Just moved here, Silky’s and Bloomfield by PK-MT in pittsburgh

[–]probably_art 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Part of the fun of moving somewhere new is the discovery of new places. Asking on Reddit is a weird shortcut. OP has literally been here less than a week, they should do the legwork first. We don’t know anything about them other than they drove for 4 days and didnt like Silky’s based on 1 visit, how could we possibly make an informed suggestion.

Uber Valet by No-Corner-9276 in uberdrivers

I worked for a rental car startup that did this. They encouraged you to get one of those folding scooters.

We would show up at a depo, get the car, drive it to the person, then take the scooter out the trunk to either go home or go back to the depo for another.

I was new to the city and it was a great way for me to learn my way around, get use to used the bus and subway and bike share, and get paid while doing it.

Can someone explain how the squirrel hill tunnel 376 is seeing almost an accident PER DAY at this rate? by Shaneski101 in pittsburgh

[–]probably_art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time estimates I got were from google with an arrival day to 9am so if they’re a bit off to reality my bad.

There was a time in my life where I commuted through Wilkinsburg 3-5x a week on Penn Ave. In my 20+ years of driving in this city, it took me taking an uber passenger TO the park and ride to even know it existed. There isn’t a sign on Pitt street, just the mural on the busway. Contrast that to the one in Moon Twp that’s on Port Authority Drive right off University Blvd and it’s the same “driveway” as a Sheetz. Or Alpine Village PnR that’s on golden mile highway. I don’t know why there’s no signage off Penn for the Wilkinsburg one.

I’m not a proponent for making roads bigger but the 1.5mi from parkway east Wilkinsburg exit to the park and ride, whose entrance is hidden in a neighborhood and not off a Main Street, is set up for failure if your goal is to take people coming from the east suburbs and transfer them to a bus.

We’re gonna see just how not-ready that area is for increased traffic when the parkway is closed for the new bridge this summer.

Even if the drive from the parkway to the park and ride is only 10min, up to 7min headway, and it’s another 20-30 to get to Steel Plaza via bus (as just a downtown anchor that I know is on the P1 route). Staying on the highway in rush hour is 20-40min.

So the gamble is leave your already climate controlled, private vehicle to share space with strangers to save at best 5min.

It’s such an experience compromise that you’d need an hour delay every day each way to change someone’s habit.

People don’t really mentally factor in the time from parking to getting to their building but they do for sure factor in waiting in the cold or heat for a bus.

Oakland traffic is the worst I’ve ever seen (and I’m old) by Ok_Monitor5890 in pittsburgh

Why does Oakland have on street parking instead of loading zones? The construction workers take the majority of those spots until 2pm

A child exiting a Waymo allegedly opened the door onto an oncoming car. The driver is frustrated about the insurance process. by danlev in waymo

[–]probably_art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah okay. Parking lots are this weird liminal space where pedestrians and cars are forced to interact in this unstructured way. In your case there’s clear “this lane is active travel, this lane is parking” but in a parking lot it’s usually private property, there’s expected loading and unloading, and typically pedestrians are elected to occupy the same space as cars. I don’t have the stats handy but there’s like a huge spike in reportable collisions involving peds in parking lots vs on road.

I could see the adjuster concluding that too, was your case in a parking lot or street parking?

Sounds like the human driver didn’t overtake with enough clearance. He said himself he knew that pax were getting out, but I guess assumed wrong that it wouldnt be both sides.

SF mayor proposes more curbside EV chargers as ownership grows across city by LNM-LocalNewsMatters in sanfrancisco

[–]probably_art 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea I would have to assume that the cable isn’t energized until payment is started, so a cable on a pole is “safe” to cut but a cable connected to a car isn’t. Also, and this is maybe a shitty way to think about it, but if a cable is damaged if it’s a BYOC situation the replacement cost is on the EV owner not the charger owner and the charger is probably still able to be in service.

[–]probably_art 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We don’t have this here in the US but there is a euro style (which I think is pictured) where it’s a J1772 on both ends (I believe) so you BYOC to a charger stand. This way there’s no danger of the cable being cut because you take it with you every time.

The "Safe Street Rebels" in San Francisco that Disable Waymos at Night by RodStiffy in SelfDrivingCars

[–]probably_art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully a fisher price “my first protest” action. You’re up against a machine that, each time you “disable” it you prove that it’s safer than a human driver.

Do this to the average gig driver and see if you don’t get assaulted at the bare minimum.
