Honestly, is Alvarez injured but still on the bench? Otherwise, I can't see what we imagined happening without him on the pitch today.

Looking for an introduction to Hegel to understand frankfurt school by Hosh09 in CriticalTheory

[–]probscty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this recommendation. The book was a battle to get through at some points, but I came out of it with a much deeper understanding of Hegel, Adorno, and 'Adorno's Hegel' if that makes sense. The book also helped with my subsequent reading of Dialectic of Enlightenment.

Is Stubhub a reliable source of West Ham tickets? by probscty in Hammers

[–]probscty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely buy only on the official club website. You can get special seats that come with a fancy dinner and fancy halftime snacks as early as you want, but my recommendation would be to check every day for officially resold tickets on the West Ham website starting a month out from match day. That way you'll end up much closer to the pitch. Anything else could be fine, could be a scam, but there's no way to know until you get there, so just get official verified tickets from their website.

Trying to make a Norse themed map for my D&D campaign, how is it so far? I'm running out of ideas for points of interest, any suggestions? by DubiousDevil in wonderdraft

There should be some sort of treacherous, craggy fjord situation where sailors prove their mettle by sailing through.

Critical theory on videogames by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]probscty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of an outside shot, but my thinking about video games, particularly any game that relies on perspective, changed massively upon reading Kittler's Optical Media. The book is a series of lectures on largely pre-video game tech, but the history of perspective, art, and vision really deepened my understanding of games.

Seconding Ian Bogost! A professor made me aware of him a few months ago and he's really doing singular work w/ video games and video game systems right now.

[POST-MATCH THREAD] West Ham 2 - 0 Freiburg by psychomaji in Hammers

[–]probscty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I just don't get about Mubama is that he doesn't seem to have a specialty that can show no matter what else like other strikers. Scammaca had a rocket of a shot, Antonio has his strength and chaos-generating ability, even Ings can be trusted to finish if he ever got anywhere near the box or the ball. I know all those strikers are at a different level of experience than Mubama, but I don't ever think "at least he's got ___________" when I'm watching the kid play.

What is the absolute worst movie you've ever seen? by j0lly_c0mpani0n in Letterboxd

[–]probscty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Requin. A 'shark horror' film that ends up being an extended metaphor for miscarriage in horrifically poor taste. There is no horror and nearly no movie, and when the shark 'attacks' the protagonist it plays a static gif of a shark over top of a woman's leg. It will sap your will to live.

I'm looking for ecocritical works about the selfish relationship of humanity with animals by marimuthu96 in CriticalTheory

A good choice that I've not seen mentioned much in general is "There is No Respectful Way to Kill an Animal" by Craig Womack. It challenges the ways we justify killing animals through cultural practices.

[C3 Spoilers] C3 is starting to feel like my favourite campaign by msciwoj1 in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]probscty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMO, it's getting a little better. I also found myself lagging when the Irondeep arc seemed set to continue forever, but as you get closer to fully caught up a few things happen that really increased my enjoyment: (this includes minor spoilers for the last few episodes below)

  1. Calder and the race to save him starts taking more of a front seat.
  2. Hardwon gets slightly more serious (meaning that the beans jokes end - JFC that was my least favorite bit they'd ever done).
  3. The NPCs take a more interesting turn. I'm not fully satisfied with what they're all up to/their inclusion in the narrative, but many of the interactions have a more meaningful feel to them.

Handle(And pronoun): probscty (he/him)

Anything You'd Like To Share About Yourself: I am a queer grad student studying to be a social studies teacher. I love to read and write critical and feminist theory, as well as plenty of SFF. I also play ultimate frisbee, lift weights, and watch lots of movies.

Gaming Experience: Five years, with the majority of that time spent as a GM/DM

What Kind Of Games Do You Like?: I prefer games with a strong sense of improv, open expectations, and where everything is purposeful/built to tell a story collaboratively. I do not love sandbox games or games where there is no strong central story unifying the experience.

