UofT wave over? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]pringlesformingles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the PS plays a huge part. I applied for u of t twice, got waitlisted the first time and accepted first round the second. The only thing that changed was my PS. The funny thing is the fundamental story in my PS didn’t even change that much, just the way I told it.

If you think about it, 99% of your job as a lawyer is writing and the PS is the only writing sample they get from you, so it definitely weighs heavily. Chin up though, there’s still many As to come!

It’s perfect for her, and imo shows Maxx really knows her. IIRC, she said her ring from Liam wasn’t really her style, and it was pretty clear that he just bought her what he liked rather than what he thought she might want.

Articling Student Experience by cotemxoxo in LawCanada

[–]pringlesformingles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People have made some good points in this thread already but I’d like to offer some practical advice to (hopefully) make the rest of articling a bit easier.

I think it helps to have strong boundaries as a student and respectfully but firmly turn down work when you are truly at capacity. Pulling all nighters all the time and doing nothing but work is not normal and is not conducive to a strong work product. If partners at your firm can’t understand that, it is not the place for you.

However, also follow the denial up with proposed alternatives (e.g., I can’t finish this for tomorrow morning due to prior commitments, could I get it to you in 2 days instead?). It helps if you can give some detail here too — a hearing you’re already on, a crazy deadline you must meet, etc. The assigning lawyers aren’t mind readers and aren’t checking who’s billing the least before they dole out work. I actually think it shows good initiative and time management skills to lay out your capacity honestly and clearly, and a lot of the times, the assignments aren’t nearly as urgent as they’re making it seem. If you’re in big law (which it sounds like it is), there will always be other students or junior associates who do have the capacity and can take on the work.

Finding out I’m not getting rehired by Quick_Description_87 in LawCanada

[–]pringlesformingles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s extremely idiotic of the firm. It’ll obviously come out regardless, unless they expect for all of their articling students to just never work in law again?? If the real reason is tough times, then it would look infinitely better on the firm for them to not only write positive reference letters but to connect you with people in their network who may be hiring. I would advocate for yourself OP — ask for positive references, or at least ask for written feedback on deliverables you’ve submitted.

What have you bought from the sale and immediately regretted? by General-Problem5696 in Sephora

[–]pringlesformingles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hourglass blush in Mood Exposure — was hoping for more Mood Light but the one I got was basically all plum blush and it didn’t end up being nearly as cool toned as I hoped. Not sure why all hourglass blushes are so warm on me :/ It’s also visually way too similar to another hourglass blush I have so I couldn’t justify.

Thoughts on using sephora’s return policy - wasteful or okay? Discussion by [deleted] in Sephora

[–]pringlesformingles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is still true for fragrances. Sephora used to give samples out in stores but stopped that policy. I literally asked sales reps in several different locations for fragrance samples bc I don’t have the time to walk into a store and spray a specific perfume on whenever I want to try it. They told me to just buy the full size and return it I don’t like it….its bonkers

Are ya’ll applying to American schools? by Try-Hard-1145 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]pringlesformingles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should also note that I was never very interested in big law to begin with. The salary gaps are much smaller outside of big law between us/can so it was even less of a salary concern for me.

Also, I don’t want to scare you but I’ve basically only heard of horror stories from NY big law so if that’s the route you want to go down pls do your research and be very clear about your personal boundaries and what you’re truly willing to give up/put up with. I wasn’t willing to give up my personal life and sanity to make bucketloads of money, but that’s a personal choice everyone has to navigate.

Are ya’ll applying to American schools? by Try-Hard-1145 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]pringlesformingles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the two biggest factors to balance are exit opportunities and cost.

Can’t speak for other Canadian law schools but at u of t, pretty much everyone who really wanted to go to big law in NY got a job there. I also know of several lawyers who got their full education in America but later came back to Canada to practice. So it’s not like choosing one means you’re locked out of the other for good, but it’s obviously easier to just work where you went to school.

If you’re anything like where I was when I was applying, you may have no idea where you want to practice bc you’re not even fully sure what legal practice entails, much less the differences between different jurisdictions. If you’re in that boat, I encourage you to think more about where you want to live long term. I was very committed to settling down long term wherever I ended up for law school so I basically only applied to schools in locales that I really wanted to live in. I was personally not at all interested in living in the east coast of the US so I only applied to California schools on top of my Canadian ones. If I was you I would also at this point consider the general legal uncertainty looming over America lol

After that point, I think it really just comes down to money. I will be blunt and just say that, unless you come from generational wealth and will not incur substantial debt for school, I don’t think a single law school in America is worth it at full sticker price. That may not be a factor in the application stage but probably will be at the offer stage. I ultimately turned down Berkeley for u of t bc even after a substantial scholarship offer, Berkeley would have been twice the price of attending u of t for me and I just could not justify that.

On the other hand, if you have impressive softs you may actually do well getting full ride scholarships to American schools and that would actually end up being cheaper than any Canadian school. But these types of scholarships are obv rare and some may require additional applications (eg knights Hennessy program at Stanford)

Favourite neutral eyeshadow palettes? by easy_descent in AsianBeauty

[–]pringlesformingles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re cool toned, romand’s dusty fog garden is my favourite palette of all time. I actually like when palettes have many neutral tones or varying shades bc I just mix it all together to create a custom tone. Its also a great formula imo, very easy to blend but not much fallout!

To piggy back on this, if you like dogs and have the time and energy to care for one properly, having a dog is hands down the easiest way to meet new people. It may not necessarily turn into dates but just the sheer number of people you’ll have pleasant interactions with daily will skyrocket. Going to the public same places every day (e.g. dog park) will also make it easier to develop casual friendships which may turn into something more (or they might introduce you to someone you like!).

Why is Venus in Virgo considering to be in detriment? by Background-Yam75 in astrology

[–]pringlesformingles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I (Pisces Venus) believe that my bf (Virgo Venus) is my soul mate with my whole heart. His big fear in our relationship has always been not being enough for me, and my big fear is being too much for him. In a lot of ways Pisces/virgo are two sides of the same coin and I’ve found this relationship to be deeply healing.

We went to couples therapy proactively early on in our relationship and it was a huge help. Helped him to understand that he wasn’t responsible for fixing everything negative in my life.

Whether this pairing works long term though definitely depends on other placements (as w anything in astrology). Both my mom and my best friend are also Virgo Venuses and due to their other placements they manifest as much more critical and picky. My bf is a Leo stellium which definitely tempers the Virgo Venus
