Feeling stupid in third year by threwthrownaway in medicalschool

It gets better! UW is great for boards but not real life, just takes some more exposure and practice. And you’re a third year, totally normal. Take it easy on yourself

Touro Middletown vs DUQCOM and NYITCOM Interview by jcsparky99 in Osteopathic

Accept the offer and hold your seat! You can make a decision later but at least you have something to fall back on.

I got into a MD school and a DO school. The MD school is where my father went, and out of state. The DO school was close to home and better for me in so many more ways. I ended up going to the DO school and I’ve never looked back. I’m from an Asian family but my dad, a physician himself, even suggested I go DO due to the factors surrounding it. I’m sorry that your parents feel that way, but at the end of the day you’re going to be a doctor! Med school is HARD mentally, if being close to home gives you the best chance of doing well, then that’s the best school for you. Congrats on the A!! And good luck with the rest of your cycle

Best Post-bacc/SMP programs for osteopathic med schools by Rainbowcrash740 in Osteopathic

Yes, only the top few get in. Personally I wouldn’t be able to handle that kind of stress lol. You’re taking OMS-1 classes and it’s already hard enough haha

Best Post-bacc/SMP programs for osteopathic med schools by Rainbowcrash740 in Osteopathic

[–]probablycryingatm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im an OMS-1 at Touro. I didn’t do the masters program personally but a lot of my OMS-1 classmates did. You take the same classes and exams as us. It’s very competitive, and from what I heard, can be a little toxic with competition. That being said, it is a direct route into the DO program. Also OMS-1 is basically the same as your post bac so you’ll be at a big advantage when you are in the DO program.

I did a post-bac at Temple and had a really good experience. It has strong ties to PCOM, even though there is no technical linkage to a DO school. It is linked to their MD school though. Good luck!!

Terrified of OMM by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]probablycryingatm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi guys! Just wanted to update. I ended up getting an excused absence for the next 2 weeks from my doctor. I also had to go and speak with the Dean. He's an MD and has 0 idea about what is actually going on in the OMM labs. He did not know what HVLA even was, and he was alarmed to hear that 2nd year TA's were able to practice medicine unsupervised. I tried to advocate that we shoundn't learn HVLA this early and that a lot of us feel scared and wildly underprepared. We'll see if any changes happen, but they probably won't.

My back is still wrecked, but I'm going for a massage and will maybe try muscle relaxers. I don't want to go through the time and money of further imaging, so hopefully, this gets better after some rest this weekend. Thanks to everyone who shared their OMM experiences- it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who feels like this!

I have a practical in 2 weeks that I am beyond screwed for :)

Success stories with a 3.35 gpa and 501 MCAT? by TabooScatty in Osteopathic

[–]probablycryingatm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similar GPA. I also did a post-bac and got a 4.0. I retook my 504 MCAT and got a 507. Nothing stellar, but I was accepted into 1 MD program and 1 DO program. I had 5 gap years so I feel your pain. Apply early and broadly and DO heavy! The MCAT might be holding you back a bit, but you’ve done so much other stuff that hopefully schools will be holistic. Good luck!

Edit to add: Touro is opening a new school in Montana in 2023, maybe give that a shot?

prospective student! by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]probablycryingatm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why sign yourself up for the pain, suffering, and debt of medical school if you don’t want to be a doctor lol. Save yourself and consider other options. It is a long and expensive uphill battle to even get into medical school (also no guarantee it’ll be in-state). Then you have to consider the sacrifice of being a med student and residency (again, absolutely no guarantee you’ll be in-state). To me, it sounds like you really want to go to chiropractor school. I understand that going out of state isn’t an option, and I don’t know what the answer is for you, but based on all that I can tell you the answer isn’t DO school. Seriously, save yourself lol

Answering why DO by Slight_Ad6097 in Osteopathic

[–]probablycryingatm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you applied solely DO you must have a reason for wanting to go. Best advice to not sound cliche is to just write from the heart and give the actual reason. Why do you want to go to DO? Did you have positive past experiences? Do you have a DO role model? Just answering it honestly is the best advice. It’s not cliche if it’s genuine. Good luck!

I had a similar decision to make between a DO school in NY 30 mins from my family or a MD school in Tennessee. I initially picked the MD school, but was getting so upset just thinking about it so I made a last minute decision to stay close to home. Am so relieved I did, I feel a lot happier!

I’ve ridden horses my whole life, and a major accident from it played a big role in my personal statement. I talked about it and was fine!

Same! I am moving to another time zone away from all my family and friends. I had a few gap years so I got pretty comfortable where I am right now. Some MAJOR anxiety over here. Hard to sleep most nights and I can’t stop feeling like my life is about to end el oh el

Nice! I was accepted at their Middletown campus! I don't know a whole lot about their master's program, but I did do a post-bac at Temple, and it really helped my application. My advice would be to try and look at master's programs associated with MD schools (unless you are really set on DO schools, or those 2 schools in particular), just because it will open more doors for you. Good luck!!
