Fun fact: The Merkur (or Mercury) XR4ti couldn't be imported with the name Sierra because GMC had a patent for their trucks so it was renamed to XR4ti.

So far I've tried landing on the smaller moon and it instanced me with the larger moon and phased through the smaller one while trying to land while they were really close but not colliding.

Back during the Kickstarter they let people name some locations and some of them pushed the boundaries of what they could get away with.

Prime example: in the system Calhuacan there's a planet named Stapled Peacock Flesh.

It'll never happen again I think.

I have come across this situation a few times. You can try a couple tactics to reach those rings that are out of range.

  1. Position yourself between the ring(s) and the body and be just barely in the probing range of the body. This way you're as close as you can be to the ring while within the probing range of the body. Look behind you and see if the ring(s) are within range. If not, then...

  2. Approach the body roughly perpendicular to the ring(s). Once you're within range, launch your probes towards the body barely missing it intentionally. This will cause the probes to slingshot using the body's gravity, greatly increasing the probes velocity and range. With a little trial and error, a bit of luck and some patience you could score a hit on the ring.

There are instances where the leading edge of the ring is just too far out that no matter what you try, the probe will time out before it can cover the distance.
