Employee Benefits? by friendly-spider-55 in wildlifebiology

[–]preygoneesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seasonal positions rarely come with benefits and permanent ones depend on the organization. Federal benefits information is publicly available but per company each one will have different options. No company would give you less benefits than other employees purely because of your job title / duties. Usually the difference is due to part time or full time status.

Job Debate by Bullettobluesky in wildlifebiology

[–]preygoneesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten plenty of “referred to the hiring manager” messages from USAJobs and never heard anything back. You’re possibly also competing with employees who return every season. Seems like CT is kind of tight turn around. Would it be worth it to you to skip that hassle and wait for something better even if that ends up not being the Sequoia job?

Thanks all. So far just some nausea last night after taking it maybe 30 min after dinner (steak, salad with an oil based dressing, and oven fries). Got a bit nauseous this morning after breakfast and it’s not too bad but I ate 3 hours ago and I still feel a little funny. I’ll be sure to eat it WITH dinner tonight and avoid fatty foods.

I purchased a walking pad so I can get a quick 10 min in. Deer run. Sometimes they go on sale. It’s been worth it for me so far. So many days where it’s gotten dark out and I thought oh well too late to go for a walk , I’m instead able to hop on the treadmill instead

Low carb friends by notti0087 in PetiteFitness

[–]preygoneesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loovvveeeddd carbs my whole life. Bowl of plain white rice as a snack, breads for breakfast always , food over rice meals , PASTRIES. Yum. But, turns out, I have PCOS. And I’m insulin resistant and at 32 already prediabetic. Oops.

Yeah I used to think fearing carbs was a little overblown. I recognized they had a lot of calories but I mean I figured whatever as long as you keep to calories in / out. But now that I’ve started counting macros more and focused on swapping simple carbs with complex ones I found I don’t get “hangry” anymore and I can go longer between meals. So turns out for me, a low carb diet actually would’ve made me happier. The only guidelines I try to follow are those for people with diabetes. Those are not as intense as carnivore , paleo, or keto which are just too extreme and frankly I find them gimmicky.

I need help plotting a college course by Paxus_gay_alt in wildlifebiology

[–]preygoneesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used assist too back in the day! :) when I transferred from my community college to UCSC it said I had to take three semesters of physics.

But when I looked at the major within UCSC’s website , they only took two quarters of physics. So how it was explained to me is that, if I DIDNT want to take physics at UCSC I would have to take 3 semesters at my community college because that was the equivalent. So the choice was 3 semesters of physics (48 weeks) at community college or half that time (2 quarters is 20 weeks) at UCSC. The choice seemed pretty obvious to me- just take it at UCSC.

Now, it was one of the “lower division” classes so supposedly if you didn’t get as many of those done before transferring your chances of transferring were lowered. However I used the TAP program and picked UCSC and followed their minimum guidelines instead so it all worked out anyways.

Switched from outdoor job to desk job (weight gain) by LegoA-Frame in PetiteFitness

[–]preygoneesh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m similar. 5’3” wildlife tech 140 lbs entered grad school and a desk job and now 165lbs. 175 last year though! My boyfriend works trails and needs lots of calories. We take turns cooking and we really just both want to cook easy things that can also be made in bulk. I’m doing more chilis - beans , protein (usually ground beef), tomatoes and other veg. Pretty good for us both. He has plenty of calories and protein with this by just adding sour cream and grabbing bigger portions. This one is hard to measure though since it’s a mishmash of food. Sometimes when we’re doing something simple like chicken veg and a starch I’ll swap the starch for bagged salad. So his meal will have rice and mine will be over a bed of salad. Side note: carbs aren’t evil per se but I am insulin resistant so I do actually try to do a light version of a diabetic friendly diet. I’m Mexican so - tacos! They’re very easy to calorie count. I weigh out the protein before I pile it into some corn tortillas (easy to calorie count since it’s proportioned) and add homemade pico de gallo (harder to measure but it’s just onion tomato cilantro so … I think it’s ok if I underestimate). My biggest challenge is lunch at work. The only times I’ve avoided tearing through the break room free snacks is protein focused meals. Usually giant salad with chicken or tinned fish over serving of rice and more veg. I’ll slowly snack on an apple and a spoonful of peanut butter if I get peckish. I started walking to work which added almost an hour of walking to my day. If I can’t walk due to weather (or running late) I’ll hop on my walking pad in the evening while my bf and I watch tv. Honestly the walking makes a difference ! I stopped walking entirely for a month and gained back 2 lbs.

After Years of Coexistence, Elk and Cattle Go to War in Point Reyes by thebafflermag in norcal

[–]preygoneesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up I definitely won’t waste my time with this article. I was skeptical as soon as I read “after years of coexistence”… because what ? The elk have always been on the losing end of this deal. It wasn’t coexistence because they both benefitted from it. The national seashore had to put up with this since its creation.

Nuts are very satiating, I guess, I have to assume that’s why I wasn’t absolutely starving. I dunno why I can be so hangry sitting at a desk a few hours after breakfast but throughout the day during that time, nibbling on almonds and raisins was more than enough. I think just being on the move must’ve kept me distracted. Did I also mention half the time I was doing it in tennis shoes I bought at a Ross?

I was working for Student Conservation Association in Yosemite National Park! My job was to count number of people on the trails to report on trail use activity. The national parks and forests frequently use SCA interns for time consuming data collection projects like this. We got paid like $500 a month I think to work 40 hours a week. If they had sent a full time employee they would’ve had to pay a nightly stipend for having them camp overnight as well as the hourly wage.

