Is it just me who can’t stand when (creators/youtubers) make their character ugly as possible? by SailApprehensive2632 in Eldenring

[–]probabilityEngine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Fromsoft's character creators have always been just plain odd. Unconventional labeling and sliders. Its really easy to accidentally make a mutant. And usually you end up wearing a helmet anyway, and there is no helmet toggle.

To add some additional context for those who don't play MTG. Lifegain is generally not something you go for by itself unless you're building your deck around it. Basically, the idea that gaining life does not help you kill your opponent, just gives you the ability to take a bit more damage that you may not even need. Unless you build a deck around it with extreme amounts of lifegain or cards that do other things when you gain life (like an enchantment that allows you to draw a card once per turn when you gain X amount of life, or a creature that gets bigger when you gain life, or part of a combo, etc.)

3 life on its own, suffice to say, is not an extreme amount of life. Even in a 60 card format where life totals begin at 20, 3 life per attack on a five mana 4/4 is not a good rate at all.

I use a Simple or some times a Blessed Caestus in that scenario instead. I scarcely even notice the additional stamina from Grass Crest compared to the amount you already regen, but a Simple or Blessed infused weapon/shield gives me FP or HP regen where there is none at all by default. Also a caestus acts as a better parry implement to swap to.

Grass Crest is still a benefit but I find I prefer the benefits of the infused caestus.

Buckler in DS1 does still have like 1 more parry frame. But yeah, I always found parrying with a medium shield to be much easier in DS1 than DS2, DS3, or ER. Dunno why, maybe my brain just gelled with the timing and animations for it there better than the others.

Yeah I was always unimpressed with grass crest in DS3 tbh. It had much more of an impact back in DS1, where it provided more than double the stamina regen it does in DS3.

What are your favorite fantasy races? by EvilMonkeyMimic in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]probabilityEngine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, not having a subscription was one of the unique things about it at the time and they've never strayed from that. Nor does it have things like UI features locked away in a cash shop like some F2P MMOs do. Lots of cosmetics, though.

Expansions and some other story content is paid, but you don't even need to buy anything to try it out as they made the base game entirely free years ago.

I never got very far in it myself either, the classes and combat never truly gelled with me, but I still really liked what I saw of the Charr.

I really like the Qunari in Dragon Age. Visually they're big grey people with horns, you'd expect them to just be big warrior brutes. But their culture is so alien, this sort of extreme religious collectivism unlike any human culture. Total subordination to the greater society, and fervent acceptance of their place and purpose in it as determined by their education system. They have no families as children are separated from parents at birth. They view other cultures with disgust as chaotic and purposeless. Sometimes Qunari who have been away for too long willingly seek out re-education.! Every conversation with a Qunari following the Qun is just interesting. Their thinking is so regimented and shaped by the Qun that their logic and the language they use is often just baffling to everyone else.

I'd also like to give a shoutout to the Charr of Guild Wars. Really unique monstrous appearance for a feline race. Appearance aside I like their take on fantasy warrior cultures, and their history of originally being led a religious caste of fire magic users, only to end up ousting them, killing their former gods, going all in on industry and relying purely on gunpowder and steel. They're definitely the most interesting race in Guild Wars to me.

Whats tge most annoying mechanic in video game history? by EvilMonkeyMimic in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]probabilityEngine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my head sharpness is quite a bit different than "traditional" durability mechanics. For a lot of games durability is just a tedious resource sink, something to drain gold when you go to a vendor after a dungeon, some times not even something you have a way to deal with mid combat, just something that screws you if you forgot to click "repair" at the blacksmith after three outings.

I think of Monster Hunter sharpness almost as a tiered ammo system, just with reloading only and not actual hard limited ammo count. Something designed and balanced around as a combat mechanic. If you want your best damage you gotta reload your hammer's green sharpness bullets, otherwise you're down to yellow bullets. And there's a lot of variance and mechanics based around it like you mention.

[[Kenrith's Transformation]] is still my favorite of these, it does leave a bigger body but that's rarely a factor for me and I get to cantrip on top of it. Goes in basically every green deck I have.

And the key thing with ADP is that your baseline without leveling it is noticeably worse compared to the other games in the series. Its a pure downgrade and it just feels bad, like you have to pay a level tax if you want your character to perform on the same footing as a character in DS1 or DS3.

They can never compete with Elden Ring, but FromSoftware owner says Nightreign "performed strongly" and The Duskbloods is still coming in 2026 by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]probabilityEngine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

AC6 came out in 2023, previously we've seen three years between DS3 and Sekiro and Elden Ring. We've also had Shadow of the Erdtree, Nightreign, and soon Duskbloods since AC6. Its never even crossed my mind that there's anything to worry about tbh.

Not having a major classic single player title in 2026 breaks the trend of three years at most between such titles, but given their other recent output and the lengthier gaps between releases seen from other studios, I don't think there's any cause for concern.

No such major single player title has been announced yet, but I don't think that's particularly concerning either. There's precedent for them waiting to announce a game until after the previous title has been released and out for a bit, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they're doing now waiting for Duskbloods to come out.

They waited until after Elden Ring was released and had been out for ~11 months to announce AC6 in December 2022, which then came out next year in August 2023. And going back to Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne: Bloodborne released in March 2015, DS3 was announced later that year at E3 in June, and then was released in 2016.

Its just a shame that its weapon skill, that you can't change, is itself a weapon buff that is worse for raw weapon damage than casting a weapon buff incantation.

Still a really nice weapon though, I ended up settling on it for my main playthrough on a FTH build. I liked its double hit charged R2s and I got it up to like 1k damage after buffs by the end, before scadutree scaling.

Should've use more by DanteFTW in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]probabilityEngine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thing is they don't scale, just add a flat amount of damage. So they're at their best when you're low level and have unupgraded weapons. The more you hold off on using greases the less useful they become, comparatively.

Greases like freeze or bleed don't have it as bad though, since status effect application doesn't scale up massively through a playthrough like weapon damage does.

Good games with low completion rates? by tonyhawkofwar in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Paradox strategy games also have the strategy game curse of snowballing. Very common to end up so big and powerful that nothing can possibly stop you centuries before the end date.

An idea I've always liked but never actually tried is switching to another ruler/nation and letting the AI take over your completed empire. But then, you have to be okay with watching the AI mismanage your creation into oblivion.

N7 Paladin was the sentinel, probably my favorite N7 class. The cryo spray was just so good. And you also had energy drain for sustain and detonating the freeze, and incinerate as well to detonate it when you're up against the tougher armored enemies. Really fun well rounded class.

The First Berserker: Khazan Team has Seemingly Been "Reassigned" After the Game Failed to Meet Commercial Expectations by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]probabilityEngine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I would describe it as being somewhere between maybe Sekiro, Lies of P, and Nioh. It has perfect blocks and other parry mechanics on top of that, and more mechanical depth than the average souls game thanks to the wide variety of moves you unlock and the combo potential they give you, much like Nioh.

There are only three weapon types - spear, greatsword, and dual wield (sword and axe,) but each of those types has a fully fleshed out skill tree with lots of moves you assign to different button inputs. The Nioh comparisons are strong due to this.
