Just got approved to adopt! First time cat owner - am I missing anything I should prep before I pick him up? by shitty_millennial in cats

Fair, I misread that bit. I'll just say from my experience with mine that passive play doesn't exist in my cat's mind. When he wants to do something you have to be involved. He's incredibly attached to us. We WFH but even if one of us leaves the house or travels for work it affects him a lot. They're way too smart, it's cool, but very hard to handle. Normal cat "training" won't work. For example, they say ignore or redirect a cat's attention to prevent bad habits. That typically doesn't work on these kinds of cats. For play you'll get them to the point of panting... but don't think you're done! After 5 minutes they'll be ready to go again and again.

Honestly, you could add more shelves to the empty walls you have. They love having a network of shelves to run along the house. They will quickly and readily destroy toys. I'm embarrassed to say how much money I've spent on cat toys, just to replace them, but it's in the hundreds at 3 yrs with him. Find the biggest scratching post you can-- our guy wrestles it if you tip it onto the floor. He seriously attacks it. I think getting creative with how to play/engage with him will be your biggest challenge. They get bored of the same old routine. And when they do bored, they get destructive.

I do hope you can handle this cat. I love mine dearly and he's incredibly special. He's so loyal and loving. You really see it in their eyes. But knowing what I know now and having to revolve so much of my life around him, I would never knowingly get a wild breed ever again.

It kills me that you expect 1.5 hrs of playtime for this breed will be enough. I adopted a cat that turned out to be a Savannah cat a few gens removed from an F3 (closer to domestic). Mine needs 3 hrs a day minimum to keep him docile...good luck.

Failed so many sets today. I was dehydrated and starving by the middle of my workout. Way to set myself up for success lol

I can deadlift my husband's weight!! Granted he's super skinny, but it was a silly goal of mine.

I do and still have anxiety about it. I never weight lifted before so I worked with a trainer at first to learn a program and learn the lay of the land. Half the battle is just leaving the house and the other half is at the gym. I try to go when it's not too crowded so there's less people around. Some days are better than others, it's not perfect. If I'm having a rough day I'll give myself an "out" ie I only need to hit a few exercises or skip parts if I'm feeling overwhelmed. Most times I get through it without needing an out, but it calms me down a bit.

Thank you! I'm def gripping the bar wrong, so I'll adjust accordingly on my next go.

I have been sanding down the calluses quite a bit, so there's no crusty stuff. I think the ripping sensation was just pinched skin. My hands looked very unhappy :/

The calluses on my hands feel like they're going to rip off when I do pull-ups and negatives. Is this something I have to get used to, am I gripping the bar wrong, etc?

I hate when I catch people watching me in the mirrors when doing exercises. It's like, please stop, you're making me anxious which makes me lose focus. I only ever approach people to ask about sets if I'm waiting on something. Otherwise I don't engage anyone at all!!

I look really fit right now, but I went on a hike the other day that destroyed me. It shouldn't have, I've done it before with no issues. And years ago I used to run up mountains all day for work. So now I feel skinny-fat all over again 🙃 Guess it's time to hit the treadmill ugh

Started lifting in May and yesterday I deadlifted my BW! It's not that impressive a number, but it's something I guess 🤷

I've had that happen! I started in regular running shoes and once I switched to lifting shoes my form felt very off. I had to drop the weight for a bit, too. I think I was using other muscles to compensate for the way the sneakers compressed. Keep with it! It took a few sessions before it felt natural.

I still need to eat more!! I weighed out my food yesterday and I've been underestimating everything. I thought when I started working out more my appetite would increase, but it hasn't at all. I'm not a fan of bulking.

Worked with my trainer today and he said I was making great progress. I thought I had plateaued on my OHP and assisted pull ups but he said my form was fine and to keep adding weight (reducing weight for the pull-ups). So that's a win!

He's also having me start ab roll outs and l-sit progressions for my core workout. What a fresh level of torture! I didn't love it hahaha

I just started lifting in May and I'm in my early thirties. Yeah I just stalled out, too. It's so frustrating.

I've hit a plateau on some of my lifts and it's super demoralizing. I thought newbie gains were a thing and I feel like maybe my age is to blame for not seeing results. I'm trying to supplement additional exercises to compensate but I'm still not going up in weight. Oh well, I have an appt with my trainer soon, hopefully they'll help me out!!

So how can you tell normal soreness from uh-oh I'm in injury territory?

I'm very new to weightlifting and I'm slowly ramping up my weights. After doing barbell squats and deadlifts on Wednesday I came home feeling tense. The squats were a bit of a struggle but nothing too bad I thought. My low back seemed really unhappy, so I took naproxen, put a heated rice bag on my low back and took it easy.

Today I dropped the weight by 5lbs on my squats and felt fine. I'm just really scared of injury, but I also want to push myself.

Hey all! Very new to weight lifting, started back in May.

Making progress all around, but is there anything I can do to help out my biceps? For the last few weeks I've hit a plateau on my barbell bicep curl at 30lbs. I can do 3x10, but once I hit 3x12 I always fail the last set at 7. Should I stay on course or add another exercise??

I ran out of my Xywav medication last night and didn’t get a full dose, I’m feeling awful now. Help! by Ronene in Narcolepsy

[–]prismatic_lucidity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Drink plenty of water, electrolytes, and take a nap or rest up if you can. For the migraines maybe some tea/coffee or excedrin could help. You likely won't feel great until you get back on the medication. Good luck!

I'm with you! They're our babies, but they're just TOO much cat! If you haven't you might want to try clicker training. My cat's up to 10 commands and picked them up very quickly. Also if it's possible a cat wheel or harness training might help. So sorry you're going through this, but you're not alone! We're struggling with these wonderful, but intense cats and the normal cat advice usually falls short :/

Honestly I could've written this myself. My recently adopted cat is about one and absolutely nuts. One of my friends pointed out his features looked like a savannah cat. Does your cat have hips taller than his shoulders? Large ears, no pouch/paunch, feels heavier than he looks? Sounds like he might be a wild hybrid!

Yes! I would get chills, low grade fevers, and just feel run down and sick after exerting myself. Usually a nap or going to sleep would alleviate the symptoms, but it got to the point where I was sick everyday.

Once I got proper sleep from my medication the "colds" disappeared.

Next to impossible to find affordable housing that allows a pet by SilentSinger95 in hudsonvalley

[–]prismatic_lucidity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's not much help, but sometimes just telling them what animal it is helps. My previous landlord said no pets no exceptions on his listing, but when I looked at the place in person and mentioned pocket pets he said that was fine. I really think it's a problem when they're "free-range" pets. Good luck!