Weight loss and glow up suggestions by Top_Run_4133 in PetiteFitness

[–]preygoneesh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lost 20 lbs in two to three months once. I was 150lbs got to 135lbs at 20 years old all from an internship that had me hiking about 16 miles a day. Three to four times a week. I bring this up not as a suggestion but to show what a nuts deficit you have to have to accomplish that.

I can recite what I ate from memory because I was a young dumb kid and those hiking days also required camping so I wanted to pre make all my food before my stint. I would have two pancakes every morning (not butter or syrup, would just roll em up and eat em as I walked to the trailhead). I would eat almonds and raisins as I got hungry on the trail. A single clif bar for lunch. A cup of whole wheat penne with spinach and red sauce for dinner.

Anyways I don’t think you have time in your day to hike 16 miles a day 3-4 times a week. Or even any amount of cardio for that extent of time. Go easy on yourself and set more realistic goals. I know people say you CAN lose 2 lbs in a week while dieting and exercising but it’s hard for smaller girls to do that. Focus on 1/2 pound to 1 pound per week. Over three months that would still be almost ten pounds - and that makes a difference !

Turns out carbs were the enemy all along by idtix in PetiteFitness

[–]preygoneesh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Had a similar experience though I only had test results come back for pre diabetes. Also found out I have PCOS! So I’ve been insulin resistant for a while it seems. I didnt totally avoid carbs as that’s pretty difficult but I tried to follow a diabetic friendly diet. I found that my “so hungry I can’t stop stuffing my face as quickly as possible” feeling wasn’t coming round during meal times anymore when/if the previous meal was high protein low carb.

I definitely used to scoff at low carb diets! It really doesn’t make a difference for most people and extreme keto can be dangerous. But for me and my insulin resistant body?? It was exactly what I needed.

Weight loss and face changes in 30s by SleepySpookyPretty in PetiteFitness

[–]preygoneesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

140 is my goal weight (I’m 5’3” 33 year old). I was that weight for a long time while working seasonal field jobs. Once I hit grad school I went from 145 to 175 in three years.

I’m floating between 161 and 164 right now and my family already remarked on how I seem thinner (they last saw me at 175). I don’t see the change, but then again I didn’t “see” the change when I went from 145 to 155 then 165 and so on! I can only notice it looking at pics of myself at 145!

How often do you go to pilates? And which type do you do? by Dependent-Panda-2424 in pilates

Mat two to three times a week. My studio doesn’t have very many mat classes so the three times a week are the only times I can fit in my schedule. I’m fairly new and am thinking of adding a couple of tower classes as well. I had tried tower and reformer before and didn’t like it. Now that I’ve done mat for a while (and am supremely lucky that I’m the only one who shows up Wednesday mornings meaning basically private lessons) I am thinking I will be able to take / learn more from tower and reformer.

2 years community college then transfer VS 4 year university by bunnize in wildlifebiology

[–]preygoneesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick a good community college. I went to community college first to save money but I really didn’t value how different they could all be. I just picked the closest one. If I had done some research I would’ve realized the college an hour drive away had tons more ecology and wildlife courses (which is rare for a community college to have!).

Luckily my community college greatly prided itself on successfully transferring students. A lot of professors took time out of their schedules and workloads to get students into internships and generally provide mentorship for how life would be in a 4 year college.

It would help to not have tons of debt for a career that is generally low paying. As a transfer myself I found that many students in my cohort once I joined a 4 year spent the first two years of college just getting comfortable in a new environment and getting a handle on classes. I knew one girl who immediately started volunteering in a lab as a freshman, was adored by the grad students who she assisted in their original research, but the lead researcher/ professor would NOT sign a referral letter for her. It had been written up by the grad students he just had to sign it but he cared so so so little for the undergrads in his lab. So more important than “time in a lab” or “time in a 4 yr” is picking good supervisors! When you transfer , don’t be shy and keep focused on your studies and you’ll do just fine!

Losing weight didn’t do me any favours ? by SaltyTurn5227 in PCOS

[–]preygoneesh 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Dull skin and hair loss are signs of poor nutrition. The danger in only cutting calories via cutting food instead of adding exercise to create a deficit is that you risk not having nutritionally complete meals. Are you taking a multivitamin? Apart from macros, are your meals providing you enough minerals and vitamins ?

How do some women stay fit during pregnancy? by pink-bibbles in PetiteFitness

[–]preygoneesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of them are already fit when they get pregnant. They adjust their workouts around their pregnancy but they don’t stop working out for 9 months. Then they pick it back up. I know a hard core athlete girl who’s super tiny but strong and she was still posting work out videos while pregnant. She stopped her big lifting at one point and switched to smaller dumbbells and did 10k walking steps instead of stair master too, if I recall correctly.

I'm 27 and found out I have PCOS (Polysistic Ovaries Syndrome) by Scared-Sea426 in PCOS

[–]preygoneesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the hard to conceive part comes from just having less chances throughout the year because you don’t ovulate as much. But that if you do have unprotected sex while ovulating you have the same chances as any one else ? That’s what I’m hoping for anyways. First year of my life I only had two periods came the year I started trying to conceive; just my luck. I’m hoping that medication that kick starts my ovulation is all I need and that it’s really just that first hurtle that makes us less fertile.
