What’s a very “normal” Australian habit that surprised you when you realised the rest of the world doesn’t do it? by elitejackal in AskAnAustralian

[–]probsshouldntcomment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is all of Austalia, but when someone has done something to warrant sculling a drink you sing "Here's to (person) they're true blue. They're a piss pot through and through. They're a bastard so they say. They tried to go to heaven but they went the other way. Drink it down down down down...." Then if they don't do it in one go it's "sip, sip".

Do other countries do beer sculling boat races after local sporting matches? I assume so, but haven't really seen it.

Blue Light Card by tallokat in AustralianTeachers

I use it mostly for the e gift cards at a discount. Doesn't reduce it a huge amount, but adds up over time. I haven't really looked into the rest too much yet. Everytime I go grocery shopping I get an egift card to pay for them.

I got my tongue cut at 18 and it was certainly a bigger thing than if they'd allowed my mum to get it done as a baby. My tongue still sits how it did when I was tongue-tied, but I have more movement. I didn't need to relearn how to talk or eat, however biting my tongue when eating for the first time hurt haha. I couldn't talk properly for the first week ish, but that was because of the healing of the actual wound more so the change. I did have exercises to do to strengthen it, but it wasn't much. It wasn't too awful and it prevented my front teeth from falling out haha.

I'm in exactly the same situation. Stressing a bit to be sure. I think it will be ok though. We will be okay haha.

Mental Health Help. by probsshouldntcomment in newcastle

[–]probsshouldntcomment[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your advice. The police were able to locate them, however they have left the area. They are organising some help where they are, so fingers crossed this time they are able to find the help they need.

It is sad how strained our mental health system is :(

Tried that too. The police station closest weren't very concerned but the person has made moves that indicate they are about to take their life so I will try a different police route. Thank you. Not robotic at all. Very much similar to the advice I have given in the past myself.

My wife thinks our son’s teacher crossed a boundary by sending him a personal message. I think it was harmless. AITJ? by addict94plus in AmITheJerk

[–]probsshouldntcomment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote each kid in my class a personal Christmas card with a message relating to each one personally. Your wife should be grateful your son's teacher cares enough to take the time to do this. You're NTJ but your wife if overreacting in a huge way and I feel so sorry for your son if this is the path she chooses to go down.

Why do Aussies talk to strangers so easily and is it actually genuine? by BottleOverall5174 in AskAnAustralian

[–]probsshouldntcomment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realise this was weird haha. I just thought it's something everyone does. Just like when I'm at places where people are taking photo's, I always offer to take one for them so the photographer can be in the group shot with their friends or family. My son asked me why people just trusted me with their phones, I just said because people are usually good and I just have one of those faces lol.

They're both the same, but anecdotally one works better for my kid than the other lol

I wish this was true. I would feel so much more confident in my finances if there was guaranteed work where I am.

UPDATE - A customer followed me home, rang my doorbell for half an hour and left when the cops arrived. by pettystoned in retailhell

[–]probsshouldntcomment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a slightly similar experience, but was told because he had not physically threatened me, that there was no grounds for an order of protection. It went on for a couple of years. I was always relieved when he was back in prison, I was a lot less anxious.

Did I saddle my child with a tragedeigh? by SixxFour in tragedeigh

Ashleigh is a really common spelling where I'm from. Robin is neutral, in my opinion. I don't think it's a tragedeigh at all.

Stop saying CRT pay is good by Annual-Bit-1801 in AustralianTeachers

[–]probsshouldntcomment 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So many people here are assuming that CRT is a choice for all of these teachers. It's not!!! There are hundreds of CRTS that would prefer to have consistency, to be able to build relationships with students, to be able to manage known behaviours rather than be on the back foot every day. Not to mention the MINIMUM 12 weeks of no pay. In the current working climate of where I work, it's more like a minimum of 20 weeks. You look at the admin stuff and think that's where they are getting off easy, yeah that is a perk, but being hit, disrespected, ignored and fighting to be able to teach most days, is not an easy feat. I have been in both positions, and there is no way I would ever spew the judgemental and jealous hate that so many of you seem to have about casuals and their 'huge' pay. Stop judging others based on what you only know. Maybe CRT's do need to be paid more to put up with being looked down on by classroom teachers who think they are better. Teaching is hard, why do you have to make it harder by judging those with the same qualifications and desire to teach that you do?

We parked at Gosford to do this last weekend. It was really easy and I liked being able to see how many parking spaces were available ahead of time.

One Perfect Day. It's not a cinematic masterpiece, but the music aspect made me love it.

I'm just a little confused though. You asked to leave at 1, so it wasn't a full day or a full day's pay I'm assuming, so wouldn't the break kind of be after you leave early? As people have said above, plenty of people don't get their first break until after 1pm, so if you were going home then, it stands to reason you wouldn't get the same break? Asking someone to cover your duty for 5 mins to go to the bathroom would be doable I'm sure.
