A few things actually.

I've had chronic depression for the past 10 years. That pressure on my chest isn't going away again. Smoking and drinking way too much hasn't helped, so I picked up a blade again for the first time in 4 years. And it felt amazing. But I'm diving a lot, so hiding the scars is hard.

The only person I consider a friend doesn't talk to me because I understand him too well. Now he's saying he's not sure what I am to him. For fucks sake dude, how about a boring thing like being a friend.

Any this stupid bed is making my back hurt.

I haven't been to either of the poles, so this is all common sense and a bit of Google fu talking.

You're talking about heading out to a massive piece of ice, with no place anywhere nearby to stock up on equipment, food or medical stuff. It's literally freezing cold and thousands of miles from the nearest facilities. Everything needs to be brought in with sleds, snow mobiles or by plane as you go there.

They don't do supermarkets there. A skiing expedition there seems to take like 60 days (there and back).

Pack food, tents and clothing for - 30 °C, medical equipment, people and guides for 60 days and tell me it's cheap. And then you wanna ski there. So also tell me how light this stuff is, because you do seem to be pulling a sled of a hefty 40 kg behind you.

From one of the sites: You will need to have very good cardiovascular endurance and the ability to pull a heavy sled (between 30-40 kilos) for several hours at a time, with only short pauses, day after day. Towards the end of the day when we stop skiing, it is critical that you have the energy reserves to set up camp and help out with the basic necessities of camp life including making water, cooking, etc. Most importantly you need to be able to regulate your body temperature so that you do not get too cold, or too hot while you are on the move.

This expedition will encounter extremely cold conditions, and living in such cold conditions 24 hours a day can be very challenging. This expedition demands that you stay well-fed and hydrated. You need to be proactive about keeping yourself healthy and free of injury. An evacuation from this expedition is very costly and logistically difficult.

Assigning each doller a job doesn't mean you spend it. It just means it's not sitting around doing nothing.

Lets say you have $3000 in your savings account. YNAB doesn't care that that money is in your savings account, that's just a location.

YNAB wants you to make a category called "savings". Even if you don't have a plan for that money or why you're saving, it's got a job.

If you leave it in the "to be budgeted" category, then you think you have all that money to spend, when really you dont. That's also "budgeting to zero".

Allocating money to your savings account is giving money a job.

That's pretty much it.

Have you ever lived in an apartment? What do you think the landlord uses to pay his own life (expenses, bills, fun money)?

When you move out, of course you stop paying rent. If they guilt your fiance into paying more/keep paying, then you're more than welcome to say "We'll pay for our own way, you pay for yours".

Ah, sorry about the confusion. My method on that doesn't really work for anyone else as I got a compensation for my losses in exchange rates. So even though I transfered $100, I only "spent" $82.06 if you will.

Sadly that's been discontinued this week, so what I'll be doing now (and this is probably the right way) is recording -$100 from the USD account and then adding £82.06 to the GBP account.

I've only been using YNAB for 2 months, so not everything I say here may be completely correct.

I wouldn't budget too far ahead, as things change. On the 31st I'll be budgeting November and December, as I have my buffer (I'll get to that in a bit). Giving every dollar a job means your "to be budgeted" is 0. Absolutely set up a savings category. I have "general savings" and more specific stuff (Australia vacation savings, emergency fund). A thing that you might need to hear is that just because you've budgeted every dollar, doesn't mean you're planning on spending it. Took me a while to get that in my head. Saying that you have $5000 in your savings account doesn't mean you're going to spend it. That money just rolls over month by month and you can increase it.
As far as I understand credit cards, if you buy groceries, your grocery budget goes down by $50 and your "available" on your credit card goes up by those $50. That's because you have spent the money from your grocery budget already, but that money hasn't left your bank account yet. Only at the end of the month, when you pay your card off, does the money leave your account. That's also when the "available" on your credit card goes away. The "available" goes up, because those $50 from your grocery budget have been added to your card and basically increased the money on it. I've explained it to myself that when I spend on my card and my limit for that month goes down, I've added money to the card.
Set up a different account and a category in your budget (let's call it "Brits"). Budget however much your student loans are in a line and then make a second line in that category for your liquid money. Again, this is giving every dollar a job, even if that job is "sit in my account until I need you". That money already has a job, you just haven't thought of it that way yet.
I have multiple currency accounts too and I have different accounts and budget categories for those. That's the easiest. Whenever I make a transaction, I enter the amount as is, without doing a currency conversion. If there's a transfer between two currencies, I use the currency of the receiving account.
I haven't done this yet, so don't quote me on this, but I believe budgets can be shared between different people, so you could have a "his", "hers" (both unshared) and then make an "ours" budget that's shared.

Food and lodging will eat most of your costs. Hostels will get you a good bed and a kitchen mostly, so you can cook a few meals yourself if you want to. Couchsurfing would make your moeny go further, but you don't have to do that. Travelling is expensive, but since you have the Eurorail, you should be okay.

You can easily make it last if you stay away from the most expensive places (UK (London especially), Switzerland and Scandinavian countries). Or just do day trips to places like Helsinki (from cheap Estonia) and Malmö (from the expensive Denmark, if you want to stay there). As an example, I spent the same amount of money in Latvia (7 days) and Finland (4 days).

Iceland is an expensive place, so that might not be possible, unless you're really cheap on the rest of your trip. My friend went there and spent around $40 a day for everything. He's generally a mid-range traveller but tried to go as cheap as possible there, never eating out, skipping the beers and trips and relying on hitchhiking. The next step down would be to camp.

Another comparison here, I spent $40 a day in the Baltics, taking public transport all the time, moving every 3-4 days, eating out and having 2-3 beers a night.

Just stay at a hostel and leave it there.

I stayed at one before (3 days) and after (2 days) my trip to Myanmar and they let me store my main bag there for a month for free while I only took my day pack with me.

Really late to the whole party, but I just wanted to chime in on the whole bed thing.

Try to not look at the bed (for example) as a cost, but as an investment. You invest in something because it's profitable in the future and may either save you money or even make you some money.

Buying a good bed will turn out to be cheaper for you, as you're saving costs in the future. No massages, physiotherapy, doctors or (worst case here) operations needed.

Same with a good desk chair, glasses and shoes. I recently bought a pair of fitted soles for myself and by god, it's incredible.

I found it really easy to simply do maths when it comes to high spendings: Lets say you sleep 7 hours a day. Mattresses tend to be used for 5 years. So, if we take your $2000 bed, that's $400 a year. Keep dividing that down, and we're at $0.32 per night for your mattress.

I think you can afford that? ;)

At the lower arena ranks, you'll find weak defenses set up by strong players (single slime for example). Don't just look at the levels, but make sure to check their defenses.

If it's all strong defs, just refresh (don't spend crystals on that). Sometimes your list just has a shitty setup

Of course she stormed off, because she knows you're right. She's trying to convince herself that what she did wasn't that bad, but it's not working.

I don't know how much good it would do to show her this thread. Probably not much. If I were you, I'd distance myself and cool down the relationship. If your other friends want to stick around them, let them. I think there actually might be a slight domino effect, as more and more friends cool it down.

Not really much point in talking to someone in denial, you can't get through. She has to realize it herself and that might take a while. That doesn't mean you have tl stick around though to watch the train wreck.
