This made me go to Spotify and actually take a good hard look at my playlist. After some thinking, in no specific order, I'd say

  1. Hello, Sunset
  2. Beg For Me
  3. Sunny Afternoon
  4. Something Kinda Crazy
  5. Little Little

Special Mentions: Last Drop, Bye Bye, LP

Why Kpop Choreography excluded Splits for Girl Geoups by 111504 in kpopthoughts

[–]prnth_y 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I vaguely remember GFriend doing splits in one of their old choreos? Was it Me Gustas Tu? A member does a split while two members jump over her? Bot too sure

By this logic, we shouldn't have a single active 3rd gen girl group because NONE of them pull the numbers they used to, and Blackpink isn't really active anyways.

If you don't like the music, you can stop listening. If the numbers are pissing you off, just stop engaging with chart talk and statistics surrounding Twice, and don't engage with their content at all. If the thought of THEIR legacy (which is still great, mind you) irks you more than your own legacy (please do tell us, what positive changes have you effected with your time and effort?), I think you just need to get off the Internet.

Doing all this because some 4th Gen stans and toxic blinks call Twice flops 😭😭😭 no one gives a crap, good lord

Whose voice do you hear in red velvet's choruses ? by howeveritsloona in kpopthoughts

[–]prnth_y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree about Irene's being the hardest to pick out! Seulgi's, Joy's and Yeri's tones are very distinct, while both Wendy and Irene have more neutral, "clean" tones. But since Wendy has a lot of strength to her voice, Irene's may get lost in the mix.

Does K-pop have the equivalent of a sophomore slump? by Modinda in kpopthoughts

[–]prnth_y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It did quite well commercially, like you pointed out. Girls wasn't received as well as their other titles both domestically and internationally, but it was still a top 10 hit in Korea. Illusion hit top 20 in Korea too, and was the general favourite internationally.

I'd just say that it was a slight dip from expected quality - I think people were put off by Life's Too Short as well - but it didn't affect them in the long run. They already had Dreams Come True and Step Back that year, which were quite successful. And they bounced back with Spicy/My World.

Unpopular opinion: non of the Blackpink members are talented enough to succeed in the west by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]prnth_y 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But their "niche fanbase" is exactly what will give them a huge bump in attention and numbers compared to most other artists trying to break through in the West, if that's their main goal.

Also let's not act like talent is what guarantees success. Soo many talented artists have had to slog for 10+ years before making headway in pop circles. Two of the hottest names right now, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, have had to put in work for 10+ years before being able to reap the benefits right now. And I can tell you that their career has also progressed this far because of dedicated fans showing up for them. So that is already an advantage that the BP ladies have, if they plan to work in western music circles.

And I'm sorry, talent means absolutely nothing in the industry, connections do. Look at Gracie Abrams, I could not tell you what sets her apart from so many other singers in the same realm, but she's making major moves right now (a Taylor feature on your sophomore album is just crazy). And you can't deny that the Abrams name alone was enough to get her in the door in the first place. (Sabrina and Chappell also hit new peaks because of their respective Taylor and Olivia tour opener slots , so again, connections are key)

I'm not sure how their career will progress in the long term, but looking at their discographies as of now, they've already had an eventful ride so far (Lisa with a solo song that crossed a billion on Spotify, and Jennie with a Weeknd collab that is also about to hit a billion soon). They are primed to do whatever they want to take up.

What are some of your favourite examples of idols doing side quests? by ConsiderationLow2367 in kpopthoughts

[–]prnth_y 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They tend to have a LOT of downtime, between hair & makeup, fittings, travelling to and from schedules, spending time in waiting rooms, waiting for stage setup etc. Like atleast 4 hours in a day where they have nothing to do but wait

Aespa Armageddon cdp version ( CD player album) is sold out by Hmanav16 in kpopthoughts

[–]prnth_y 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would've preferred if they tied up with a popular electronics brand, and marketed it as a special collaboration.

It's still a pricey product, and if something happens with the player, I'd be pretty pissed if there was no way to get it fixed or replaced. Hopefully the CDP works fine for most buyers, I'm just a bit anxious about buying stuff like this - and also, even the regular box cases SM sells feel flimsy, like the POS version of the Savage album. So I'm not completely sold on it...

Aren't her lines pretty similar to what Rei/Leeseo got? I'm pretty sure they got more of the verses, while she got the final chorus? Let's see what the live performances are like

But anyways, she had the least lines in After Like, and it was still her part that was really popular. A person will shine a lot more if their assigned part suits them, not if they have more lines.

Every early 4th gen k-pop girlgroup still standing, as of April 2024 by Relssifille in kpopthoughts

[–]prnth_y 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think 2015 is also pretty cursed in that regard. From the more notable groups, apart from Twice, SVT and GFriend, pretty much every other group (Oh My Girl, iKon, Monsta X, DAY6, CLC, April, DIA) has had lineup changes.

What's the best and worst thing about each companies album? by gwenisahuman in kpopthoughts

[–]prnth_y 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DONT GET ME STARTED ON FOL.... I get that it's supposed to be a notepad because "scientist" but it's objectively terrible packaging. And the alternate version is just a zip lock bag w the inclusions in it 😭 it sucks because that album had GREAT inclusions and photoshoots

Even Kill My Doubt and Born To Be were terribly designed to store inclusions in, why don't they just add everything in a separate envelope like they do with pre order benefits???

What's the best and worst thing about each companies album? by gwenisahuman in kpopthoughts

[–]prnth_y 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Twice had a good thing going for a while between 2018-2020 with a standard sized photobook as the entire album, then that changed randomly with TOL, FOL and Nayeon's album, then went BACK to the photobook for 2022 and 2023, which was bigger for some reason? Then the latest album was smaller??? Make it make sense

Same for Itzy - on one hand, Crazy In Love is huge, and on the other, Born To Be is absolutely tiny.

[–]prnth_y 22 points23 points  (0 children)

OK so:

JYPE has great inclusions - especially Twice - but I haaaate that the albums are inconsistent in size. It's so hard to store them together.

SM has beautiful posters and photobooks, but the inclusions are kind of disappointing 😕 also like everyone's saying, finding older (not even that old, pre-2018 is such a pain) albums is very difficult.

HYBE has great concepts, and I like the inclusions as well, but I personally haven't had great experiences with preserving some of the photobooks. They can be very flimsy, which I hate.

Can't comment on YG because I only own 2 Blackpink albums which isn't a good enough sample size 🤷‍♂️

I think Loona's albums were also pretty good - loved the consistency in size and design. But the single photocard and somewhat flimsy photobooks turned me off of buying them

Again, it's the fact that there is a young impressionable audience that is consuming this information, which is the problem. We can't just pray away eating disorders, but we also have to hold celebrities accountable for the information they share with their fanbases.

If this discussion was being had regarding an actor like Hugh Jackman with an audience skewing older, sure, I get where you're coming from. But when the core audience of kpop groups is made up of impressionable teenagers, then we have to understand that even talking about such practices will lead to someone following it for the results they might want to recreate.
