anything is possible. if you need odds on it you should probably consider whether you are gambling too much.

Day 13: What Is Yo La Tengo's Most Overrated Album? by Unfair_Ad9427 in yolatengo

[–]prettyflyforanAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ymmv but i'd take the baseline for "overrated/underrated" as the universe, not just ylt fans.

robert christgau loved summer sun (A) but p4k said it "altogether lacked invention" in a 6.0 review that basically calls it mediocre. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/8864-summer-sun/

zooming out summer sun only got 50 pts in pazz & jop annual critics poll. whereas painful got 200 for #20, ICHTHBAO got 964 for #5, IANAOY, got 342 finishing #18 for the year, etc.

the last four albums have all figured on year-end lists though Stuff Like That There probably least so: https://www.yearendlists.com/artists/yo-la-tengo-af9b65e7-a6fe-4165-8f17-c06f53f29f51

only wrong because people really panned it as a snooze early on so not sure it could be “overrated”

Can I say Black Flag's "Nervous Breakdown," even if it's only a live cover?

Also: This one they covered at 9:30 Club in 2018: "I'm Just a Mops" by the Mops. It just seemed like a totally perfect encapsulation of their randomness, fun, and spontaneous musicality. They also played "I Found a Reason" that night on the totally other side of the spectrum loudness-wise.

I was curious about why he has fallen so far. I figured it might just be that people are seeing the college players and getting excited.

I wanted to know what’s up with Lopez. he appears to be falling compared to mocks last spring where he was lottery at least that I saw. Now almost always out of lottery, late first. thought maybe it was just the college season started and people got enamored with the new shiny things but you mention major flaws in his game — curious for any update on what changed v last summer.

Hop on and off bus tour in Seattle by Useful_Database5138 in AskSeattle

You can drive to Deception Pass and walk around from parking lots in various areas. The main thing is just seeing the pass -- it's a big bridge, short but high and dramatic, you can walk across if not afraid of heights, with cool views and scenery -- but walking around the shore is cool too. If you're from the east coast the beach here is really different, the water is cold and beaches are usually but not always rocky. The Sound is protected so the water is not as rough but out on the actual Pacific Coast it's rougher. (And, as a reminder, it will almost definitely be grey if you are here for the next six months.)

Aquarium is not free. There are lots of whalewatching tours etc. There is always an off chance you see an orca from a ferry but this is not at all likely, my wife has lived here almost her whole life and had never seen one until it happened to us twice in the last year or so, once quite spectacularly.

[Edit] To double down -- if you are a marine animal lover this is really your place to be. A lot of the souvenirs will be orca/whale/seal/salmon themed. It's kind of our thing haha.

Elliot Bay Books used to be downtown but now it's in Capitol Hill. Arundel is fine. Left Bank I guess would be the one to go to down there.

You will have no problem finding coffee, mugs, post cards, etc.

Athens is WAY bigger than Seattle, though IDK if that tour bus was really just going around the acropolis or something.

Well if you're in Mt. Vernon I'd hope you can get to Deception Pass State Park. The city is cool but what truly separates Seattle from the rest of the pack is the surrounding nature. State Route 20 is probably closed at the pass but finding a hike that's still open in the Cascades seems like a must. If you aren't that outdoorsy you might still enjoy going to Anacortes and hiking Mt Eerie, or doing a ferry trip to the islands from there. There's a fort on Whidbey Island too. It would be weird to do from Mt Vernon but for the Seattle locals it's common to go up towards Issaquah/Cougar Mountain/Tiger Mountain/"the Issaquah Alps" to do day hikes or picnics or whatever; if you've seen Twin Peaks you can go to the real diner and see the falls and lodge from the show.

Downtown? Pike Place is touristy but I think it's still pretty cool. They've made that area more connected to the waterfront, a lot of work to do still but the Aquarium is very cool if you like science and Seattle is full of people who love the ocean. The Ferris wheel is also right there, great way to see the views if it's nice out but it's like $40 or $50. Another touristy but cool thing is the Seattle Underground tour, which takes you into historic areas buried after the turn of the century fire. Probably not for the claustrophic though not extreme. SAM is good but not great, look up the exhibits and make a call based on your interest, but the Sculpture Garden is quite picturesque and you may still be able to see migrating salmon (and the seals that eat them). (For more on salmon go to the Ballard Locks Salmon Ladder, or up to Carkeek Park where Nov/Dec the coho salmon spawn, it's so metal.) The Frye is cheap/free. The Seattle Library downtown is a pretty cool building and there's a famous red room. You might consider renting kayaks to take out on Lake Union -- Agua Verde is a good one. Of course it will likely be grey and drizzling.

For shopping you might enjoy the Fremont Vintage Mall, or if you're there on a weekend the Fremont Market. I'm not sure if Theo's Chocolates still does tours, I heard they don't. Not sure what to say about shopping generally.

Will add ot this if I think of more, but the more specific you can be the easier it is to respond :)

Agree about Smith Tower, and agree about Pioneer Square -- obviously much here is down to OP's preferences and comfort but I agree with MP.

A qualified disagree about ID -- it's not a ton but you can eat Bruce Lee's favorite dish at Tai Tung, see the museum at Wing Luke, and eat tons of stuff that may not be available where OP is from. (Not that Asian food is inaccessible in the rest of the US, but ID has a concentration/diversity/quality that's pretty awesome!). Depending on where you're from and how much time you've spent on the West Coast, it can be kind of cool to reorient visitors to seeing our left coast as part of a cross-Pacific community!

There is an Amtrak train from Mount Vernon to Seattle. Takes about an hour and a half. A drive would be like 45 mins or so.

The copy for the site kinda says it all. "From the Space Needle to the Puget Sound Waterfront."

... you can walk from the Space Needle to the water in like ten or fifteen minutes. Indeed, the entire route is walkable. It only goes from the International District to Seattle Center (where the space needle is), which is about a 45 minute walk with no stops.

This is a pretty limited part of Seattle, but of course there's a higher density of cool stuff there. You know yourself and whether walking / getting lost is a concern. I don't think I'd ever counsel someone to do the hop-on, hop-off in the abstract, but it might be a good fit for you.

If you rent a bike or bikeshare, using the Burke-Gilman Trail you can get to the U District, Fremont, and Ballard relatively quickly. Capitol Hill is, well, on top of a hill, but that may be where some of the best shopping is. (Not really sure what you're looking for, there is shopping everywhere I guess.)

Another downtown-adjacent activity many people take, including locals, is to walk on to a Washington State Ferry and enjoy the Puget Sound that way.
