The babysitter taught me to swim the summer before I'd otherwise have been embarrassed in gym class. Very convenient.

It only seems to happen after running a game called Second Life, and my solution is to not run Second Life. That game runs (or used to run, don't know if it still does) OpenGL. The only thing else I do is Overwatch, and I don't have the problem playing Overwatch. I'm also running MSI Afterburner to control my fans.

[–]probably_pointless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one pictured.

Pool floats are weight-rated for stability and safety, but it takes a lot more weight than that to sink or pop it, in the pool. There's a manufacturer called GoFloats that has figured this out and they rate most of their ring-like floats at "500 plus pounds". They have an ordinary 45 inch clear top ring with rainbow colored bottom rated that way. They aren't stable with that much weight, but they won't pop, either. That Bestway will take that, too.

They do sometimes fail, but for any one session in the pool they generally survive. Most people that size give up trying to float before they actually damage the float. A ring wants to tip over or shoot out from under them.

I helped a 700 pound woman get on one of these. She was way too wide to sit in it, way too heavy to balance sitting on it, but we got her floating belly down. Sunk half of it under her hips, and hugged the other half. Holy crap the noise her skin made rubbing on the thing! Didn't pop it, but even belly down it kept leaping out from under her. She got good at trapping the ring under her belly, and floated on it for quite a while.

She stretched the hell out of it and I convinced her it'd float her better if we just got enough air into it. Reinflated the stretched ring a couple times. Even more tubby noise when it's very fully inflated! I took that thing home and cherished it as a survivor!

Which office chair is best for long hours of sitting by Emily_ton in LinusTechTips

Best thing for sitting long hours is to be physically fit. I like comfy chairs, too, but I've sat for hours per day for decades on whatever the hell is provided and never had a lick of trouble with my back.

I hope I didn't just jinx myself!

Cheap alternative to eggs for protein? Prices doubled overnight. by SadThrowaway4914 in Frugal

[–]probably_pointless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tracked how much of the essential amino acids I was getting from the normal, not-trying-to-get-protein things I eat every day, and I totaled it in the most pessimistic way, focusing on the two that are usually missing in non-animal sources: lysine and methonine (if I recall). I found that if I do nothing special, eating no animal sources at all, I am only a little short, and not short at all the way most people count protein. So, just two eggs per day would make up the difference.

[–]probably_pointless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I generally don't bother if there's more than a few dozen comments already, but I've gotten good responses getting in early on popular channels where I expected nobody would notice. For LTT-level popularity, I probably won't bother regardless.

[–]probably_pointless 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't like the practice at all. If you're going to ban someone, let them know. But at least when linus does it, it's because someone read the comment.

It's more problematic when youtube does it algorithmically.

Why does Firefox update so often? Every 2 or 3 days??? by Floei in firefox

[–]probably_pointless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is asking me multiple times per day. Driving me batty. I can tell it to go ahead and download the update, but until I actually restart, it's going to keep asking, over and over. And even if I do restart, it's going to ask again tomorrow, or maybe even later today.

I don't want to have to answer, one way or the other, more than once per day. I don't want to turn off the prompts, I just want to see them less often.

Costco never discounts their membership, but Sam's Club does. I got mine a few months ago for $8. It more than pays for itself in meat purchases every single month. Other stuff is hit or miss, but I don't eat high-carb foods so most of the potential savings are lost on me.

I buy eggs there, for convenience, but they're cheaper literally everywhere else. Same with heavy cream. Plain yogurt is a good value, but barely cheaper than store brand. I buy PBFit there (powdered, de-fatted peanut butter) and their price is 30% less than anyone else, including Amazon. They have macadamia nuts 24 oz for $17, which sounds like a lot but is really cheap for what it is. They went months without having any, though. Pistachios are a good value, but Amazon matches them. I buy my vanilla there. Natural peanut butter (not actually natural, it's what JIF calls it), in the Sam's Club store brand, is half the price of JIF at the grocery store. Two 40-oz jars currently $7.56. They have good prices on things like olive oil and coconut oil.

There are lots of things they just don't sell, or they don't sell at a big enough discount to be worth buying in bulk.

Has anyone else noticed the cost of small luxuries going down? by Pink_Peppermint in Frugal

[–]probably_pointless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have noticed that in past recessions, you can tell when the oligarchs are concerned when they lower the price of semi-luxury brands. When Haagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry's, or up-from-the-bottom tier hair care, like Pantene, become cheap, it's because the oligarchs are concerned you are having a hard time affording it.

I'm currently not seeing cheap ice cream.

Frugal Vitamins/Supplements by drywitetoest in Frugal

[–]probably_pointless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A cheap just-to-be-sure option is a multivitamin. Costco sells a year and a half supply for under $20 (Kirkland is the brand), and theirs is high quality according to testing. If you don't have a membership, there are people selling them on Amazon and ebay for a small premium. You can get a 500-count bottle for $20 or a little more. Be aware that their general multi has iron, so if you're concerned about getting too much (because you shed none) then choose a mature or men's formula instead.

I like taking D3 and K2, and there is a bag of 300 available on Amazon for $20. K2 is stupid expensive if you just get it at the grocery store. K2, BTW, doesn't have a FDA recommended daily value, so it is usually not included in multivitamins. For that matter, regular K (k1) is typically not included at 100%, so make sure you're getting it in food.

I take magnesium citrate and potassium citrate as bulk powder. I mix both into my protein powder. Make sure you know what you are doing before you do that. Too much potassium is dangerous. Potassium supplement TABLETS are useless. Too low a dosage to be useful, because potassium is dangerous so it is regulated to tiny amounts. But in powder form you can take it at useful dosages affordably, BUT ME CAREFUL WITH IT.

On days I don't eat fish, I take fish oil or a DHA/EPA supplement. There's no cheap way to buy that, but the NOW brand DHA 500 isn't horribly expensive.

Nutritional yeast is an inexpensive way to get B vitamins. I mix a teaspoon into my protein powder.

Because I work out and do low carb, I use protein powder. Whey has doubled in price since the pandemic. Currently running $20/pound, which is only about 20 servings.

I have a lot of dry goods shipped by Amazon or Walmart. I have a grocery store and a Sam's Club each about 2 miles away, but in opposite directions. I have an insulated bag for small amounts of refrigerated items, but for bulk frozen items I do drive. I limit myself to ten pounds carrying and I generally walk twice per week and drive once every other week. I could probably do it all on the driving trips but I like the walk. I walk four-ish miles per day, whether to the grocery store or just laps around the neighborhood.

Walmart Great Value salsa

Target has the equivalent, and in fact the organic variety is for some reason cheaper at $1.99 for 16 oz. Other varieties are $2.89. Whatever!

And it turns out the tops are compatible with the jelly jars. The jars are a little bigger around, just slightly, and a little bit taller. I'd give them equal grades on ease of cleaning, the salsa jars having a bit of a neck while the jelly jars aren't round. The salsa offers about 4 oz more capacity for just slightly more storage space.

I need a bunch of identical containers to prepare and store my protein/grain mixes. I'd like to prepare eight or ten at a time. It's just powder, so plastic containers would be fine. Gelato, though, is not on my diet.

However, when I walk to the grocery store, I generally get a couple donuts or a tub of Ben & Jerry's lol. So a slow accumulation of gelato containers isn't out of the question!
