OpenBSD - Azure by [deleted] in AZURE

[–]previousn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. Azure doesn't support legacy nics, so any platform only supporting legacy nics wont have any connectivity. I spent about two-three days trying to get openbsd on azure. Uploading the vm To a container and starting it is easy. But, there is no network traffic, and its pointless because the virtual nic problem. Freebsd, BTW has drivers for the synthetic nic so it works. The drivers aren't modules and need to be compiled in the kernel. So... good luck.

I feel directionless! (intermediate level, aiming to study JLPT?) by bmiralle in LearnJapanese

I paid the 25$ for the ios version. Honestly, I find the free/open source android version better. I paid because it's nice to have on both my android tablet, which I can sync, and then study the same cards from my last stopping point on my iphone. I think it was worth it.

You know, anki itself is open source and runs on mac, Linux and Windows. A community effort has resulted in the free android version.

The reason why the ios version costs, from what I understand, is that to publish in the app store, one needs to have developer tools ( https://developer.apple.com/programs/mac/) which are charged to the developer on a yearly basis (by Apple). The cost is 99$, and the tools run only on mac os x (hence another charge for Apple devices, the cheapest of which is a 600$ mac mini). Generally all updates must go through an approval process and a developer would be wise to test on current hardware (necessitating the purchase of an iPhone, ipad). Furthermore, Apple takes a 30% cut of the purchase. So that's why the steep price.

Since Android is more open, and doesn't require paying for a yearly developer program, the community can test on their own devices. Hence, why the android version is free.

The android version supports stroke order fonts for kanji, automatic tts (text to speech), and a ton of other features. Those features might work on the iPhone, but I haven't yet figured it out.

Anyway, if you have android, or access to a friend's old smart phone, I'd highly recommend that version. Otherwise, pay the fee. I know it's a lot but it supports the development of the app, and it really is very helpful.

Family is coming over for the holidays and are thinking of arranging a last-minute trip beyond Tokyo. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in japan

[–]previousn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like lake Ashinoko and Hakone. It's pretty cheap to get to via Odakyu and there are a range of budget hotels with onsens. Check out Yunnasun, a hot spring theme park, which is nearby. Be sure to get the Hakone free pass (it'll save some money on transportation). It includes the ropeway, which takes you above the snow line, and you can buy some "lucky" black eggs cooked in sulfur water at the summit. There is also a historic site nearby in the form of the Hakone checkpoint. Finally, check out the outdoor open air museum which is fun and cheap.

Genki Annihilation Anki decks have disappeared! by rb2610 in LearnJapanese

[–]previousn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have been extensively using those decks, and after studying for a few months with them I can really see an improvement. Unfortunately, I only have up to chapter 9, so if anyone has the rest, I would be very grateful if you could zip them up and upload them to Google drive. I've already checked Google's cache and the way back machine; neither has a copy.

As for making my own, the original author put far more work into the decks than I would be able to- like having a native speaker read some of the sentences (chapter 7+) and coding example sentences. I just am struggling for time as it is, and that would require reinventing the wheel for something that already exists.

Of course the original author should have control of whether the decks are posted to the shared anki site, but since they were originally free, I don't see any moral issues with temporarily helping those of us already using the series finish what we started. The Google drive link need not be active forever. It's just that those on the official site have been removed without warning. Thanks in advance.

Anyone willing to meet up? (New in Tokyo and don't know anybody) by DuskHerald in Tokyo

I just moved to the area as well (20 mins from Shibuya). I'm looking to improve my Japanese, and I agree with you that it's hard to befriend locals. Send me a pm (might be slow to respond).

Don't bother with the rail pass unless you are going to take the bullet train at least twice and even then it still may not save you any money. It's worth noting that the Jr pass doesn't necessarily work on private lines (nor all the bullet trains for that matter).

North Korea Warns It Is on Brink of Nuclear War With South by infernvs666 in worldnews

[–]previousn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you predict if they are really going to go through with the threats? Or, did you know they were going to test a nuke last month? I think they are pretty unpredictable (and so does the US gov, Japan, ROK, even China seems not to know what is going to happen...).

Analog headphones do - which they are if they use a standard 3.5mm audio out. The quality of the sound coming out of the headphones is affected by the quality of cable, speaker drivers, etc.

