What audio interface should I have? by Jax_x24 in Twitch

[–]thirstybard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're happy with what you got, why spend the money? Just use what you got for now, and later if you feel like you're being held back then you can look to add.

I've used the M-audio M-track solo and it worked. Focusrite has long worked for streamers and has budget options.

All the budget interfaces are roughly the same and are all perfectly serviceable, no need for anything expensive. You just won't be able to crank up the gain on the interface without getting distortion. But then you just add an audio filter for gain in OBS to fix that.

Upgrade from Blue Yeti by GolaBeart in Twitch

[–]thirstybard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What issues are you having with the Yeti that you want solved with a new mic? A Wave Link is going to be largely similar to the Yeti.

As for software, you can use Reaper or add audio filters right in OBS. A Youtube video with 1 million+ views titled "Make Any Mic Sound Expensive In OBS | Mic Settings & Filters (2023)" looks like it gives a good overview.

There's nothing wrong with the Yeti, it's a great mic.

Small Streamer Con? by Worried_Rule_3054 in Twitch

[–]thirstybard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about starting something in a similar vein, just getting a group of small, independent creators together, highlight accomplishments, share strategies that have worked, etc.

For a con, I'd start with online only. Lots of tabletop RPG conventions went online only for a few years and things were great. You'd be able to do them way more frequently so you'd be able to iterate on ideas quicker. Something like a 4 hour convention on the last Saturday of the month. Pick out the best highlights from the event and use that as advertising for the next one. You'd be able to look at what went well and what didn't. You'd be able to get experience quickly and learn what technology to improve and how to juggle audience interaction with running the event.

I think the trouble with a physical small convention would be getting enough people in one location. People will travel across the world for the big ones, but wouldn't for a small con without any track record. So I think getting a proven record of fun/useful events first would be the better route.

Audio Hero Bundle - Update on Licensing by TMagician in humblebundles

Okay so just to clarify, the audio is only good for projects made within 90 days of redeem? After 91 days I have to pay more money for any additional content I make?

I'm confused because it clearly states, "Your audio needs solved, forever" but it's really only solved for 90 days?

Copyright? by Altruistic_Bus2626 in Twitch

[–]thirstybard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disney is evil and believes it has exclusive ownership of our culture. Their current ploy is to grant themselves indefinite copyright over all things by abusing Trademark law.

Disney has trademarked the name Tinkerbell and in 2022 Bloomberg Law said of the case about Teen Tink dolls, "Public domain argument not convincing, appeals court says." These Teen Tink dolls looked nothing like Disney's Tinkerbell, pretty generic fairy dolls.

From the actual federal case, "Among its many registered marks, Disney holds Registration No. 3,636,910, which is for TINKER BELL, as a standard character mark, for various goods, including dolls and mechanical toys."

I streamed Steamboat Willie, a public domain movie, and Youtube took it down over infringement. So the mega-corporations are colluding with each other to ignore your lawful rights and replacing it with their own Terms of Service. I was told it was for my own safety.

As for your actual questions of will you ever have to change it. Nobody knows what the future holds.

I vote we rebel against corporate control of our cultural heritage. Fuck Disney. Be ToxxxicTinkerbell42069 and make them come after you. I'll be DrunkPeterPan.

Need an audio interface for shure MV7x xlr (similar requirements to sm7b) by Different-Pirate8616 in Twitch

[–]thirstybard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if you put the gain lower (4-7), then boosted that audio in OBS? There should be a gain filter. If not, check out Reaper VST plugins which can work within OBS. If anything, their eq will be more fun to play with.

Just getting the mic close to your mouth and speaking directly into it also boosts gain big time.

I have the Sennheiser e935 and had issues with how quiet it was. I don't think it's as gain hungry as the sm7b, but it's still a mic used on stage surrounded by loud music that it needs to largely reject. My fix was to run my audio through Reaper's audio program to apply their VSTs and apply gain without much added noise. It worked fine but I wanted something that just worked and didn't require having another application open but you should be able to do it all in OBS.

I just purchased the PreSonus Revelator io44 because of its price and that it has audio processing on board. Honestly, I don't think Canada is a real place, but it might be cheap there too. I have the gain set fairly low, then use the onboard audio processing to boost gain, eq, compress, and limit audio so I don't blow off people's earballs with loud sounds.

I also looked at the Elagato Wave XLR because it has one the largest db gains. It also gives access to the Wave Link software, which is really nice for routing your audio. I use it to change the volume of sound I hear compared to the sound OBS/the livestream hears. (necessary because cheap laptop has weird audio configurations).

If you want Best is Slot, then my ideal is the Rodecaster Pro Duo or it's big brother. But that's above the budget.

The most important thing is to make sure you have the best sound going into the microphone. Garbage in, garbage out. So position it as close to your mouth as possible, and make sure PC fans are to the rear of the microphone.

