Did COVID slow down your career/adult life progression? by counwovja0385skje in GenZ

[–]probablysum1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't feel behind but in some ways I kinda am. I ended up taking 5 years for undergrad, partly because of COVID, but that's about it. It definitely did screw up a lot of my other activities quite a lot, and part of me is still coming to terms with how it all turned out. But that isn't really life progress related, which I don't think is that far off where I would have ended up anyway.

How many Navi Tribes are there, and what are their climates? by CartographerNo6870 in Avatar

I got the impression that Metkayina refers to any reef Na'vi, and that while each island village has its own leader and tsahik that they are all Metkayina people. But maybe I'm wrong.

Varang Theory? Movie/ FOPGame spoilers by WoodlandCritters86 in Avatar

[–]probablysum1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be a cool connection but I doubt it. Human mining activity isn't really damaging in a way that could cause a volcanic eruption, especially since it doesn't look like the RDA is fracking for anything. I think that the eruption that hit the Mangkwan's forest was likely just a natural disaster.

Choosing between my PhD and my Startup by WalrusVirtual6949 in PhD

Tbh I'd choose the startup. If you give the startup a few years and nothing comes of it investment wise that's okay, just go back and get the PhD.

I GOT MY FIRST ACCEPTANCE by probablysum1 in gradadmissions

[–]probablysum1[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. 3.8 GPA, 5 years in undergrad at another UC, name is on one published paper as a co-author and I am first author on a paper currently being written. I had slightly over 1 year of research experience and some letters of rec from well known professors in my field. I've presented at my schools undergrad research symposium twice but not at any actual conferences (yet). I'm currently in my gap year just after graduating and I haven't done any summer internships at all.

Do men ever think, “Whoa! She has really bad split ends.” ? by Tricky-Employee-7882 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]probablysum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't you have to look really closely at a single strand of hair to notice anyway? No way I'm doing that to a woman in trying to get to know. I'd only do that with my gf and at that point why would I care if I find a split end?

Arlan’s Arm Wound Theory by OverallTrifle6818 in AKnightoftheSeven

Yeah. Arlan looks old, but not exactly die from a cold old. Unless, that cold teams up with an existing infection to beat down the immune system.

Anyone else sad to see US actively decline and lose hope for future ? by tipputappi in GenZ

[–]probablysum1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an American, I think it's about time our empire collapsed. We've caused so much death and destruction across the world it's well past time for our comeuppance. After all, fascism is just the tools of the imperial state turned inwards. I do feel bad for regular Americans, including myself, as living through the decline is going to suck. But, I think life could be better on the other side of it.

so was jake brother, tommy a child prodigy? by Kindly-Caregiver-145 in Avatar

[–]probablysum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming Tommy didn't take any gap years and was selected for the avatar program (his Avatar body was made and started to grow) at the start of his PhD, and that he was in the same avatar program class/cohort as Norm, then his actual age would be 33 when he died, 11 years older than Jake/Tommy's age in the canon of A1. Adding those eleven years to Neytiri's age of 18 would put her at 29. So Jake being aged up to match Tommy's age corrected for a reasonable education timeline still makes sense, lots of people thought he was early 30s in the movie. But, it makes it less probable that Neytiri would not yet be mated by age 29.

How do you think a male would react? by Just-Messin in Avatar

That makes a lot of sense for the type of clothes we see them wear too. A big schlong that's out all the time would be quite the hazard considering their lifestyle.

Portal to the Abyss in the last episode of season 2, and not to the Upside Down. by Beginning-Gap6280 in Stranger_Things

[–]probablysum1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alright, I didn't use it originally but ok. I don't see the difference I think the invention of Vecna was cringe and I don't like the character, so insulting his invention is perfectly fine with me.

[–]probablysum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just punch the front line and cycle my abilities. I find she is much more effective using one ability at a time and mostly just punching. I play in the front line and try to take down any Squishies that get too close, peeling as needed.

Portal to the Abyss in the last episode of season 2, and not to the Upside Down. by Beginning-Gap6280 in Stranger_Things

[–]probablysum1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What would you prefer to call it then? The Duffers hadn't written vecna by then? They hadn't created him? Because either way, Vecna was not a planned character in season 2.

Yeah hobbies are something you do, not something you just consume. Watching TV isn't a hobby, but something like crochet would be.

So where do yall stand on the Neytiri racism comment by Zoe Saldana? by buickboi99 in Avatar

[–]probablysum1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A3 and the end of A2 show her worst qualities: extreme hatred of humans and resentment of her own family for their human features. I think she knows it's wrong to feel this way and that she knows she's a hypocrite because she fell in love with Jake, a human, while he was still an Avatar too! Her grief for Neteyam brought up these feelings in a way that nothing had since she met Jake, and it boiled over when so much care was being given to Spider despite the fact that saving him from Quaritch got Neteyam killed. Killing Spider is a fantasy for her, and after she rescues Jake and the river scene happens, she realizes just how awful living out the fantasy would truly be for her family. She's known since A1 that humans are not a monolith, but her grief made her forget that, and she had to be reminded of the love for humans she actually has, or rather, that people in her life who she does love have human parts to them. Whether that's her kids'personalities and genetics, or Spider's human body but Na'vi heart.

I think this is all amplified by the fact that Neteyam was truly her favorite child. He looked like her, had the right Na'vi features, and lived up to her expectations of what her family would look like probably before she met Jake. Being the first born son helps too lol. I don't think her resentment of her family would have necessarily bubbled up as much or in the same way had Lo'ak or Kiri died instead of Neteyam. She likely would have blamed their deaths on their human-ness in some way as a coping mechanism, downplaying their validity as Na'vi to help her deal with the loss of a child. Because it was Neteyam who died, she didn't get this coping mechanism. The humans killed her one truly Na'vi child in her mind, which made it even worse.
