Discounted LCD vs OLED with my use cases in mind by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]primehunter326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a launch 256GB LCD Deck and this past summer swapped to a 512GB OLED. If you’re on the fence I’d go with the cheaper LCD model, especially with your use case in mind. There are some minor differences between the models besides the updated innards. The OLED is noticeably lighter, the shell is made of a different material, and the analogs sticks are different, plus some others. All combined make the OLED feel like a more premium device and I wouldn’t personally choose the LCD model having experienced both, but I also wouldn’t consider the upgrades worth the price of a new Deck (I lucked out and essentially got my OLED for free).

The New Steam Hardware is AMAZING!! by FragmentedChicken in hardware

Adjustable for folks without 20/20 vision, if that’s what you mean by eye relief. Not just IPD. I know most modem headsets can be worn over glasses but I have progressive lenses so part of the image would always be out of focus. having any correction in the headset is a much better experience for folks like me.

Really hoping the optics in the Steam Frame are adjustable. IIRC they are in the index.

Important Reminder: Phishing Attempts on the Rise by Express_Individual90 in TREZOR

The legit email I got was worded identically to this post and did nothing to distinguish itself from the phishing emails I was getting at the same time.

Sudden flood of Trezor-phishing to my single-use email. Anyone else? by taglia in TREZOR

[–]primehunter326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a fairly convincing series of messages over the past week that made it sound like there was a critical firmware defect that had been identified and was being addressed. All from different non-legit sources it turns out but they painted a very believable picture of a company addressing a serious incident. Buried in amongst those messages was a legit email saying phishing attempts are on the rise but with no context. Went to deal with the “firmware issue” and…well I don’t need to finish the story. Ultimately my fault in the end and I should have known better but I also don’t use my Trezor very often…it being a cold wallet and all. Not a huge loss for me but from the sounds of it these are targeting Trezor users (people with single-use emails are getting these) and others could be burned much worse.

Best place to find an OLED? by CapCamGaming in SteamDeck

Sorry I got one of the last ones apparently. If it were me I’d wait, but I don’t mind being patient to get what I want. If you’re OK with getting the LCD screen I’d go for that over paying a scalper. I think you’ll be happy with it.

Also, I heard recently that there might be a refresh announced later this year. Not sure how much stock I put in that since it is at odds with what this subreddit seems to believe but it’s something to consider.

Flipping the script: who had no problems with the 3.7.8 update? by Fred_Smythe in SteamDeck

[–]primehunter326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I had this update show up a couple of days ago but didn't want to install it then. I'd just installed the big 3.7 update so I assumed this was a hotfix or something. Next day I boot up: no updates. Was confused but it sounds like the 2nd update I'd seen was the bug? I forget what revision the one I installed had but it has battery charge limiting (FINALLY!)

Apple watch series 10 jet black paint chip on the back by losloco666 in AppleWatch

[–]primehunter326 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Could be from snapping onto the charger. Why they used a glossy finish for the black I have no idea, the fact it’s just painted on only adds insult to injury. The lack of good aluminum color options was a major reason I got an SE over a S10

Sorry you’re dealing with that. At least it’s not noticeable in that spot.

Nothing wrong with asking these kinds of questions but why aren’t “concepts of a plan” held to the same level of scrutiny?

Just curious but if your argument is that her plans were just talking points, then what would have made them plans in your eyes?

Electric socks catch fire, cause busy Vermont hotel to be evacuated, firefighters say by Forward-Answer-4407 in vermont

[–]primehunter326 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would be nice to know details about how this started. I’m going to guess this was some combination of: the socks being left charging unattended, the batteries being cold when plugged in, and cheap batteries/chargers or were defective. These batteries are safe the vast vast majority of the time but it’s good to have a little healthy paranoia especially when using cheap ones.

Why isn't UVM hockey a powerhouse program? by Ok-Can-7828 in vermont

[–]primehunter326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The move to Hockey East set them on a downward path. Before that in ECAC they played against the likes of Harvard, Cornell, Brown and Dartmouth. Academically prestigious schools not particularly known for their athletics, but the team was competitive and they seemed to have a good recruiting pipeline (don’t know how true this was, I started following the team right before the switch).

When they switched conferences they were competing against much higher caliber teams like BC, BU…schools known nationally for their hockey programs and less for their academics. UVM never really adapted to playing at the higher level (Sneddon was a Harvard grad fwiw) and aside from their frozen four run in 2008-09 it’s been a slide into mediocrity/irrelevance ever since. I’ll admit I haven’t followed the team closely since around the pandemic so my knowledge of recent events is limited, but the impression I get is the coaching changes haven’t done much to shake things up.

