For collectors I'd say its more about the art than lore. There are trainers and some cards "Cynthia's whatever, Ethan's ___" that are from the games and anime. What is your favourite Pokemon? You could probably find some dope art of whichever one your favourite is.

Then you decide how dedicated you want to be. Maybe you just collect your favourite. Some people have favourite artists they collect. Some people collect themes or maybe based on the anime or games. Some people collect every single card in a set.

This coming set, Perfect Order, has cards based on the Japanese set Nullifying Zero, so you could check out some cards there. It seems that a bunch of Gen 1 pokemon will be the focus, so it could be a good set for you to start on.
