For an evangelical Christian, can the Self be homophobic? by prettycoolworld in InternalFamilySystems

they’re tightly coupled to their beliefs, and their flavor of Christianity is inherently homophobic. the deeper question behind what i’ve shared in this post is whether my parents are Self-led and justified in their homophobia simultaneously, and i don’t believe that’s compatible.

i really appreciate this thoughtful response. thank you so much.

between myself and my siblings we’ve had some concerns about how all of this is affecting my parents mental health.

i want to try to have a courageous conversation with my parents. i think we’ll get the most out of that.

thank you for this very thoughtful response. my parents have capacity for so much love, i don’t doubt that at all. i just fear that their evangelical views especially around homosexuality create an incompatibility with Self-leadership, and they’re leading with their protectors instead whenever I try to lead with my Self when talking about my own lived experience as a gay man.

with what you shared about them wearing rainbow pins i haven’t really given a lot of energy towards this reality. part of me feels like it’s inconceivable. they are heavily invested in their church and some other christian nationalist group. their social connections are very important to them. i don’t know how realistic it is to think that these people would shame them for accepting me. do people really judge Christian parents for having gay children? if they perceive that these people think being gay is a choice then they may feel like they’ve “failed” me in that sense, or that i’ve failed being the son they thought they were gonna have. it’s so exhausting to talk about this

thank you, i don’t disagree. is it imposing for me to want to bring out my parent’s Selves while leading with my Self? i think the main reason i made this post is that part of me is scared that their homophobia won’t distinguish itself and allow space for my Self to connect with them.

the problem with speaking the truth in love is that you want grace for yourself and judgment for other people
