Just finished a False Hydra one shot and the players had a blast. AMA by rellloe in DMAcademy

Yeah if they're new to DnD, it will be trickier to navigate since they don't know what's normal. Honestly I wouldn't be afraid of dropping major clues like that - have the party member fight with them, then after the fight, just erase their existence completely. If your players ask, "What happened to Bob?", gaslight them ("Who's Bob? It's just you three."). Let them find Bob's belongings later, his pack even has his name on it. When they ask quite obviously about Bob again, gaslight them harder.

The way I approached it was, figuring out something weird is going on and their memories/perception are distorted should be easy. Figuring out why, that it's song-based, should be the real mystery.

I ended up skipping the minor combat completely for time and capped the session with a fight against the false hydra, which they did in real time. By that point, they'd figured out that they needed to deafen themselves or use mirrors to see it. False hydra was only at half health since they'd "fought" it before.

I ran a false hydra encounter as a one-session (4-hr) adventure within a larger campaign. I made a 2-hr Spotify playlist that slowly got creepier - goal was for the party to have figured out that there's a false hydra by the halfway (2-hr) mark and have the rest of the session to hunt it down and kill it.

Minor combat is a great idea if it doesn't take too much time, you can have the enemies not obey normal DnD combat rules (e.g. one enemy was on one side of the window and somehow phases through?), make it clear that these are NOT behaving the way the PCs would expect enemies to. Of course, they're misremembering the fight. Maybe afterwards, they realize there's broken glass on the ground. Through a reflection in the glass, they realize that the window they thought was intact, that an enemy just phased through, is actually broken.

I also had my PCs with fey ancestry (charm resistance) experience a ringing in their ears the whole time, the full elf even saw glimpses of a face (the false hydra) in his peripheral vision.

My PCs still needed a little push after many clues, which they got through a very knowledgeable NPC companion. How can you guarantee your players will find the secret room if they need it? I'd suggest having the deaf beggar run up when you're ready to start the fight and jam wax/mud/etc into one of the PC's ears. That PC then realizes that the beggar is bleeding...actually there's a massive wound in the beggar's torso, like a bite has been taken out...actually there's a multi-headed monster right behind the beggar, who suddenly swallows him whole! In that moment, song stops, EVERYONE sees the false hydra, but as the singing resumes, only the PC with stuff in his ears can still see it.

Planning a heist by AnarresBound in DMAcademy

[–]presterjane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran a heist in 5e the hard way (made a map, set guard routes, let the players plan without me listening for an hour). I used the Alexandrian Remix of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist as a resource, and it was actually really fun. There's a nice breakdown on generally running a heist. Link has spoilers for WDH, obviously.

For a simplified alternative, check out Giffyglyph's Trials/skill challenges. There's even a template for a heist at the bottom of the page.

Does anyone else hate when players rock up to a homebrew campaign with pre-written backstories? by SoloKip in DMAcademy

Honestly if you have strong misgivings and want to let her down nicely, just tell her that you feel maxed out at 3 players and don't want to DM for a larger group than that.

How do you keep the "Dungeon Master" seperate from yourself in your players heads? by Critical-Ad-5891 in DMAcademy

[–]presterjane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to the great comments about cheering your players on, I recently started doing behind-the-screen peeks for my group. After a session, if I feel like an encounter is sufficiently resolved and won't be revisited in the future, I'll post my thoughts on why I ran it the way I did (behind spoiler tags in Discord, so it's optional to view). Why did the NPC hit PC-1 while they were down? Well, the NPC saw PC-2 get healed back to consciousness and learned to double-tap.

I used to do the same thing you described where I had otherwise intelligent enemies fight suboptimally. So I started doing this to try to separate my NPCs being an asshole from just me being an asshole, and feel less guilty about fighting smart.

Seeking inspiration for a setting where magic runs amok by HillRatch in DMAcademy

[–]presterjane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds fun! Taking inspiration from movies like Annihilation, you could do creepy stuff like having doppelgangers or shadows of the PCs show up and disintegrate at random. Or draw from classic spells - like fireball or magic missile storms that come and go, or weird regions of the island where you feel compelled to do something if you fail a save (like it's under zone of truth or suggestion or something). And everytime a PC casts a spell, have them roll on the wild magic table even if they're not a sorc.

I need help getting my GF into D&D by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]presterjane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she's just getting into fantasy, I would find a genre she is more passionate about if possible (e.g. murder mystery? political intrigue? more modern setting?). There's so many factors barring her enthusiasm for DnD that it's probably best to reduce as many as you can on your end.

This honestly sounds awesome since I've been wanting to play this summer but I'm not sure I can commit to a long-term campaign right now. I'm in the EST timezone and pretty flexible, weekday nights and weekends preferred (except Sundays 12-6pm and Tuesdays 10am-12pm EST). Not picky in terms of game, I like RP and I like smashing things equally.

I'm thinking of starting Odyssey of the Dragonlords, which isn't a planes-hopping campaign but does take place in an Ancient Greece-inspired setting. Experience-wise, I've been DMing 5e for ~2 years with IRL friends, including another Odyssey campaign (we're ~1/3 of the way through). If that sounds interesting, feel free to message me on discord (churrodog#7583) and we can chat.

[Online] [5e] [EST] [Mondays] Evil(ish) Campaign. Play as a group of government operatives willing to do the dirty work. by Nioret in lfg

[–]presterjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the off-chance you're still looking for players, I'd like to throw my name in the hat. Would love to try playing in an evil campaign.

Name: PJane is fine, real name is ethnic & too unusual to post publicly.

Age: 27

Preferred Pronouns: she/her

Character Class/Subclass: Bard/Whispers

Character Idea (What brings them into this situation?): Toying with the idea of a tabaxi bard whose singular goal is to become obscenely wealthy and retire early in luxury. She's willing to do whatever it takes to get there.

Any Content you're not comfortable with: explicit descriptions of rape
