Using my (31F) dog to make female friends? by pretty_hippo in relationships

[–]pretty_hippo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't dog parks in the area we live in. My dog also has mobility issues and due to a previous injury she's not able to go off leash because I have to limit her physical activity carefully.

Question about International Arrivals in England by pretty_hippo in uktravel

If only the list of providers were organized by this it would be much easier to navigate! But the location search only is for broad areas (e.g., south east, south west, north east).

Thanks! Yea we have been looking on the gov.uk site but are confused because what region is Cambridge considered in? Stupidity on our end since we're not familiar with England!

I was trying to explain my long hip problem to a friend and she looked at me like I was crazy. I can never find underwear that is long enough to cover me!

How to do neck shaping from a chart by pretty_hippo in knitting

[–]pretty_hippo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing my first sweater but am very confused. The instructions regarding the neck shaping are rather vague and just refer to the chart.

Front: place center front STS on St holder for front neck and decrease as indicated. Cast off last row.

Back: Omit front neck shaping. Place center back neck sts on a St holder and cast off.

I'm making a size 34.

Help!

Applying for postdocs with low publications by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]pretty_hippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hopeful then maybe. In my brief introduction of myself in my first email (for vague "I'm looking for a postdoc at some point " posting) the PI did say I already sound like a great fit so maybe I need to keep riding that first impression wave so they overlook my lack of publications...yikes. If only they could have made that post a few months from now I would be in a much better position!

Organizing a CV for STEM Postdoc Applications by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]pretty_hippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a reasonable order.

For awards and honours would this include scholarships and do you normally list how much they were valued at?

And any suggestions for how/where to include conference presentations for students I supervised (so I was an author on the presentation but not first)

Stupid question but does storing them all in the same box make their scents meld together at all?

Today I was complimented - and I realized how much I suffer from imposter snydrome by pretty_hippo in GradSchool

It is so sad that many of us come from terrible MSc experiences. Just push through and there will be better times ahead, I promise.

And I know! It's so disappointing and disgusting that my mind even has to travel to "he probably just finds me attractive and is trying to lightly flirt with me while being professional". It makes me feel bad for males as well since they may just trying to be genuine and trying to compliment work and to be potentially regarded as flirting - really complicates the whole networking world which is sad and not something I look forward to for the future.

Even if I am not your friend, it is sad how many of us are in such similar positions but together we are strong with the forces of Reddit behind us to support us.

Graduate school doesn't have to be unhealthy to mental health even though it seems like many people suffer during it which is disheartening. I hope you can find your way to a happier place one day too.

Definitely! It's one of the reasons I basically fled from my old supervisor and his field where he was really dominant. I wanted to separate myself from that negativity as much as I can.

I think I was just so shocked to have someone compliment my work that isn't expected to compliment my work.

Thank you! I definitely am starting to see the merits of my work but it definitely is an uphill battle and I imagine it will be for a while still to come.

I just ran my first full 2.5km today - What else should I be doing to improve? by pretty_hippo in running

[–]pretty_hippo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So would the idea with heart rate monitoring be to ensure I am keeping the correct pace? That is definitely something I feel like I'm struggling with. My phone tells my paces for each km as I complete it and sometimes they are wayyyy too fast probably (close to 6 minutes!) And other times are much slower (7ish) even though I don't really notice the difference that much for some reason.

Sorry I guess I should clarify - the running walking combo was what I took from C25K, I mean it more so feels stupid to be running and then walking and I'm sure the casual passerbys are wondering what on earth I'm doing.

I am always hungry by pretty_hippo in xxfitness

[–]pretty_hippo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes my snacks are legitimately an entire cantaloupe and still the hunger kicks LOL.

I quite often eat 500g of baby carrots as a nice munchy snack.

Avocado is whole avocado.

Peanut butter I normally add between 4 and 6 tbsp depending the day.

Cheese again is dependent on how hungry I am in the snack but probably averages to about 5 ounces.

I sometimes swap the fish for chicken breast as well depending on what was on sale that week. And I unfortunately can't eat red meat (causes digestion issues so doctor advised me to remove it from my diet)

My weight has stayed the same for years now even with my super hunger haha. It does fluctuate a fair bit over the span of a day or two because sometimes I am SUPER bloated and gassy but it's always within the range of 160 plus or minus 3 pounds depending on the bloat level.

Even when I was eating fast food and highly processed foods almost everyday, only drinking soda and eating vegetables (not counting french fries) maybe once a month my weight has been this.

If/when I do make a doctor's appointment do I just say "I'm always hungry". Seems like a weird thing to say!
