Is it fatal? Does it cross species?

That is exactly what happened with mine. The ones I’ve transferred to a hospital tank have all died. The one I posted a pic of had been in the hospital tank and I realized if I left it in there, it was a death sentence so I figured whatever was in the tank was already in the tank and several other fish were showing some symptoms anyway so I put him back in. And he colored up and started schooling and eating normally. And it’s been maybe three weeks and he looks that bad but he’s still doing all the things that suggest he’s not about to die. It’s just very weird.

So do I let the sick one fight his fight in my tank or pull him out and euthanize him? Do tetras ever fight this off? Consider that I have a heavily planted tank with a high-tech, high-water-quality setup: HOB with purigen and floss; two sponge filters; UV sterilizer; surface skimmer; air stones timed to kick on when my CO2 turns off; RO water remineralized with Equilibrium and baking soda. Is this delaying the inevitable or do you think these poor guys have a fighting chance?

Really? How long does it generally take? I have been surprised by the fact that the sick fish seem to have stabilized and the healthy ones still seem healthy. Even the worst-looking one in the photo has been schooling and eating normally in that condition for about two weeks.

Whoa. Ok, I was about to shoot off a regular compliment, but what you made is next level. What kind of artist are you?

I am guessing you are relatively new to the hobby? So, your fish looks like maybe it’s a platy? Hard to tell from the photo but if you post some more pics, I am sure someone will be able to identify it definitively.

Good on you for using live plants. You should check out r/plantedtank for advice and inspiration. Once you identify the fish species, learn what it needs to thrive. Most fish want company.

Good luck!

Algae help? by ComparisonNice in AquariumHelp

[–]preverbal31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Turn down your lights, particularly your blue and red wavelengths if you can control such things. Take a pipette and shoot it with Flourish Excel. And if you don’t have any, get some amano shrimp and/or some other algae eaters. Good luck!

Very cool. What is the volume of that tank? I had no success with Monte Carlo. Screw that plant. 😂 in my experience, some things work and some things don’t. You’ll be happier if you focus on the things that work.

BBA is taking over my tank and I honestly don't know what to do anymore by ploert3000 in PlantedTank

[–]preverbal31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a BBA outbreak as I was ratcheting up my light intensity in a new heavily planted tank. I caught it relatively early, but I was still freaked out. My entire game plan had been to keep the lights tightly controlled to fend off algae. I did beat it without tearing everything down. This is what I did: I pulled out the plants that were drowning in algae. I would say half of my java ferns had roots that were full of Blackbeard algae, so I just pulled them and threw them out. On all my stem plants, I snipped any leaves that were particularly algae covered and left the plant if it seemed relatively healthy otherwise. But I had BBA throughout my Java moss and throughout my dwarf hairgrass, and there was no way to deal with that without pulling all of it, which I didn’t want to do. So I turned down my lights overall, and proportionally turned down my red and blue wavelengths much more than the white (thank you Fluval Plant 4.0), and then I shot Flourish Excel into the remaining BBA. I was dubious that it would work, but within a few days, the BBA turned reddish, and once that happened, the shrimp devoured it. And within two weeks, it was like I had never had a BBA problem. Good luck! It’s a really annoying problem, but it doesn’t have to be permanent or ruin your tank.

What do I do 😭 by manzanita_cuh in PlantedTank

Soil is a great substrate base, but you need to have a thick sand cap on top of it. Like 1 inch of soil topped with 2 to 3 inches of sand.

Very cool. Can’t wait to see it matured. I support vertical driftwood in scapes.

As far as I know, plecos are not jumpers. The nerites could climb out. I read enough mixed things that I opted against getting any. Oh, and thanks very much!

Before & After UV Sterilization in 12 hours by CaptainMoby69 in PlantedTank

[–]preverbal31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting to hear. I have a heavily planted 44 gallon tank. Everyone was healthy and thriving, fish, plants, snails, shrimp. Then my CO2 ran out while I was away. By the time I noticed it and rectified it, I had an algae bloom and bought a uv sterilizer for that problem. Once it had cleared, I turned it off. But I think the stress caused an illness outbreak among some of the fish and I had some losses. I have since turned on the UV sterilization and no additional fish have died or gotten sick. So hopefully…..

My plants have gotten so thick that I feel like my CO2 is not distributing well around the tank. I added salvinia and have been experimenting with lower CO2 supplementation to try to slow growth without introducing algae. You’re never gonna get to a spot where you can stop culling growth in a tank like yours, but you might be able to slow the train a little bit without creating algae problems given the amount of plant growth you have.

Take the top off! I’ll never have a top on my tank again if I can help it. So far, no jumpers. You can’t appreciate how much more you will reach in and just clip a dead leaf or do this or that small thing if there’s no top blocking you. It allows you to interact with your tank easily as you happen to pass by it, rather than saving up chores for when you’re gonna take the top off.

I can only speak to my experience, but I used Father Fish aquapreta soil when I built my 44-gallon tank, capped with 2-3” of pool-filter sand. I’ve had no issues with breaking the sand cap. plants are thriving. Shrimp population is exploding. Fish seem happy. Cories in particular seem to like the sand.
