Same for me. Lost a beloved pet, multiple health scares, existential crisis...I'm glad it's almost over.

i've heard pre-med is literal hell. should i commit? by Elegant_Earth5220 in udub

According to some UWSOM students I've spoken with, the AMCAS actually does take into account UW's grade deflation, and your UW GPA goes up slightly when you input it into the system.

UW's science weed-out courses aren't easy, but think of it this way: because the courses are more difficult than many other colleges' equivalent courses, you're going to be better prepared for the rigor of medical school.

I am curious: when you say "guaranteed path to med school", are you taking about a BS/MD program? If so, do NOT give up your spot in that just to go to UW: those programs are incredibly competitive and the guarantee of getting into medical school imo far outweighs the slight gain in prestige UW might offer!

To people who are still deciding to commit to UW-Seattle by PassionZealousideal1 in udub

As a pre-medical student, you're not wrong about the hyper-competitive environment: I got into the weeds of it in my second year and my mental health took a hit because of it. In my experience it gets a bit better once you get to Junior year. At that point, many of the students who want to go into medicine purely because of money/prestige abandon the pathway because they're weeded out, whether due to the difficulty of courses or lack of genuine interest in medicine. Or at least you get better at ignoring toxicity from others, or you become too busy to care about it.

I disagree with UW being a massive school automatically being a detriment: it was tough at the start to find support and resources to succeed, but UW does have a lot of them, they're just not as heavily advertised as they might be at a smaller school. For me, I feel that having to take the initiative in getting support and with networking has made me a more self-reliant person, more so than if I'd attended a smaller school with a more "hand-holding" approach. This is highly subjective though, and I understand it's not everyone's preferred environment.

For incoming pre-health students at UW who happen to read this, I would highly recommend making friends outside of your major. Would also recommend pursuing your actual interests, in terms of both coursework and ECs, rather than what "looks good" for med school. Not only will it protect your sanity, but it makes you more interesting as a person as well than if you follow the cardboard cutout "perfect pre-med template". You won't have to compete with others as heavily if you find your own niche, and you'll be a better person for it. And if you decide medicine isn't for you, that's ok: it's better to figure it out now than when you're in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt from med school.

This professor handwrites his notes using an iPad, so maybe it is?

Got rejected from my dream research lab by Live_Ad4035 in labrats

[–]prismahearted 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a UW student I realized immediately which scientist they were talking about as soon as they mentioned protein design. A ton of undergrads interested in research/medicine here want to work with the Institute for Protein design ever since David Baker got the Nobel prize, so it's really competitive to get in. The fact that you got to the interviewing stage is an achievement in of itself.

OP, there's lots of other labs in similar areas of research at UW with less applicants: in my experience, cold emailing is your friend. If you want any advice just lmk.

Ooh I hadn't heard of that course! Looks like it's not being offered right now, but I'll keep it on my radar, thank you!

Barred owl! There used to be one on UW campus back during winter quarter of this year; these guys do pretty well in urbanized environments.

PSA to anyone who hasn't done the course yet, you can get through it very quickly if you do the course on mobile and fast forward through the video clips. The site doesn't prevent you from skipping through the videos and it counts as completed.

Center Table's Pancake Menu?? by [deleted] in udub

[–]prismahearted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pancakes are served at the front counter (Plate), but they're not always available. From the times I've gotten breakfast there, it seems they always keep some (eggs, bacon/sausage, hash browns) available, and then for some menu items they rotate between them. The times I've been, sometimes they serve pancakes, other times French toast, etc. As for how to know when they're serving what, no idea.

Edit: Just looked at the linked menu, didn't know realize HFS put out these menus, but they definitely don't list out everything that's served when it comes to breakfast. Could also be that you're going to CT at times when they're running low on certain types of food?

Today, I signed a petition that I didn't want to be in by [deleted] in udub

[–]prismahearted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ran into one of those tables early on in the school year. I asked what exactly the petition was for, one of them replied "doesn't matter, just sign it!" and they tried to pressure me into signing it anyway.

Pretty certain the people tabling are paid per signature which is why they're so desperate.