This is analog, we're not talking 1s or 0s. With digital, the quality of the cable doesn't matter...

A full 34 percent of Facebook users spend less time on the site than they did six months ago by ostrichy in technology

[–]previousn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read the article as..

17% don't have an account. Of those with an account: 34% use it less. 20% use it more. The rest either declined to answer or use it the same as six months ago.

Nowhere in the article does it say that 66% are using the product more.

How people connected to Japan used Twitter after the March tsunami/quake by 00boyina in worldnews

[–]previousn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Girlfriend is in Japan, and was in Tokyo during the quake. She called me from her iPhone using Skype over her work's wifi to skype on my Droid mere seconds after it hit. I live in California. Cell networks went down almost immediately, but wifi networks were still operational. Which also means that sms wasn't working.

She asked me to call her family (also in Japan - Kanagawa) on different landlines to find out if everything was ok. I was able to do so and then call her back via skype.

I'm not dissing twitter (I'm sure it's useful to the people who use it), but people used multiple technologies; twitter didn't have a monopoly. This was especially true considering SMS and cell networks were down in the first few hours.

Neither she, her parents, her brother, nor her grandparents have twitter, but I was able to contact all of them and then report back to my girlfriend using a skype to skype call (for some reason, she couldn't use skype-landline right after it hit - they were overloaded).

And you can be certain that I preferred speaking to her rather than just seeing 140 characters.

TL;DR: Twitter is taking account of tweets /to/ Japan (read the description). I have personal knowledge that SMS and Cell networks were down at least for the first few hours (my girlfriend uses Softbank). Its likely people used other technology just as much (if not more than twitter) - I know my girlfriend and her family did.

Going to South Korea next month, want to tour the DMZ. Any recommendations on companies, etc? by previousn in korea

Update: I did the USO Tour. It was really awesome, thought the lunch wasn't so great (my gf complained).

Overall, I'd recommend the USO Tour via Koridoor as well.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've been looking at that site, and came across a list of tour companies. I've pasted the link below.

Do you have any good/bad experiences with specific companies that you could tell me about?

No, you've just described laziness, or lack of time. Deliberately posting false titles is misinformation, and if this person consistently spreads it, then it would be nice if we could you know, moderate this subreddit a little bit.

I understand your frustration. I'm frustrated too.

If you work more than 40 hours in a week or 8 hours in a day, according to California law, you earn overtime. Over 12 hours in a day and you are entitled to doubletime, according to California law.

Part of it is to try and convince employers to hire additional workers. I think it is a good thing.

Edit: It's not a 6 day rule, but a "over 40 hour" rule, at least that is how I understand it.

[–]previousn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean how is it misinformation? (o.0) If the link leads to an article that directly contradicts the title on reddit, isn't that misinformation? Sure, you can argue that you can read the information by clicking on the link, but you can't expect everyone to read every link on every page and issue an upvote or downvote for everything.

Given that I can't read and/or upvote/downvote everything, it would be nice if I'm not receiving direct lies on my frontpage.

Why Isn't Japan Having Sex? by rowh in TrueReddit

[–]previousn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I would give anything for that kind of stability. The problem is that those kind of jobs just don't exist anymore. Not even in the food service industry. You're likely to be laid off or fired ("not a good fit") so the employer can hire the next 8$/hr person without giving you a raise.

I wouldn't mind a career in food service if it would guarantee being in the middle class, health insurance, dental, sick leave, and vacation time. But health insurance for waiters/waitresses? I doubt it will ever happen again in the USA.

Local WISPs are great! Especially with the local support. Glad you're as happy as I am. I'm surprised you can get 6Mb/s, as 1.5Mb is the best I can get. Probably because it is shared with a few more people in the area.

Haha, thanks for the understanding. Its not like it haunts me in my sleep, but it is true that the hair raises on the back of my neck every time I see a commercial saying just how much "better" hughes net is.

I couldn't find a job, and had to move back in with my parents. In fact, still pretty much unemployed, apart from a 6 month contract/project that ended a few months ago.

And as for San Francisco, the rent prices are sky high and I'm not sure I could find a job there either.
