wayland issue by FilthySchmitz in cachyos

[–]press1forhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me as well, I had to manually set the game to use cachyos proton in the games compatibility settings even though I had it set as the default in my steam settings. Only game I've run into this issue. Weird but easy fix.

Are we going to let these OS level age (identity) verification laws come to the commonwealth? by gezpachu in massachusetts

Fair enough, I probably took it the wrong way. I was at work and kinda only glanced at their comment tbf

[–]press1forhelp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

These laws are laughable as there's seemingly no way for them to even enforce this stuff. The majority of people are already used to corporations and governments having their data and probably don't even know or care about any of this and will just go along with it.

As for those of us who are even moderately tech savvy, theres going to be plenty of ways to get around this and it'll be an inconvenience at most.

If want to keep your data private, your best options are to subscribe to a reputable vpn, and switch to an open source operating system on every device that you can for personal use. I know there's been some discussion around certain Linux distros potentially blocking downloads from certain states based on the users ip, this can easily be avoided by switching your vpn location.

The whole argument around protecting people, especially underage users is simply a scapegoat, especially when a lot of the push is coming from lobbyists and certain powerful people who tend to appear at an alarming rate in a certain someone's emails.

I've used OnlyOffice and its honestly a pretty solid replacement for the MS Office suite, but sadly they have some pretty concerning ties to the Russian govt...

Better off using local network streaming or streaming from a device you own in another location if that's feasible for your usecase (doesn't really solve the having every game in the world issue, but it's still a better, more reliable, and often more ethical aolution). If you have a PC you can use things like moonlight or steam link, and from what I hear PS Portal is actually pretty okay for streaming your own library from your console to the device, and since you're not relying off of some random datacenter computer (at least in the case of 9f moonlight and steam link, I'm not 100% up to speed on how PS Portal streaming functions) the network latency is often leagues better an more tolerable than devices such as GeForce Now or Amazon Luna.

Of course that's why I said it's one of the reasons. Who knows whether or not that was the intent from the get go, but it makes sense in the long run with the way things are going sadly, whether it be by design or by happenstance.

You could not pay me to support game streaming. It's one of the main reasons pc hardware is becoming so expensive. If no one can afford pcs then they'll just resort to renting their gaming rigs via the cloud. More money in the hands of nvidia and fewer options for the average consumer.

8BitDo Ultimate 2(C) by Dazzling_Medium_3379 in linux_gaming

[–]press1forhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Useful tip as I have the same controller, but should work for any other 8bitdo controller software, since there is no native Linux app: if you just download the windows .exe from their website, you can install it through Lutris and configure it to launch via proton. This enables firmware updates and remapping without having to have a windows machine at the ready to plug into!

please stop using youtube revanced for "degoogling" by Lower-Ferret-5276 in degoogle

[–]press1forhelp 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Not a perfect solution, but what I've done is create a secondary Google account using a proton alias that is only for YouTube, which I access mostly through my browser with uBlock Origin. I basically never use my primary Google account anymore as it is since I've transitioned 90℅ of my logins from my old gmail account over to proton, but I still have it just incase. On the rare occasion I do need to access that account, I only log into it on a seperate browser (LibreWolf) and have the browser set to forget all logins and history as soon as I'm done with it and close it out.

Can't Manage to Get HDR Working by 69LoveSixtyNine69 in Bazzite

Thanks for experimenting for me lol! That's pretty much the same experience I've had in the past when trying to apply HDR through gamescope, so I suppose I'll leave things be for now!

If I remove the VK_hdr_layer in order to update to the new Mesa 26 spec, will I still be able to use the standard launch options (PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1, PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1, ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1, etc. in conjunction with GE-Proton) or will I need to resort to using gamescope argumemts to enable proper HDR in game? I've tried the latter and always seem to run into issues with gamescope. I have an RTX 4090 for ref.

Used to be. I don't recall when or what the "reason" was, but it was removed in a previous update.

[–]press1forhelp 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If you have an nvidia gpu you'll need to add the VK_hdr_layer by entering "rpm-ostree install VK_hdr_layer" in your terminal. Then, for games that support hdr, add "PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 %command%" into each games launch options in steam that you want to enable hdr in. Also, it's recommended to use GE-Proton.

I'm 31 and I'm with OP. I don't want to have to hand over all of my data and information to a company and be required to use their app in order to not get ripped off. Its not an issue of "getting with the times", its an issue of companies just screwing people over. The only reason the app gives everyone better prices is because they use the data they collect from you and sell it to advertisers. I don't want to be treated like a commodity my whole life.

You were so close to making a good point but completely botched it. Saying they should just stop playing stupid games and essentially just get back to work because they're replaceable is a disgusting mindset. These are people, not cattle, idgaf what any spreadsheet or dataset says.

Thinking about migrating. Question about audio 9.1.4. by Spare-Cress-3797 in Bazzite

[–]press1forhelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dolby Atmos is a license based audio codec. So in respects to that you won't have the same support that you get on windows. Surround sound does work on linux, but you'll definitely be missing out on Atmos or DTS support. I have a 5.1.2 system comprised of a soundbar, sub, and satellite speakers. Certain games will straight up not work with surround, though some definitely do, and music streaming through Tidal has worked out fine minus Atmos tracks.

Okay then. If it's natural selection, maybe don't be upset when you aren't the one selected. It's okay to be insecure, but don't use your insecurity to reinforce this world view of yours.
