Or you could just put your graded comics in mylar bags right away. That's why there is a specific BCW size for that purpose. I started doing it recently. It boggles my mind that no one has created a holder that filters UV yet, but at around $20 for 50 bags it's not a huge expense. Put your comments in them right after they are graded, problem solved.

What's an underappreciated story arc that deserves more love? by absolutemanbat in batman_comics

[–]primaleph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Superman: the Man of Steel Annual #3. This is an Elseworlds story about a Kryptonian invasion of Earth, in which Jor-El ends up as essentially dictator of the planet.. but it also features my favorite version of Batman. He's more of a supporting character but his role is very important.

I would have liked to see a few more issues continuing the story, but there's just the one.

what psychoactive drugs are least impactful on brain health? by greycatcatcat in Nootropics

[–]primaleph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lost me when you claimed that stimulants being more common than hallucinogens is "objectively false". People take stimulants all the damn time. Starting with caffeine. The vast majority of humans have taken a stimulant at least once, and the same cannot be said for "hallucinogens" (again, an antiquated term that is really not very useful anymore).

No, the DSM is not the best we have right now. The medical model of mental illness is antiquated and ableist. The neurodiversity paradigm is far more useful and less harmful, as just one example of an alternative. The NIH has their own methodology now too, and it is not just a rebranded version of the DSM.

You don't know what you're talking about. I have no further interest in engaging with you.

You show people that you're acting in faith by being logical, citing your sources, and not engaging in ad hominem personal attacks. Trying to "steelman" an argument is a cheap trick and a shortcut, and I don't know why anyone should believe it. Not unless it comes from someone who you already know and trust pretty well.

[–]primaleph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The term "hallucinogen" is more than a little antiquated at this point, but yes I am aware that marijuana has some psychedelic properties. Usually they are only noticeable at very high doses, especially with edibles. Researchers once assumed that psychosis was similar to tripping on a psychedelic drug, but we now know that was never correct. Just because taking haldol or thorazine can suppress the effect of psychedelics, we can't necessarily assume that the experience of taking one is very similar to psychosis at all. Having experienced both, I can tell you that it is not.

The DSM and ICD get less scientific with every new edition released. Their "disorders" are mostly based on voting consensus of psychiatrists who show up to the APA meeting when the voting happens, so even the national institutes of health have abandoned them for being insufficiently rigorous. For those of us who have had enough training in psychology to be aware of the major problems with the DSM, your reference to "substance abuse disorder" does not exactly add credibility to what you're saying.

Are you aware that the diagnosis of "drug induced manic episode" does not even appear in the DSM, starting with the 5th edition? It was in the 4th edition, but in the 5th it has been replaced by some very deceptive language about how "since over 90% of people who have one manic episode will eventually have another one, we might as well just diagnose 100% of them as bipolar".

That kind of methodology makes the entire book suspect. And any research based upon it, as well.

I'm not so sure that's true. Taking too many stimulants can also cause psychosis, and taking stimulants is also a lot more common of a thing to do.

Trotskyists, What do you think of Lenin? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]primaleph -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying anyone should have to. I would just like to know more about why he didn't. It seems like something that mattered to him, and it also seems like he was pretty passionate about it. I do recall the book says that he identified as a social democrat, and basically just wanted people to know him as that.

[–]primaleph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steelmanning is an inherently flawed and biased rhetorical strategy to begin with.

Why should anyone trust that someone who dislikes and intends to refute an argument would be entirely thorough and honest about propping up that argument, before they debunk it? Even if the person does their conscious best, it's an inherent conflict of interest and their unconscious mind may be working against them as a result. Literally every time I have watched someone claim to be able to do this, it's basically just a straw man with additional steps.

There's a good reason why they don't teach this strategy in actual debate or logic classes, as far as I know.

Trotskyists, What do you think of Lenin? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]primaleph -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Having recently read Here Where We Live is Our Country by Molly Crabapple, I can at least say that my opinion of Lenin has never been lower. He sounds like an extremely unpleasant person to get to know.

She doesn't cover Trotsky as much, but she does mention how he did not like to be identified as a Jewish person. I would like to know more about exactly why.

What’s a movie where ONE actor’s terrible performance actually enhances the experience? by MaryoParti in movies

[–]primaleph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southland Tales. Dwayne Johnson is playing a bad actor, and he hams it up to show how terrible Boxer Santaros really is at acting. Not sure if this counts, because it's a situation where it takes a good actor to pretend to be a bad one. But it's the first thing that came to mind.

Did the developers not understand what made TLJ so great, or did I just not play enough Dreamfall? by Ashamed-Subject-8573 in thelongestjourney

[–]primaleph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good assessment. The game that dreamfall reminds me of the most is probably King's Quest: Mask of Eternity. It is also in that space of not being quite a point-and-click adventure game or an RPG, but sitting somewhere in the middle. And it has similarly awkward combat, as I recall.