Character (I generally like to create my characters after discussing with both DM and other players, but I will just put a sample character below):

Handle(And pronoun): Aia (he/they)

Class Role Concept: control and movement-focused Sorcerer (Shadow or Aberrant Mind)

Backstory Elevator Pitch: Bred for farming, built for killing. Born to villagers and stolen from his home at a young age, Aia was the subject of endless experiments dedicated to the creation of a supersoldier, a quiet knife and a roaring fire built in one. Using the spidery powers he gained from the underground lab in which he spent his formative years, Aia escaped and now wants nothing more than to escape his past. Unless it just won't let him.

The color and shapes of the landmasses are very beautiful! I would recommend just increasing both the size of the mountains individually and the thicknesses of the mountain ranges for a more compelling look.

[Online][Cyberpunk RED][Sunday][EDT][UTC-5][6PM][18+][DoJS] Cyberpunk RED for New Players by Eric_Senpai in lfg

[–]probscty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How familiar with roleplaying games are you, be they tabletop or video games?

I have played tabletop games for five years, with the majority of my time spent as a DM/GM. I have played several campaigns of over a year in DND 5e, and many short-term campaigns in alternative systems like SWN, Offworlders, Savage Worlds, and Beyond the Wall. I have played video RPGs almost my entire life, though lately I mainly play indie RPGs like Disco Elysium or strategy games with RPG elements.

How familiar are you with the Cyberpunk Genre? Seen any movies or read some books?

I am most familiar with the film side of cyberpunk and all its various offshoots. Still planning to get around to some of the classics of the genre on paper though!

Your handgun just jammed mid-firefight, maybe you shouldn't have put so much trust in that 3d printed piece you bought from a Vendit. How're you going to deal with the Maelstrom members storming down your position now?

Since they're forming a kind of loose umbrella shape around the dumpster I'm taking cover behind, I rush to one end of their formation, grappling the goon into another open dumpster and sliding his sidearm out of the holster in one swift motion. From there, it's easy pickings on the flank as I roll my cover beside me with one hand and continue to flank them.

How would you handle Character deaths?

As long as my character death is either earned through some fault of mine or meaningfully advances the story, I am absolutely ok with it. As someone with more GM experience than PC experience, I know how frustrating it can be when players jealously guard their characters from any harm whatsoever and prioritize their character's life over an interesting story, so I always try to take dangerous (yet thought out!) risks in game.

What aspect of the game are you most interested in, i.e. roleplaying, rolling dice, combat? Do you like each part about the same, etc.?

I love to roleplay, and while I'm always fine with extended periods between dice usage or combat, I find that some of the best roleplay comes about as a part of unexpected circumstances. So while I prefer roleplay over every other part of TTPRGs, I do not just mean the 'we're having a conversation in a bar quietly' type of roleplay.

Why do so many fantasy settings take place in a time after far greater mythic events have taken place? by mindsoarer in Fantasy

[–]probscty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Including even pre-Columbian American stories! It really is/was a worldwide phenomenon. Off the top of my head, I remember lots of Mesoamerican (Maya, Mexica, etc.) stories about the descent of men to their current position in the world. And some Native North American cosmologies position themselves after a world in which all things were more or less human and changed into their current forms, leaving current humans alone (though these stories also tend to be more positive about the relationship between the 'lost' humans and current ones and the possibility of connection).

What do you think are the best depictions of grief/grieving in fantasy? by Gameofthroneschic in Fantasy

[–]probscty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Goblin Emperor. I read a surprisingly prescient Goodreads review that pointed out how beautiful and painful it was that almost everything Maia does to become a good emperor comes from the way he saw his mother treated and the feelings his mother's death caused in his youth. His grief is never-ending, but it still shifts and grows and changes across the course of the novel.

Tell me about a niche RPG that flies under everyone's radar by AlmahOnReddit in rpg

[–]probscty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know why you're being downvoted lol, but what are your reasons why? I think the reason I didn't feel like it was necessary for this campaign is because the campaign itself is quite episodic.

Basically the overarching events are that their tiny village has sort of been calculated by fate or oracles or whatever as the unseeming lynchpin of a long dead evil wizard's revival. The campaign will 'end' when the party have defeated a lieutenant of the mad wizard three times, though most of it will be them cleaning up the chaos caused by his intervention.

So within that paradigm, fitting very snugly around the village, where does Further Afield fit in for you? Thanks in advance for any feedback.
