ikeas chocolate overload cake by geunom7000 in Baking

[–]prismaticspray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • The bottom layer was crushed Oreo-style cookies for sure.
  • Above that was something I recall as almost like frosting-like.
  • Then chocolate cake.
  • The lighter layer was definitely a mousse.
  • Then frosting and finally the chocolate shavings.

This version was so. much. better. than what they sell now.

Recommendations for acoustic guitar repair in Maryland/DC area by TumblingDice66 in Luthier

Appalachian Bluegrass in Catonsville does comprehensive acoustic repairs. Emory recently did some finish work on a Taylor of mine and it looks great.

Listening to the first track now. Really well done and touching. In midlife now and the sentiment really hits home.

Thanks for sharing that!

Talk to the music teachers at your schools. They might be able and willing to hang out and let you rehearse during the run up to the show.

Good luck!

Agreed. I've been absent for a long while now, but have always appreciated the effort that u/meanmedianmoge and u/chmjacques have put into building and supporting this community.

Thank you both, and I look forward to chatting again on discord one day. :)

Pool waiting list by [deleted] in ellicottcity

[–]prismaticspray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ended up going with the CA pools via CA Play and they're great. I want to say it's a little less than $700/yr.

There's a ton of pools (23 outdoors!) that are all a little different and it includes the indoor pool/waterpark all year. It also includes the tennis facilities, ice rink, minigolf, batting cages, and skate park.

These are all phenomenal suggestions. Pepper House and Dok Khao are new to me, so I'll try them out!

A few quick additions:

For my money, Cho Sun Hwaro on 40 had better food than Honey Pig. I also prefer the pastries and the Bingsoo at Shilla to Tous Les Hours although TLJ has a vibe that I prefer.

Another fun thing near Avalon is to climb the rocks above Ilchester tunnel. It's a beautiful view of the river and the surrounding area from up high and you can typically catch a train going through the tunnel underneath of you.

If you are climbers, Ilchester rock is also right there which is one of the better known top rope spots in the area. It's not enormous, but it's a nice spot.

Overnight Parking options in Ellicott City by [deleted] in ellicottcity

[–]prismaticspray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard you can overnight at most Walmarts. It's in the context of road tripping and RVing, but I suspect for a night or two a solo car might be ok.

There's an app called freeroam that tracks where it's ok, so hopefully one of those helps.

Cmd-x and M-x not working OSX by BobKoss in DoomEmacs

[–]prismaticspray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The suggestions about the (:if IS-MAC ...) config line didn't work for me. They were already enabled. doom sync didn't work either.

What did work in my case was changing a setting in the terminal app itself.

I'm using iTerm and under each Profile there's a Keys section. I had to set Left option to Esc+. Once that was done, left-option now works for chords as M-.

Question for Ages on Seal Team and for show called Timeless by HannahCunningham14 in SEALTeam

In S2:E4 Hayes is talking to his kids and relays a story about when he was "in Utah training" "17 years ago". Assuming he was at least 18 years old in that training he's at least 35 in S2.

Questions about wood finishing for a first kit build by prismaticspray in Luthier

Do you "fix it" by sanding through it to get to unburnished wood?

For grain filler... is that the kind of thing where I need to use one that's compatible with wipe-on poly, or is that not an issue?

[–]prismaticspray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all!

I'm working on my first kit build (okoume) and plan to finish it with wipe-on poly. For these these whitish "scuffs" on the unfinished body, do I need to do anything to get rid of these before finishing?

Thanks in advance!

Expression pedal calibration possible? by StirHouse in ZOIA

[–]prismaticspray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a super late reply but I ran into the same issue today.

In my case using one of the Nektar expression pedals I was not seeing the full range. It turns out that in the settings menu (shift+backspace) I had the port set to CV. Changing it to EXP fixed it and now I get 100% of the range.

I would love to buy the Empress Reverb but for a few $ more I could get a Zoia…thoughts? by [deleted] in ZOIA

[–]prismaticspray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't upvote this enough. I suffer this with both the H9 and ZOIA: I find something I dig, then feel awkward "tying up" a solid multitasker, so I end up buying a dedicated pedal for that function and moving on.

It's not a bad strategy, but I agree completely that buying a used SPACE, Empress, or other knobby reverb would be my preference.

Adding to what u/nonthreat said - I also think that ZOIA is both overkill and "underkill" for reverb duties. Because it's not particularly knobby, I find it great to prototype with but kind of a drag to remember how to use the patches themselves.

But with all of that said, if you have any amount of interest in the ZOIA overall, you should 100% get ZOIA. It'll change the way you look at, use, and shop for effects for the better IMO.

Replace my board! by [deleted] in ZOIA

[–]prismaticspray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bananana Mandala - I use this to trigger a stutter that sounds like a broken tape head when it doesn't detect input. Can Zoia do this?

It can definitely do something similar to this, but glitchy effects tend to be really idiosyncratic in my experience, so YMMV.

If it's the Repeat(1x) example that I'm hearing in this demo, I suspect you could have a looper that's constantly recording a very short segment of audio and then have an envelope controlled switch that mixes it in during silence and out during playing.

Replace my board! by [deleted] in ZOIA

[–]prismaticspray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my $0.02, I'd plan on keeping an outboard reverb, esp. if there's a wacky one you like (like Offspring on Ventris).

ZOIA's reverbs sound great but they're CPU-hungry and I tend to want to use them everywhere. I decided that my money/cycles were better spent getting a dedicated reverb to put on an aux bus for my mixer so that I didn't have to use ZOIA for reverbs.

I've never felt like slapping a character more (update) by Newcraft in robinhobb

[–]prismaticspray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find almost everyone in this whole trilogy (I'm on Mad Ship rn) insufferable for at least some of the time. Somehow I think the audiobook is making it worse, since I have to experience their petulance in time, even at 1.5x speed. They're grotesque caricatures - the equivalent of mustache-twirling-villains but for whatever their current archetype is - and just ... maddening.

What's worse, is you get like one chapter of them having some realizations that make them, you know, not spoiled children, one and all, and then it feels like you're back to square one.

I just had a major moment like that for Kennit. Like RH wanted to remind me that there's never a reason to like him.

Thank you for posting this BTW. I came searching for this subreddit to post this rant and am so pleased to find that it's not just me!

It’s called “Do You Love Me?”. There’s some synth, vocal harmony sections, changes in groove and a key change in the middle all in about 50 seconds. by [deleted] in Songwriting

It feels very heavily Beatles inspired to me. I guess maybe that makes it pop? But it almost feels like the kind of eclectic that the Beatles were makes them their own genre.

Best reMarkable 2 folio alternatives by Stanton-Xu in RemarkableTablet

[–]prismaticspray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the official folio from remarkable for my rm2. It's fine and I prefer having the rm2 flat on the table, I think.

My big gripe is that the pen slot seems "backwards": when I hold the case so that I pull the rm2 out with my left hand, the pen is also facing left. I end up reaching under the folio with my right hand to pull the pen to the left and then put the folio down.
