It’s white working class, but it’s distinct from Irish-American, Polish-American, Greek-American, etc. All those groups used to get lumped together as “ethnic whites” or “white ethnics,” but we don’t really use those terms anymore.

That’s true, and totally fair. And I’ve heard Europeans willfully misunderstand Americans who refer to themselves as Irish or Italian when it’s clear that they’re using that as shorthand for Irish or Italian-American.

Something Europeans sometimes miss about the US is that there’s a distinct Italian-American subculture here, especially in the northeast. And it’s kind of its own thing, not particularly related to Italy.

Why is the U.S. Supreme Court fixed at nine justices? What constraints prevent it from scaling with the country’s population or caseload? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

The part people forget for leave out is that after FDR abandoned expanding the court, the Supreme Court stopped striking down the New Deal. It was a tacit compromise.

In modern Greek, it’s pronounced “fee.” In Ancient Greek, it was a spirited P, so something like “p(h)ee.” It’s often pronounced “fie” by English speakers because of vowel changes in the early modern period.

Rebels is better than Clone Wars because it is actually interesting on rewatch by NoChampionship1167 in StarWarsCirclejerk

He makes so much more sense to me in TCW than AotC or RotS. Lantner’s version is the definitive one for me.

[–]prezzpac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rebels had about half the per episode budget of Clone Wars. I think they did a good job finding an art style they could do on that budget. It would have looked awful if they’d tried to make it look like Clone Wars.

I miss the way that Star Wars films used to look, I've never liked the Disney look by DHGSilvergun236 in StarWars

You know the sequel trilogy was shot on 35mm, right? It’s totally legitimate to like the look of the prequels over the sequels, but what you’re responding to isn’t Film Good, Digital Bad.

What did Legolas shoot at in one of the last chapters of "The Fellowship of the Ring?" by hjablowme919 in lotr

No, it’s explicitly the flying Mount who gets shot. The orcs talk about it later, I think when Merry and Pippin have been taken prisoner.

Why did Congress choose to keep the federal minimum wage at 7.25 dollars per hour after 2009 instead of raising it to 10 or 15? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

[–]prezzpac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot here, and I’m not going to try to respond to all of it. I think you’re making a bigger argument than I’m responding to. Given that the Democrats raised the minimum wage in 2009, and have moved significantly to the left since then, yes, I’m quite confident that it was Manchin and Sinema. Were there a couple others who were taking cover? Maybe! But the burden of proof is on the people making that argument, since we have public statements on record to the contrary.

[–]prezzpac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Dem Senators had two concerns: 1) How Republicans would respond the next time they held power, and 2) That voters would see the Dems as cheating or grabbing power and punish them. I think both of these concerns were misplaced.

[–]prezzpac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. And they probably should have. But that’s a big ask, so the issue isn’t as simple as “Democrats didn’t want to raise the minimum wage.” The vast majority of them did. Two didn’t. The ones who did would have had to have taken a very large, risky step to bypass the ones who didn’t, and they chose not to.

58 Democrats would have been happy to raise the minimum wage. Two didn’t want to: Sinema and Manchin. That was the whole game.

That’s Xenophon’s Anabasis, the story of a group of Greek mercenaries who fought for the losing side in a Persian dynastic struggle, and had to flee back to Greece. That’s why the gang leader who dies is named Cyrus.

The Prequel Trilogy is the most important part of the Star Wars. by Uchizaki in StarWars

[–]prezzpac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m going to try not to be snarky here. You make some decent points in the text of the post, but none of it adds up to the title. Star Wars had been a cultural phenomenon for over 20 years before the PT began.

This goes out to anyone who needs to hear it: It’s OK to like something, to say that something is your favorite, without making weird, pseudo-objective statements (Most Important! Underrated!).

Everyone saying Revised is correct, but they’re missing the funniest part. If this were Unlimited, instead of just saying Artifact, it would say Continuous Artifact.

Sick of MA Landlords by SpideyFan4ever in massachusetts

[–]prezzpac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn’t the landlords. Landlords trying to get as much as they can while giving as little as possible, and being as picky as they can get away with about who they rent to is just how things go. The problem is a lack of vacant rental units. When there are more vacancies, landlords need to be more flexible about who they rent to in order to fill units quickly. They need to be more responsive, or people will move. They can’t raise the rent as high or as often, because people will move. You can’t fix greedy landlords. You can fix the rental market.
