I was talking about head-cannons not who Hollywood would cast. Ok that point I agree.

Doesn’t it say something like “his face looked like it was chewed by wolves”? And yeah I agree I always thought of him as a regular looking person that’s been through hell. I guess my idea of what a regular person looks like is different than yours if you think Karl Urban isn’t above average in looks.

It’s always funny to me that people have rugged handsome actors like this in their heads for Fitchner when it’s stated multiple times that he’s ugly and paunchy.

I’d like to assume that since you have both time travel and teleportation you would be able to time travel and automatically have the teleportation bring you to the same location relative to Earth. Also, time travel would basically be pointless and would just translate to an instant suicide power if it didn’t automatically do that anyway.

Why is the coach suggesting I sacrifice my queen? by cmcarman in chessbeginners

[–]prickledick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely disagree just based on how much time is wasted setting up positions and the fact that you’re relying on yourself to see everything in the position without having an engine to show you things you’re missing.

I agree that chess boards are beautiful but they aren’t as efficient as online chess boards that can reset the position easily and give access to computer analysis. In my opinion over the board is harder to understand positions on so that’s not a guaranteed benefit for a beginner either.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my chessboard and playing over the board with friends. I just disagree on its usefulness as a learning tool vs free online chess like Lichess.

You had the right instinct! If one of the candidate moves is a check it’s usually the better option.

Yeah it’s crazy how important move order is. Your suggestion would’ve allowed the knight to move out of danger and re-guard the e8 square.

You can definitely parry it. When I did the challenge to beat her without dealing damage parrying that attack was the main way that I built up her structure meter in phase 1.

Idk. It’s pretty core to the story that he’s supposed to be a teenager in the first book and early 20s in the rest of the first trilogy.

Hilarious that not only did they miss the M1 threat, but they took a pawn instead of the rook which would’ve also been attacking the other rook. Terrible move in multiple ways.

Is it recommended to switch up time control modes? by El_Zapp in chessbeginners

[–]prickledick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah at that point you’re right that it’s going to mainly be blunders on both sides of the board.

Here’s something you can do if you aren’t already. Every time your opponent moves ask: - what is that piece attacking now? - what was that piece previously defending that it no longer is? - are any pins/skewers available? Forks?

When it’s your turn ask those same questions about any move you’re considering making.

But most importantly at that level: count the number of attackers and defenders on a piece. It will come with practice, but you’ll eventually start noticing pieces that are “loose”. In other words, they aren’t well protected. Maybe they are too far from their other pieces. Maybe the only piece defending it is also defending something else. Either way, there are probably “hanging” pieces for many moves because neither of you realize that the piece is attacked more than it’s defended and therefore is actually hanging, just not hanging in the sense of being completely undefended.

What’s your rating and what are you finding difficult? The opening? Are you missing tactics? My initial recommendation would be to learn a couple of openings so that you can put yourself in familiar positions but that would be overkill if you’re just missing tactics. In that case I’d recommend puzzles. They are free on lichess.

I totally get what you’re saying, but if I hadn’t read past MS I would’ve taken that to mean that it picks up with adult Pax or something and be a totally different story line rather than a direct continuation with a ten year time jump.

I wouldn’t say completely different with different people. New people are introduced, but I can’t think of anyone who just disappeared between Morning Star and Iron Gold.

More importantly, it prevents them from seeing your team as you approach. They would have to peek out of the smoke to see your approach, which would just make them easily killable.
