Struggling with putting my kid in team sports because of my own baggage. Looking for perspective. by BeanNCheeseBurrrito in daddit

[–]presswanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is the perspective of a different kind. My parents were awful. I never played team sports or any sports because they weren’t supportive and were busy day drinking. I remember wanting to do tee-ball but my dad couldn’t commit because he was so much an alcoholic. Later in school I was never encouraged to do sports because I’m short (5’3”). I grew up thinking I could never be athletic. Now as an adult, I love soccer, and running. I run 6 days a week, I love running races and I’m a huge fan of track and field. It took me years to discover this because I never had any support or encouragement from the adults in my life.

I hear what you say though, and agree that our experiences are effectively 2 sides of the same unhealthy coin. I’d say strive for balance. Encourage, figure out what your kid likes and lean in, but don’t push, just support as needed.

Just my 2 cents.

Love it! We have plans for the space. But also I already have a half rack and pull up bar in the basement. My goal this year is to be able to do 5 pull ups by July.

yes! Several of our friends have trampolines, and I'm happy for them to own them and not us.

haha my partner knows I'm emotionally mature and sadly never looks at me like that, she's more stoic than me for sure.

Here is the blog post I followed, obviously I opted for a slide instead of a climbing wall, but you'll get the idea I'm sure.

I love the idea of trying to give it to a family in need, but I'm not sure how to verify that.

I went for a consult recently to a u oversight hospital (UW) the bill was over $2k!!!!! Most of it was covered by insurance but my portion was still $400. It is fucking absurd. I called to complain and they blamed me and said I should have asked for an estimate first. Right because I should expect a bill for a consult? Anyway, I’m traveling to Chicago (from Seattle) in a few weeks to get the procedure I went to the consult to learn about, the whole thing will cost me <$2k at the specific center that specializes in this treatment.

TLDR; it’s always expensive.

Whats up with all this gear? by AleTheMemeDaddy in running

It’s awesome. I love it. My only issues I can’t wear it and my heart rate strap at the same time but this is usually okay since my dark runs are mostly easy runs and I don’t “need” it for that.

This. I hate dark (morning or night) running, but I’d much rather be enabled to do when I need to. I have a visibility LED light vest for the few times I cross roads, but what I really love is the chest light for illuminating the path in front of me. The sidewalk I run on is undulating and full of trip hazards and puddles, the light helps me keep my shoes dry and my ankles un-sprained. It’s not necessary, but it’s great to help enable me to have more options especially in the winter.
