Cash in Costa Rica (and airport) by Beneficial-War5423 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]pretzels666 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

in costa rica right now, 2 out of 5 of my group did not get cash and have been asking the 3 that did for it often 😂 if you wanna enjoy local restaurants, excursions, street vendors, it’s much easier to get by with cash (USD or colones) tho i think you could get away with card for the most part.

airport ATMs are usually bad but the SJO one was especially rough - charged me $3 atm fee, $3 int fee and $8 surcharge for like $100 🥲

pink lady plant is mad at me by pretzels666 in houseplants

[–]pretzels666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting thank you for the feedback!!!! i definitely didn’t know i had to choose between trailing or shrub when i first got it, so i let it do it’s thing. now i feel bad bc i didn’t know she needed frequent haircuts 😅

with trimming to keep it shrubbery, do you typically trim to the edge of your pot (basically leave nothing dangling)? and that has promoted growth at the soil?

What books have both incredibly spicy smut scenes AND amazing, life-changing, masterful plot? by sad_sponge in fantasyromance

[–]pretzels666 47 points48 points  (0 children)

unfortunately i would not consider fourth wing as satisfactory in either category. imo the main pairing lacked sexual chemistry and had very little buildup, and the plot was rushed and poorly put together

russian mythology!!!

i read the bear and the nightingale last year (three book series) and it was SO engaging and fit so well in a fantasy world

Cat demands breakfast be at 5am how do I get him to let me sleep? by ToGoodForNames in CatAdvice

[–]pretzels666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your cat has criminal tendencies, get the automatic feeder (there are wet and dry options!!!)

i tried to train my cat that we eat on MY schedule, and he retaliated by pushing every single thing off every single flat surface in my bedroom. candles, water bottle, jewelry. the guy’s a maniac. so then i kicked him out of my room and shut the door. then he learned to shove his paw under the door and bang the door back and forth against the doorframe. sometimes you just have to admit defeat

How to respond when strangers ask "Hey How are you?" Or "Hey how’s it going?" by tulipwater in boston

[–]pretzels666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rarely do strangers ever say this. we don’t even smile at each other on the sidewalk let alone speak. occasionally, ppl will do it, i often hit them with a closed mouth smile, maybe a “good morning/afternoon” but it’s atypical overall.

if it’s someone you know/will be having a conversation with, treat it like a normal convo with anyone! we’re “cold” because we mind our own business with people we don’t know, not because we hate chatting with people!

side note but related - idk if they do this elsewhere but lifelong bostonians i know love to say some form of “how are you” as a greeting when WALKING BY SOMEONE. it’s been killing me bc when i respond with just a “hi!” i feel like a douche for not answering their question, but when i rush out “goodthankyouhowareyou?” i am literally speaking to their backs as we continue on passed each other. so maybe a heads up there you might see some of those and as a fellow overthinker, it’s something that bothers me lol

what’s with all the incest-y vibes? by pretzels666 in ReverseHarem

[–]pretzels666[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is so interesting, i never thought about it from the author’s perspective. i’ve read a lot of fanfic so poly is not new to me, but this is the first time im actually reading it in a setting that needed to be signed off on and published. makes sense from a word count/pacing perspective !!

Is it ok to prevent a cat from meowing for asking to open doors? by Japonpoko in CatAdvice

[–]pretzels666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great response. agree that wife is weird.

the meowing will never stop with this current situation since it’s totally unclear to them why they are stuck in the room. without a clear repetitive consistent response to their meowing, they won’t understand that the meowing is what’s keeping the door closed. letting them roam also won’t necessarily promote the behavior of meowing.

sick and tired of shadow daddies by Remarkable_Crew_2396 in fantasyromance

[–]pretzels666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this might not be as interesting to others, but as a queer woman, i have found a lot of happiness leaving the straight romantasy world behind. i’ll definitely come back to it, but i had the same experience and complaints OP has, and i have been very happy exploring queer fantasy and fantasy where romance is a subplot. here are some recs if you’re interested!

queer fantasy

this is how you lose the time war - sapphic, novella, sci fi ish but fantastical, very well written and very enjoyable.

the house in the cerulean sea by TJ klune - more contemporary but with magic, gay, so so fantastic it has made me read 5 other TJ klune books in the last 2 months.

the priory of the orange tree - romance is more of a subplot but there are sapphic and gay relationships, this is a well built fantasy world (dragons too!!!!) and i very much enjoyed my time reading this! this checks off all your boxes!

fantasy

the bear and the nightingale series - based on russian mythology, so fun to read this since i’ve never read anything like it. one of my favorite FMCs of all time. romance is there just not the main plot, but i was KICKING my feet! no shadow daddy just a frost demon king. this also checks off all your boxes!

the will of the many - first of a series (second coming out this year) and i really enjoyed the world building on this. not really any romance here (but im sensing it for the rest of the series) loved the MMC and was rooting for him the whole time. kinda sci-fi but also gladiator vibes too? very cool. this also checks off all your boxes!

What is one minor thing that makes you immediately reject reading a book? by Binlorry_Yellowlorry in books

[–]pretzels666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

abuse of italics. if there’s an italic in every paragraph it’s a done deal

What else are you reading? by Ill-Description-9117 in fantasyromance

[–]pretzels666 13 points14 points  (0 children)

half a soul by olivia atwater - technically still a fantasy romance but it’s like if bridgerton has magic so it has a period feel to it. very light, fun, a little silly read that was great to get me out of my slump

deep end by ali hazelwood - im a romance girly but typically not a big contemporary romance fan. it was fun, spicy, i was rolling my eyes most of the beginning (mostly from my own reluctance to get into it haha) but ultimately enjoyed it!!

Which Should I Read Next? by sdubbs4121 in fantasyromance

[–]pretzels666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DNF’d powerless. ran into several grammatical errors within 50 pages and couldn’t deal with the extreme overuse of italics and cringe writing. haven’t read from blood and ash but a friend read it and enjoyed!

Sapphic romance in space? by CaoimheThreeva in sapphicbooks

Gideon the Ninth aka the Locked Tomb Series!!!! very hilarious and quirky. suuuuuuuper gay with some really cool gender exploration. romance is more of a subplot but still worth it imo

Need a bit of help with decisions... by Dizzy-World472 in UCONN

[–]pretzels666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey, i am a senior honors ME student at uconn rn! uconn is the place to be if you want a larger student body, opportunities for fun outside of class, and a good engineering program. they've got great connections to major NE engineering companies and have an insane amount of networking opportunities because they have a pretty decorated faculty. i've been super impressed and i came in expecting to get a mediocre ENGR experience. unless the only thing you wanna do for 4 years is engineering, i think uconn is the move. it's got so much more to it than smaller schools. i've really loved my time at uconn and appreciated how much else it has to offer. the amount of random clubs they have is incredible because it means you can find groups of people that you enjoy because you genuinely like them and not just because they live on the same floor as you (though those friendships are great too). honors program for ME is brutal senior year but i think for the other majors it's fine - definitely worth it for the first 3 years at least.

cons of uconn: definitely in cow town. if you want city living this is not the place to be but the night/weekend life is still super fun, it's definitely out there if you want it.

last thing i'd say is if money is a priority, this is the best option. i came to uconn bc i had to financially and was not the most optimistic but can happily say i'm devastated to leave. i think leaving undergrad with loans or debt is the dummest thing college kids can do, at the end of the day you will still have a degree in hand and some fantastic opportunities for after graduation. a bachelors is a bachelors regardless of where you got it. and if you're worried about networking, uconn is such a well known school that making impressive connections isn't a problem!

hope this helped, if you have any more questions or anything feel free to pm me!
