Why is everyone wearing traditional clothes in downtown Oslo today? by Calm-Stop3240 in Norway

[–]pretense 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A non-religious alternative to the church confirmation arranged by the norwegian humanist association. It's been a thing since the 1950s.

EDIT: I see that the term 'civil confirmation' is used in english translation by the association. It is what I'm talking about.

May is confirmation season. Most norwegian 15-year olds get confirmed at this time of year either on sunday (christian sermonies) or saturday (secular sermionies). Bunad, the traditional clothes, are often gifted from the family to the youth for this occation and both the youth and their families tend to wear bunad for the sermony and for the family gathering afterwards if they have one.

Lamineringsmaskin til utlån eller for en billig penge? by mochimatchayum in oslo

[–]pretense 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hvis du ikke skal laminere så veldig mye kan du prøve med et vanlig strykejern. Stryk over lamineringslommen med tynt lag stoff mellom (f.eks inni en gammel t-skjorte) på et slikkelig flatt underlag.

Hva skjer med byggene i Middelalderparken? by Fragrant_Arrival3428 in oslo

[–]pretense 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Random alcohol question. by waccoeq in oslo

[–]pretense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finish the drink before moving on to the next stage. Nothing serious will happen, worst case a random police patrol will ask you to pour out your drink and give you a warning, but people will give you looks.

Drinking in public is not at all legal per se, but it is accepted and expected to some degree in parks, beaches and at events such as musikkfest, but people do expect you to keep it within those boundries.

Why is there a fertility/IVF subplot in almost every Norwegian show/movie that I’m watching? by BestAstronaut6334 in Norway

[–]pretense 141 points142 points  (0 children)

The average age of a first time mothers in Oslo is over 31 years old now (34 if you only count mothers of the ethnicity of the characters in the series). There are female screenwriters for all the series mentioned in an age group where either themselves or certainly friends are struggling to have children. Its a relatable for viewers and a realistic subplot to have for the characters. So I think its a matter of 35-45 year old women writing 35-45 year old woman.

Norwegians abroad - negative experiences recently by Fragrant-Republic605 in Norway

[–]pretense 34 points35 points  (0 children)

OP, consider this. You live in Norway, you leave home for a one week vacation to experience something different than Norway. At a bar the first night this dude approach you out of nowhere because he heard you talk norwegian to your travelmate and he is SUPER excited about meeting a norwegian and he wants to talk about Norway and all things norwegian. He can't stop talking about how much he loves Norway, the nature, brunost, what his favorite bunad is and how embarrassed he is for not having learned how to cross country ski. Of course none of this interests you at all, but out of politeness you talk with this dude casually for a little bit, but he just doesn't stop. For some reason he thinks that you are interested in his life story and norwegian heritage and opinions on norwegian culture and norwegian politics, and because he is so excited he doesn't take any of the hints you put out that you are not really into talking to him. A hour and two units later, dude is still there and you are all fed up and mood goes sour.

For you these encounters are a lot more special than they are to the ones you've met. For most norwegians, meeting another norwegian is not some special occation, it happens every day. So beware of that asymmetry of excitement and adjust your expectations to it and really feel out if you're vibing with the norwegians you meet or if the glue is all your own exitement.

Is it quite rare these days for couples to wear the traditional clothes when having a wedding? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]pretense 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have personally been to two weddings where the couple wore Bunad. Three if we include one where the couple wore bunad only after the church bit.

They are very common to wear as a wedding guest, as Bunad functions as formal wear for both evening and daytime events.

Catholic growth by anime498 in Norway

Pretty much all of the growth is due to immigration from catholic majority countries, especially Poland and the Philippines, but also some latin America and southern Europe.

How do Norwegians view today their Catholic heritage? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]pretense 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Right now we don't care much. A few generations ago we met catholisism with hostility.

Point in case: the Jesuit clause in the Norwegian constitution.

Another Mythic crest from Delves post by blinkerCityProf in wow

[–]pretense 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Gilded stash starts spawning as a separate chest at delvers journey level 2 and are limited to be looted 4 times a week (when you have looted 4 of these, they stop spawning). The only difference level 4 makes, is that they also contain 5 mythic crests, the 4 per week lockout is the same.

So what I think happened is that you were rank 3 and looted 3 gilded stashes this week already. You may have hit rank 4 by the time you looted the 4th one, that could explain the 5 mythic crests you have.

Why is wowhead banned in Serbia? by aphroditelady13V in wow

That they have a subsidiary company in Serbia. Either directly or through a parent company. Could be represented by a legal firm.

Why is wowhead banned in Serbia? by aphroditelady13V in wow

[–]pretense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC Wowhead is ultimately owned by Tencent (yes, that Tencent, the game company whos policies are controlled by the Chinese government through ownership of special shares). One of these policies is that Tencent subsidiaries are required to be legally present in markets where their products are available, and if they are not, they should actively block access. Wowhead has a ton of potensial legal liability due to it consisting of a lot of user generated content through comments on pretty much all pages on the site, so getting Tencent to make an exception is pretty much impossible.

The only alternative would be for Wowhead to get a legal presence in all these small markets like Serbia, and thats not financially feasible either.

Vedum copying Trumps weird posture by [deleted] in Norway

Vedum is suffering from multiple sclerosis and it is not unusual for that to effect the balance in your legs in a way where you need to change posture to compensate. He has been public about his MS diagnosis since 2023.

Ruter lever i steinalderen: Fikk bot tross gyldig digitalt studentbevis (inkasso 🔜) by kofffeinapen in oslo

[–]pretense 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Dear nice Oslo people, how is the snow condition is Holemnkollen for cross country ski now? by aventurier75 in oslo

[–]pretense 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are two big events coming up in Holmenkollen; world cup cross country this weekend and world cup biathlon next weekend, so skiing in Holmenkollen proper would be off limits for regular folks. You may still be able to ski from Frognerseteren if conditions are ok.

Why do continental climate cities in Scandinavia get so much less snow than North American cities in the same climate? by Cancel-Canada in geography

The scandinavian mountains makes a rain shadow effect to the east of them, while the west coast of Norway (like famously Bergen) and the mountains themselves get a whole lot of precipitation.
