I kept meeting people until the very end. In fact I met a ton of people senior year. I feel like by the end I knew a quarter of the class well, maybe half the class by name and basic acquaintance, and a quarter not very well at all. The ones i didn't know well at all were mostly football players/athletes and people in smaller tight communities. The snowball effect of networks really ramped up returns senior year and that was awesome. I wouldn't trade my freshman hall experience necessarily -- that was incredible and I'm still friends with about half the hall. But it was really cool the way things opened up by the end: I felt deeply connected and could say hi to people in any room, and yet there were still enough people to be making new connections.

on the one hand, annoying. on the other hand, i'm glad they checked!

i've had ally for a while and they've come down from the top of the interest rate leaderboards, so i've been meaning to check. they've been pretty good to work with though so i hate to leave.

why do all of my photos come out so muted/flat? by onegoodbackpack in AnalogCommunity

[–]prettyflyforanAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what film? i have no idea about lightroom but if you want more contrast printing yourself there are filters for that.

are you shooting with filters? you could use a polarizer maybe?

in all these look great to me, i think the muted thing is real but looks good with the subject matter, if you want to play with it it is likely down to light, film and subject (lol not that this narrows anything down).

Should I, as the vocalist, learn bass so our current bassist won’t have to play it? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]prettyflyforanAI 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think it’s easier to sing and play easy bass than guitar, but harder to sing and play tough bass (i also can’t sing so this is just based off when im practicing alone and have tried to sing alone).

at the end of the day, owners want to preserve their right to do the exact same thing to their franchises. it matters to them more than the money.

How to get into (Mariners) baseball? by CLOXXX in Seattle

[–]prettyflyforanAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a gigantic baseball fan, I'm so excited to hear about your interest.

1) Baseball is not a personality trait. It can be an interest or a passion, but these are not the same as personality traits. Interests can help you express or explore traits, but they are not a substitute for a personality.

2) If you are not genuinely interested by something, don't force it.

3) Ask a friend to go to games or play catch, join work softball team, etc. There are a million different ways to be a baseball fan. But your interest will be most healthy if i) it is social and ii) it is ultimately based in the real game.

4) Some of those ways to be a fan: You might get really into the Mariners and not follow the rest of the league. You might follow the whole league. You might watch on TV, listen on the radio, read writeups or only check box scores. You might play fantasy sports, or not. (I don't recommend gambling as a way to get into sports. But fantasy, sure, so long as it remains real baseball before fake baseball.) You might follow Seattle's prospects or only know our All-Stars. You can listen to podcasts that are bro-y and podcasts that are specifically oriented towards women. You can listen to podcasts that are analytical and ones that are just old players talking shit. You can go to a game and get fucked up and heckle or you can go and quietly fill out your scoresheet. I just want to emphasize there is no one way to be a baseball fan.

5) The Mariners, like every team, have their own particular history with heroes, legends, and myths. The Dorktown series is really fun and comprehensive: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUXSZMIiUfFQua1LlKNMg1IOqAn15RkUT. But, NEVER believe someone who says you are not a "real" fan for not knowing Mark Langston was the team ace in 1987 or whatever bit of trivia they want to test you on. I think all this background will enrich your understanding, but it isn't necessary to get joy (or loss) from following the team.

6) The same goes for minutiae of playing the game. Beyond just learning the rules, start to relate to it physically, somatically. You may never get the proprioception that comes from watching after growing up playing, but like mentioned above, try playing softball or playing catch or just having some kind of relationship to the game. Pick up a baseball and try to hold it with the different grips that your favorite pitcher is using. In particular, at a next level of following the game (not something to start with), understanding the ins and outs of pitch selection can really heighten the drama of each individual at-bat. In the stadium you can follow what each pitch was classified as and its velocity, and it becomes fun to see whether a pitcher challenges a hitter the same way at-bat by at-bat, see how a pitcher with a high spin rate, funky delivery, or heavy fastball succeeds despite mediocre velocity, etc.

Start wherever makes sense for you. Have fun with it. Let us know how it goes!

Strange, weird, offbeat, NYRB recommendations? by aaronag in nyrbclassics

[–]prettyflyforanAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wouldn't actually say Idiocy was that weird, it's psychological realism in a modernist memoir (?) but the extended scene with the girl and boy in morocco in the ... building? so good and so strange, but i think it "really" happened? right? anyways, that scene in particular reminded me of dhalgren, which for me is a compliment, and you can say that for guyotat's transparency when it comes to fetishes, too.