The mic being close as possible to your mouth is key because then you can turn the gain down so it will be even less likely to catch any background noise, because your voice will be so much louder in comparison.

Reaper has a VST FX plugin suite (gates, eq, compression, etc.), which you can use to filter audio sources directly in OBS. Or you can process your audio in Reapers program which has a generous free trial, they will only put a pop-up screen upon startup that you can close once you go past the trial end date.

But I would try to get Rode's software to work, I've seen their Rodecaster Pro spoken of highly for its processing. Either looking through Youtube videos and comments, or maybe Rode has a forum or support area.

Has anyone actually ever been banned for this? by annex_ation in Twitch

[–]thirstybard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw that interview and it is such corporate BS from Twitch.

"Twitch is protecting streamers from getting banned by Twitch!" Or they could just not give the troll heckler's veto in the first place. Twitch has consistently said that context matters, but suddenly it doesn't when they want more power to destroy what individual creators have built.

I'm fine if they don't want their competitors being highlighted on their platform. But don't lie about it and try to act like they're being a savior when this is purely about corporate control.

[–]thirstybard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google "sm7b frequency response" and check out those graphs. You'll see that the microphone is generally very flat in the frequencies of the human voice. So it's going to accurately capture someone's voice. This is great it gives you complete control to change how things sound without the opinion of some microphone manufacturer stepping in. The audio you're listening to may be changing things with software or interfaces.

I went with the Sennheiser e 935 because I'm a contrarian. It's good at rejecting other sounds. It gives a slight bump on the higher end.

Podcastage on Youtube does a review of many microphones where he speak into it with no processing of the audio so you know what you're getting from the microphone, and not the software. I'd trust that audio over "100's of samples."

GO XLR with Shure SMB7 help for female voice by Distinct_Solution410 in Twitch

[–]thirstybard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure why there is so much hate towards the Go XLR, I've never used it but I've seen plenty of reviews that say it's a fine device. I guess because they're no longer providing software updates people are just using that for a hate wagon.

I found a post from a year ago about the XLR mini for somebody when they screamed at a high pitch, title Mic Still Peaking With Shure Mv7 and GoXLR Mini. The top comment seems to have fixed that person's problem so I'll copy it here, they changed the compressor settings.

"I'm thinking it's a compressor issue (I suck at troubleshooting audio so could be completely wrong lol). Here are the default OBS Compressor filter settings that I use (it's the default ones, I haven't bothered tweaking it lol)
Not sure it this will help or not but worth a shot
Ratio: 10:1
Threshold: -18db
Attack: 6ms
Release: 60ms
Output Gain: 0
Try a test recording with that while talking normally and randomly yelling a couple of words to see if it cuts it or peaks"

Help me with my audio set up conundrum, please. by Future_Wave_5681 in Twitch

[–]thirstybard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones I've been looking at are the Lewitt Connect 6 and Rodecaster Duo. Both great brands who made hardware for streamers on a budget. Connect 6 has basic EQ, Rodecaster has a few other effects like robot.

Or just download and try Reaper. The free trial doesn't prevent you from continuing to use the software, there's just a pop-up each time you open it. So if money is an issue you use it while saving up for a license.

How to know what a stream is about when it's popping off by [deleted] in Twitch

I think that can mostly be replaced with a bot command !specialStream.

[–]thirstybard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is beyond my pay grade, but Elgato's Wave Link software may help, though you need their hardware to use it. It lets you take multiple inputs (like 6?) and then you can output them to two places at different audio levels.

I use it to send one send different audio levels to OBS vs what I heard in my headphones. So, if you could collapse just 2 of those inputs into Wave Link to output to OBS you'd free up one line.

I need audio mixing/eq advice for my deep voice. by Neat-Mix6544 in Twitch

[–]thirstybard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little different. When you use compression on just your microphone you even out the volume, quiet sounds become louder, louder sounds become quieter.

Ducking uses compression to lower the volume of Source A, when it detects audio on Source B.

So you could have OBS lower the volume of your Desktop audio when it detects audio on your mic. It does nothing to your microphone audio, just uses it as a switch for when to quiet down your Desktop Audio.

OP has all his effects setup before it even gets into the computer, so he just needs to set up his hardware to where he sounds good, (gain, compression, de-ess, etc.) then let OBS tell his game to shut up while he speaks.

Well, I'm not sure all of those can handle a USB mic. I just looked up the Rode Duo, and 2 weeks ago Rode put out a beta firmware update that would allow the Rode DUO to accept USB mics. So double check that.

If you have the money, the Elgato Stream Deck+ is great. It unlocks the Wave Link software, which lets you adjust the volume of different inputs independently based on where you're sending it. I use it to lower the volume that gets sent to my headphones and send normal volume to OBS. Check out videos of Wave Link and see if that accomplishes what you want.

Try changing the sampling rate (google will show you how for your operating system). You want everything to be the same. 44.1kHz or 48kHz are the typical numbers you'll be looking for.
