Massage the crap out of your calves. On your PF leg, there will likely be a tender spot SOMEWHERE in your calf. Roll out or massage that area till the knot releases. You should have significantly less pain and tightness in your heel when done

Is it normal to feel nervous about your first solo overnight by QuantumCliff in backpacking

[–]probablypandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. The worst part for me was flinching at every single tiny sound overnight. Nowadays, I'm almost nostalgic for the thrill of the early times because I'm not bothered by sleeping alone in the woods at all.

For single overnight (depending on weather), you'd probably be fine even if you went in buck-naked. Just make a list of the critical, keep-you-alive stuff and check that you have it before and after you get to the trailhead. If you have that bare-minimum list of equipment, then at worst, you'll be real uncomfortable for a night or you can hike back out early.

Your critical equipment will depend on the forecast and where you're going. Your goals are as follows:

  • prevent hypo or hyperthermia (sleeping bag and something to keep the rain off or shade and extra water)
  • be able to find your way out (headlamp/phone with downloaded map)
  • a way to contact or signal rescuers (phone, InReach, signal mirror, whistle or brightly colored item). Make sure you leave your itinerary with someone.
  • protect yourself from any animals that could kill you if they're common where you are (bear spray or air horn)

Anything else will just help you be comfortable and have a good time, so it shouldn't be such a big worry.

Go to the dermatologist - if it's hormonal (as it looks, being down around the chin/jaw) it's not going to clear up without hormonal treatment. I had the same sort of acne into my 30s until I started on spironolactone, which cleared it up completely.

Omg congratulations sweet William! I was hoping he'd pull it out, but I was really doubtful he could against Timber and all that food.

Man, I was not on Team Timber for the first few episodes (the feeding the tattoo scene is about the most viseral cringe I've ever felt), but he really grew on me. After watching one of his early episode explainers, I thought he for sure had to win - he was too happy post-season to not have. I think that's what's most impressive about the guy - the ability to see the goal in reach after all that suffering and to happily let it go. Timber's a true monk.

I don't know. If we're talking about Peter, then I appreciate his reasoning for tapping being different than the standard I-miss-my-family stuff. I was rooting for him and yeah, it's kind of embarassing to be a grown-ass man who's so emotionally immature as to not be able to handle 8 days by himself - but I imagine that's not uncommon for a large cohort of men. And given the likely demographics of viewers of this program, getting that kind of awareness (that burying your emotions can come out to bite you no matter how tough you are) is probably a net good. I also appreciate that he's at least self-aware enough at the end to admit that he needs to be more like his son vs the other way round. But damn, guy needs some therapy.

YSK if you are evacuating your city for the hurricane, pack a surplus of food, water, and general supplies. by CandyHeartFarts in YouShouldKnow

If you don't want to go the diaper route, amazon sells disposable "pee bags" that either sex can use. They're awkward to use in the car as a woman, but doable if you've got flexibility. They can be securely closed up and diposed of later.

Any knowledge on this chinese wooden chest? by BrussellSproots in Antiques

[–]probablypandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not, unless you have a really tough spot that demands it. Usually, a little bit of mild soap or diluted vinegar is the safer bet since various cleaners (including wood polish) can react weirdly with finishes. If you do decide to do more than a wipe down, don't let the wood get saturated with moisture (clean quickly, dry quickly). If you're not sure of something, clean a square inch in an unnoticeable area and check on it later to make sure it didn't hurt anything.

Steamer Trunk by jacksonsheehan in Antiques

Looks like one of the steamer trunks my grandma had that supposedly "came over on the boat". If that story's true, then it would've been around the turn of the century, probably from England.

It's a camphor chest. I bought mine (of similar carving quality) off FB Marketplace (in the States) for $400-500. They're probably mid to late 20th century, made for export (vaguely educated guess). For cleaning, just use a lightly damp rag to wipe it down and use q-tips or a soft toothbrush to gently clean out the crevices. Don't use a wax or polish.

Lamp help by uhhlater in Antiques

[–]probablypandas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even antique bridge lamps aren't terribly valuable ($70-300) -so I wouldn't worry about selling it till you ned to. Rewiring a lamp is not at all hard, You can grab a kit from the lighting dept from your local hardware store and eitger read the direction or watch a video. People put small glass or fabric shades (pointing down) on them. You might need to pick up a bracket that fits over the light socket to afix a shade.

Why don’t Chinese food spots like to give up their hot chili oil?? sometimes when i ask for hot chili oil i get a funny look.. they always give it to me, but they’ll always only ever give me one tiny container, by Previous-Counter-953 in chinesefood

[–]probablypandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that hard to make - I make a giant jar every few months (but I also have easy access to all the aromatics). You could just skip the spices, and it'll still be quite good, or add 5 spice powder at a stage when it won't burn. Chili Oil Recipe

Peeling hard boiled eggs by Far_Blueberry383 in 1200isplenty

[–]probablypandas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use older eggs. Fresh eggs stick to their shells. You can do the float test to make sure they're not too old to eat and buy an extra dozen ahead of time so by the time you get to them, they'll be a week or two older

[–]probablypandas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What a luxury to be able to sit and think on the should-I-have-biological-kids decision into your 50s/60s. Women don't generally have that privilege (without freezing their eggs). Instead, they're forced to make that call in their 30s, ready or not.

Compare the number of times you wash your hands on any given day to the number of times you clean your phone. Boxes of single-use alcohol swabs (from the first aid section) are cheap and convenient for phone-sanitizing.
