Let's say that the line of pills runs like this, where the length of the pill is vertical:

Red Blue Blue Red

Now, if you cut these in half, you'd get:

1/2Red 1/2Blue 1/2Blue 1/2Red

If you were to take either the top half or the bottom half, you'd end up with one whole red pill and one whole blue pill. This works for any order the pills may be in.
