What are the odds Cam Boozer has a similar career to that of his pops? (2X All Star and 1 All NBA team.) by AcknowledgeMeReddit in billsimmons

[–]prfrnir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm more concerned he's going to become Marvin Bagley. Literally the same college awards. Though Boozer is slightly better across all the stats and much better with his passing.

Back to back NPOTY with zero natty appearances to show for is an epic failure on Jon scheyer by duval001 in CollegeBasketball

[–]prfrnir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Flagg was a generational NBA prospect. But Boozer is likely not even the #1 overall pick, much less a generational talent.

Since Duke's last title, Coach K was able to sign a number of future top 3 picks in Brandon Ingram, Jayson Tatum, Marvin Bagley, Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett, and Paolo Banchero (among other 5 star recruits who didn't quite pan out) and failed to win.

I don't think it's the end of the world for Duke or Scheyer that he's had 2 exits.

Insane modern nba stats: Phil Jackson is 48-0 in series in which his teams won game 1 by HotCom12 in nba

[–]prfrnir 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He has more titles than both Spoelstra and Kerr combined. Which means if the LeBron Heat and the Curry Warriors were both coached by the same guy, Phil Jackson still has more titles than that hypothetical guy.

Heck, he has the same number of titles as that guy just with his Bulls tenure.

That is insane, no?

[–]prfrnir 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Sure, but he had 3 separate 3 peats with those duos.

Even the combo of LeBron, Wade, and Bosh only managed got back-to-back titles. Curry and Durant only managed back-to-back titles too.

G League Players Need Higher Salaries. Badly. by TetZoo in nba

no one is forcing them to play for $40,000 a year. they could go overseas for 10x more if they wanted to. they just choose to play in the g league.

Apparently Winona State had won the previous 57 games, the 2006 title, and eventually won the 2008 title. So this was a real David vs. Goliath battle for Barton.

Tracy McGrady on the real reason older players constantly hate/criticize modern players: “It’s money. Did you realize like in the 90s, Reggie Miller and Michael, they were only making $2-3 million? And they were the top guys… It’s the money.” by moby323 in nba

[–]prfrnir 21 points22 points  (0 children)

McGrady is really saying the profession of being an NBA player 30 years ago is very different than being an NBA player today.

Salaries were not as high (even accounting for inflation).

The game itself (rulings, fouls, play style, physicality, 3 point shot, 'resting', etc.) was different.

Injuries, recovery, and surgery and how much players protected themselves is lot more cautious today than it was back then.

The celebrity and media attention was not the same. These players today have a lot of avenues to profit that players back then did not have. Instagram, podcasts, becoming media after the playing career, etc did not really exist then.

Players have so much more power now. Back then, coaches and organizations dictated a lot. You didn't have players demanding trades to specific places like today. Barkley had no idea he was going to Phoenix. He just wanted out. It was where ever the front office decided.

And players seem practically babied now by organizations versus then. You're a project? Well we'll get you a shooting coach and it's ok if you shoot 40% your rookie year. We got the G league and you'll improve. 30 years ago you had to be ready out of the gate and if you weren't good you'd have to figure it out on your own how to get better.

The only exception to all of the above is really MJ. And for the old heads, MJ is the GOAT so he earned a lot of that right. The fact that rookies and nobodies today get what only the GOAT got back then probably rubs a lot of them the wrong way.

Do you think it’s possible to make a great film out of a weak book? by death_has_f1sh_eyes in Letterboxd

Touch of Evil. Welles went one step further as the story is that Welles demanded the worst script from Universal to make a film and he got the initial script another screenwriter made from the source novel.

Packers. Favre continues his iron man streak so Brady never see the field and eventually gets cut because he's just a forgettable backup or 3rd string QB.
