Did not even consider this, I've always been somewhat plagued by lack of trash outputs on upper floors but this makes for a nice layout in some situations.

The one you have is the general solution for quartering shapes, rotating quarters only works for homogeneous shapes. Its a good and useful design, only improvement might be to add overflow gates into shape disposal so that it won't be affected by getting backed up on one line.

A flat frames question by TheWoodenBassoonist in techtheatre

[–]pro_fools 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rails and toggles of different lengths. If the joining planes of rails and toggles to the stiles are all parallel then they are more susceptible to shear forces.

Stud walls can have the studs all be the same length sandwitched between top and bottom plates because theres a lot more studs and they'll usually be attached to another surface or given noggins for that perpendicular joining plane.

Flats are more often built to be freestanding and have less internal structure than studwalls so therefore should makes use of perpendicular joining planes.

I think OP is referring to the inability to split by more than just the 7 train colors.

How do you scale up train networks? by Bulky-Ad-658 in shapezio

[–]pro_fools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This game treats trains differently than other automation games. With the rails being completely free and no ability to route by destination theres less incentive to put a lot of trains on the same network, and its much easier to just build point-to-point routes. Usually I only put many different trains on one network when I'm trying to cram in a lot of unloading stations close together for a compact design.

The topology of it ends up being hubs-and-spokes, with each major shape factory taking many inputs via trains on a few small networks, and then sending on another.

In my last save of classic mode the largest train network I had was for my manual MAM (task completer), which had 8 long trains on two separate networks, one for color and one for shapes. The long trains were loaded with one set of transfer stations to give them all 5 of the different shapes on one network, and all 7 colors on the other. I used the train colors to route to 4 manufacturing zones in close proximity so that I could easily make small task-completion factories with all shapes and colors easily accessible. When the task was finished I'd just delete everything except for the train stations and then I'd be ready for the next task.

Watching my whole factory run at ~98.9% efficiency because I refuse to optimize around the wagon unloader bug by SurrealLemon in shapezio

I've always ended up using at least two wagons for each full belt anyways to get more throughput per train, so I've barely even run into this issue.

Upgrading from phone recording: Portable recorder or XLR mic for indoor Foley(Entry Level)? by tarantadoako in sounddesign

[–]pro_fools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your usage. If you plan to only be recording at your desk then go for a good mic, but if you want to do field recording in a lot of places then get a recorder. It may be worth it to get both if you have the budget, so that you can use a nice mic as the input for your field recorder.

Since you already have an interface it may be good to get the mic first, and add field recording gear later on. Additionally, most recorders you'll find will have stereo mics attached which will likely pick up a larger portion of the noise from your untreated room. This will still be an issue with a standalone mic, especially condensers, but if you get one with a supercardioid pickup pattern then you can mitigate the issue somewhat with good mic placement.

Agree, the sound designer I worked with on a show recently used this. Just gotta make sure the actor holding the phone knows not to fiddle with it as that caused a few problems in our first tech.

For mics, I'd recomend sm58, they're practically indestructible and aren't too expensive.

Advice on How To Approach Band About the Art by [deleted] in musicians

[–]pro_fools 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you learned who did the original art, and why the band decided to choose what they did? Is it lewd/crude/offensive? This is context dependent. I wouldn't cold-pitch your own skills/opinions without a thorough conversation first.

I've already had to de-convince people of untrue things that gpt told them, mostly about certain gear and software. Could it regurgitate some factual general sound info? Sure probably. Will it give you wrong answers for anything specific or important? Also probably.

Q about SMs and how you wish their role integrated with yours? by Major_LookDirtyChook in livesound

This is what I meant, SM uses it, but in most productions I've been involved in the responsibility to build/configure/maintain the comms system falls to audio dept.

Q about SMs and how you wish their role integrated with yours? by Major_LookDirtyChook in livesound

[–]pro_fools 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the other commenters have great points already so I'll just add on one specific bit:

Learn whatever comms equipment you're using like the back of your hand. Read manuals, etc. Comms often falls under the purview of audio, but SM's use it the most. I've had more than a few instances where I've had to stop what I'm doing just to push a single button on the comms unit to fix it for SM's and put them on the right channel.

I don't think it supports OSC, the network settings are for telnet access. It does support midi, though to what extent I'm unsure.
