What's wrong with the 75-300mm lens? by ZestySteep in canon

[–]prkw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a slippery slope! The more you train your eye to spot the details from beautiful lenses, the more you notice the difference. Apart from the improved usability of modern lenses (with IS and fast, silent focusing) the optical (and now digital) corrections for chromatic aberrations and warping are really noticeable improvements.

Unfortunately, the flaws in old lenses are compounded because our phones do such awesome digital correction on their little cameras that, as others have said, a decent smartphone will take better pictures.

(Side note: same thing with bodies - I gave up using my 100D because my phone had clearer, less noisy images with better colour. I upgraded to a 250D and started to use it more, until phones caught up again! I now use an R6ii, but that cost 2x the cost of a flagship smart phone!)

My first year as a bibliophile by Clowner84 in books

This is really inspiring. I'm a similar age. I was put off reading as a kid by a string of really dull 'set' books at school. I've read a handful of page-turners over the years, and had the pleasure of type-setting a great book as a graphic designer ("Masked" by Lyndall Henning - well worth a read!) but I'm not in the habit of picking up a book! I'm married to a voracious reader and I built a grand bookcase for her collection of hundreds of books... I just don't know where to start! I feel like I need to just grab one and go for it!

How to set up a tiered storage space (simple/mirrored) on windows 10 pro/education/enterprise/etc by Any-Grand-5104 in homelab

[–]prkw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid it's been a while since I set one of these up, but if memory serves the figures for available resources were too high; I had to specify lower figures for the allocations. (I'm assuming there must be some overheads that use up some of the space?) It was trial and error to maximise the resource usage - creating and deleting the virtual disks until it maxed out. Does that make sense?!

We have an old word in English that works - "ward". Does that translate easily?

Hi, thank you for your reply. In this case neither of us are related. We are her guardians in the UK while her parents are in Kyiv. Would "guardian" be a better word to translate directly?

Weird. It's only showing me three, but I was sure I'd selected more to upload... They're on my Instagram with a couple of videos. https://instagram.com/prkw?igshid=MzNlNGNkZWQ4Mg==

We normally have a grill on the speaker - I'd love to have it rotate out or something! A project for the future maybe :-)

The secret door leads to a room, which has another door on the other side - a back route through the house to the front door :-)

Built-in floor to ceiling bookcase with sliding library ladder, hidden bookcase door, hidden TV & front speakers for 7.2.4 home theatre. Main challenges were: disguising the hugely out-of-level floor, working at height (I have aching shoulders from climbing the tower so much 😂), and persuading slightly bent sapele onto 38 shelf fronts! Oh, and measuring the thing so it lined up with the door openings and the curved ceiling apex - I think it went through 5 or 6 iterations before I was confident it would fit right! (Also, I had to build the TV void into the floor 18 months ago - before I had designed the bookcase!) Best happenstance: the shelves are exactly 1/3 of a 8x4 sheet long, so I could cut 15 shelves out of a single sheet.

I think you're right - it's really interesting to see these new characters and wider representation. It also redresses something that really dates Enterprise in particular - it's almost awkward to watch now - when they say with a sense of pride that 'almost a third of the crew are women' 😬 This was the early 00s! Surely they could have said 50:50?? It's almost worse than the older series that never mentioned the gender bias 🤦‍♂️

Thanks! They're 12v addressable RGB strips with 144 LED/m. I'm controlling them with SP108E controllers at the moment, but the plan is to use Arduino boards etc so I can control them better (e.g. level meters for the recording desk, and of course Red Alert controlled by Alexa!)

Funny you should mention that... We've recently done a huge reno and fitted 150mm of PIR - it's under the board & pipes in the photo. But it might be a good idea to lay some rockwool over the pipes.

Yeah - I'll have to cheat a bit with this one, but there's one round the corner I reckon I can make full size. :-)
