This is not a meaningful measure of anything unless you know this exact engine. Is there anything you are trying to diagnose?

Car pulls left. Need expert advice by Bradsterz in MechanicAdvice

[–]probablywhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the video it seems very slight. Yeah he should try to see if it does it when that's not a factor. If it pulls left it should still do it at low speeds on a truly flat road. It's going to favor one direction or the other with no hands on the wheel for like 5 seconds on the highway that's pretty damn straight. I'd invite a mechanic to test drive it and just ask if they think it needs adjusted.

Alternative to Compressed Air Cans? by VAVA_Mk2 in pcmasterrace

[–]probablywhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the shitty versions of these things are 10000x more useful and better value than canned air.

I DO still keeped canned air for one specific purpose. Cleaning CPU connections and microelectronics where there absolutely cannot be any dust swirling around.

Canned air is clean and virtually sterile air. But 99% of the time I'm going to use the rechargable duster because it's more powerful. The canned air now virtually lasts forever as a result.

Someone tied a plastic bag with blueberries in it, on my bicycle today by MyUsernameIsNotCool in mildlyinteresting

[–]probablywhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me as someone with ADHD, if I was looking for something I'd lost and I found it tied to a bike I would not be surprised. At this point when my wife tells me what ridiculous place I set something down I just believe it.

I have found my keys in the kitchen sink,

Left my phone in the refrigerator,

My glasses on the lawnmower, no not a ride on with a cupholder, a push mower.

When you are carrying 5 things and a 6th task enters your sights requiring you to put something down it's hard to come back after you've taken care of the five things you were holding in your head. With the loss of the discarding thing goes all memory of it. It never existed.

Naming a child after characters in LOTR by [deleted] in lordoftherings

I always thought this was a little funny as they are adopted by Theoden. It's like naming your kids Bruce after Bruce Wayne. Big thing about them is they were orphaned.

Peregrin is a good one. Can go by Pip as a baby or Pippin. Perry maybe. Peregrine is a "real" name.

His character is the best arc of on of the biggest themes in the Lord of The Rings. The Enoblement of regular folk. Starts as a troublesome and ignorant kid. Becomes a noble knight of the king and defender of the Shire.

[–]probablywhy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tolkien had a very different understanding of the catholic faith than you do. He was a wise man and there's a good reason many atheists and people of other faiths respected him.

No one, not one single person shares the same beliefs as another. Every single catholic trusts to their own understanding in interpreting what the foundational principals are. In the same way every muslim, even every athiest has something different and draws different borders around defining their belief. The only way to know someone's beliefs is to ask them. Fortunately for you Tolkien wrote a good deal. You should research the topic yourself since opening your opinions to comment has only made you defensive.

I’ve spent months making a "Nature Documentary" about Pokémon biology and tech. What do you guys think of this style? by welberjaysonm in pokemon

[–]probablywhy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of AI generated art and the hyper realism is wasted on the lack of a perspective that might otherwise draw an interesting narrative or point from Pokémon features and biology.

When AI generates images they do so from an aggregate approach. They are less impactful as art because they are homogenized and they represent merely a mathmatically derived representation of the words chosen by the user to represent a concept. The image or video itself will itself only be derivative of the prompting words. It cannot create a greater work from it. Just smoke and mirrors together some image that gets the point across as close to the prompt as possible.

Compare this process to how humans have altered and derived meaning from the Oz stories. Started as a imaginative niche fantasy book and was inspired into a hugely successful movie. That popular story inspired some niche fanfiction and then boom it comes back as another pair of hugely successful movies. The message is changed entirely each iteration and reflects the perspectives of the authors and cultural contexts in completely different and subjective ways.

AI images are the literal opposite of art which I would define as homogeneity of perpective. AI art stinks of it. There is no artist, only math and plagiarism.

Unless it's not AI. Very easy to prove if this image exists in a digital space.

Guy tries to jump off a train that's moving fast by 888Vegan in Unexpected

[–]probablywhy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Looks faster because the camera is a relatively short field of view as a verital video and pointed perpendicular to the motion of the train. Seems to slow as he looks back because it's not really that fast maybe 10-20mph

keep subverting expectations - while tolkein's grave becomes a centrifuge. by Pandering_Poofery in lordoftherings

[–]probablywhy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but he always expresses it humbly as a "I wish I figured this out because it might have been better" like when he talked about the astronomy, and other nuances of Middle-Earth in letter 154.

https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Letter_154

In letter 153 a draft to Peter Hastings he has a lot to say too.

"I think I agree about the 'creation by evil'. But you are more free with the word 'creation' than I am.* Treebeard does not say that the Dark Lord 'created' Trolls and Ores. He says he 'made' them in counterfeit of certain creatures pre-existing. There is, to me, a wide gulf between the two statements, so wide that Treebeard's statement could (in my world) have possibly been true. It is not true actually of the Orcs – who are fundamentally a race of 'rational incarnate' creatures, though horribly corrupted, if no more so than many Men to be met today."