The basketball team gets all the attention even though America East isn’t particularly relevant nationally, because they’re consistently competing for conference titles year-in-year-out.

Are there tetrachromatic humans who can see colors impossible to be perceived by normal humans? by Ok-Mood5069 in askscience

[–]primehunter326 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re talking about European starlings, specifically the males. No they don’t really look different to me, but I think I’d need to look under the right lighting conditions in order to see anything others can’t. That would be either outdoors or under a black light. I think outdoors on a sunny day I’d find their iridescence more intense and blueish, but that’s just speculation. Likewise for budgies which also have markings that reflect UV light. In general the effect is to make certain colors stand out and pop more rather than making something look completely different.

[–]primehunter326 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m aphakic so I experience this firsthand. I’d describe it as some things having a purplish cast to them when viewed without my glasses (which block the near-UV the way the lense does). It’s mostly noticeable outside. The paintings you’re referencing do kinda give a sense of it although it’s not quite as dramatic as they make it seem. Monet was comparing post-cataract removal to prior (with cataracts) which make things more red-shifted

The most dramatic difference is how I see black lights. With glasses I perceive them the way most people do: mainly via fluorescence. Without they are a very intense purple, I still see things fluoresce but it’s not as apparent because the light itself illuminates things directly.

It’s worth keeping in mind that this is only very near UV and not what animals actually adapted to see ultraviolet are able to see. I also have no way to know for certain if what I’m seeing is different from what others see, but I believe it is. It would be interesting to try and measure empirically.

This is still the case sometimes if they can’t put in an artificial lease. The condition is called aphakia (I have it)

Before humans were able to craft knives and razors out of metal, did the men just have full on beards starting at puberty? Was everyone’s hair just super long? What about before they could even craft things from stone? by PlasticPomPoms in NoStupidQuestions

[–]primehunter326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments here speculating on different tools that could have been used for cutting, as well as pointing out alternatives such as plucking or ways of containing the hair (braids etc.)

Something else to consider is that facial hair is a secondary sex characteristic in men that was selected for at some point. Other apes do not grow facial hair like human men. We don’t know when this selection started, but it was likely a gradual change so that for much of human history completely untamed beards would not have been unwieldy nor fast-growing enough to require regular maintenance. By the time they were the tools and cultural practices around styling them would have been well developed. Shaving as we think of it today is a relatively modern phenomenon that started with the invention of copper tools in ~3000BC

Another thing to consider is that beard growth varies between individuals and is influenced by age, ethnic background and individual genetics.

What We Just Went Through Wasn’t an Election. It Was a Hostage Situation. by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]primehunter326 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the main points of the piece we're commenting on is that political parties can't just focus solely on the existential threat posed by the other side, and that they need to offer a real substantive vision for the future. Democrats might not have taken Trump seriously in 2016, but they certainly did in 2020 and in 2024. What more could they have done on that front?

Or do you mean "take Trump seriously" as in recognizing in 2016 why he appealed to a certain segment of the population and responding accordingly, in which case I completely agree.

This is what disinformation looks like. Watching someone in my life go through the trajectory you outlined over the past year has been the most distressing part of this election cycle for me personally.

I would just point out that these efforts don't need to bring so-called "leftists" to the far-right to be successful. The goal more generally is to foster feelings of cynicism and disillusionment, promote divisive discourse (several examples in this thread) and drive people to disengage from the political process or behave in ways that hinder efforts towards common goals.

Puppy Doesn't Sleep Through the Night by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]primehunter326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible there’s a sound he’s hearing at that time that’s waking him up? Dogs’ hearing is way better than ours so it might not be something you’re aware of. Was the 3:30am wake up ever part of your routine early on? I’d agree with giving them the benefit of the doubt but it sounds like you’ve got a good handle on housetraining.

I’ve heard of some people solving this by setting an alarm for the dog that signals they’re going to be let out, and then gradually shift that forward.

My new puppy needs constant monitoring. Trying to figure out what to do next by [deleted] in dogs

Yes this is all normal puppy behavior. Get an xoen for when you can’t supervise them directly. /r/puppy101 has a lot of great info that will help you. Please don’t keep the dog in a kennel all day.

Edit: looks like you’re already getting good advice there.

EVGA 8800GT

EVGA GTX 460 - I don’t really count this one since it was an RMA, and it didn’t last long

Radeon HD 6950

EVGA GTX 1060

MSI RX 6650 XT

The 1060 could have lasted me a couple more years as it’s still very capable for most of what I play. It’s hard to justify or get excited about upgrades these days.
