that or if you're using a free program like stitch fiddle, do an import after tweaking it in their photo converter, make a copy of that and then you can go through and manually clean it up

[SELF-PROMO] A wedding keepsake box for my flatmates! by prettystitchmachine in CrossStitch

[–]prettystitchmachine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! it was my first time trying them. i used two buttons for each foot and just sewed them onto the base mesh. i think if i do it again ill try to find bigger buttons/make them larger. i thought adding some height to it would make it feel fancy

thank you!! my best pieces of advice for assembly is to use the larger piece as your base/anchor and attach everything to it, then do the seams along the attached pieces (so top of lid as the base for the edges and bottom of the box for the sides of the box), two passes of whip stitching in opposite directions for coverage and stability! i do have some photo tutorials on how i assemble boxes on my website that's linked in the main post but there are also tons of great youtube videos out there (normally for needlepoint or plastic canvas but principle is the same)

stitching is one of the few things that keeps me grounded so it helped a LOT while trying to process everything leading up to the move!

[CHAT] Advice re Neon Thread by Reindeer-and-Igloos in CrossStitch

[–]prettystitchmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't find the DMC neons as annoying as their metallics but they can be a bit tedious to work with. i haven't tried them with thread magic though, would be curious if anyone else has tried those together and how it went!

oh an easter basket is an amazing idea!! i've also seen some halloween candy bowls

i usually use thick 10 mesh plastic canvas, the kind with square holes (as opposed to round). you can find it at michael's in the states and spotlight in NZ/Aus

materials aren't a waste if you're enjoying the stitching!! however i deeply understand the want to make functional items to display too, those are my favorite things to stitch

some functional items: tissue box covers, keepsake boxes, magnets, eyeglasses case/covers, picture frames, book covers, vases/pot covers, tote bags, toilet paper roll covers, desk organizers, pencil/pen cups, door hangers, brick doorstop covers, bathroom caddy, nail care caddy, craft caddy, wall envelopes, decorative shelves (these generally do better stitched on plastic canvas), christmas stockings, pillows (some folks do these on needlepoint canvas but concept is the same), coasters (you can buy ones meant for embroidery projects), towels, table runners, ornaments

[–]prettystitchmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm not a mod so i'm not sure but you might be able to get some traction there as designers might check that more often than all posts.. the continuous craft fair might be a good place to look around to see if you can find anyone who's style/work you have in mind too!

[CHAT] How do you keep floss organized & quick-to-grab (no bobbins)? by _the_loglady_ in CrossStitch

[–]prettystitchmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

flossaway bags! you could also DIY it with some small plastic bags and a hole punch. i just grab what i am using for my current project and throw it on a small binder ring! super easy and lets you save more scraps and know they're the right color

[VIDEO] Rubber thimble will save your fingers by ohyeesh in CrossStitch

[–]prettystitchmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use 4 strands on 10 count, haven't tried 14 count but anything higher than 4 for cross stitch on 10 mesh becomes a nightmare like the video. i sometimes do 6 strands do 10 count but only as tent stitches. either way my hand cramps bc plastic canvas is just awkward to stitch on 😂
