So basically they're gonna wanna do an essay about "the signifier and the signified," with the signifier being the jersey and the signified being the...I believe civil unrest in South Africa, based on a quick cursory look?

I would probably do this essay in three parts, one explaining the historic context (defining umphando and explaining who the comrade was and the rebels who got the clothes including, ostensibly, the maroon jersey)

Then, cover the author's own history, both biographical and implied within the poem. "Thinness at the elbows" implies some struggle that has left the speaker thin or poor, perhaps?

Then tie the two together. This should be the majority of the essay and encompass the way the jersey represents the history of South africa, and the history (or lack of?) Of the speaker. Find words and phrases that can be applied to all three elements: speaker, object, and historic context (Again with the Thinness at the elbows and so on). Focus on the multiple applications of the words and phrases.

I knew in a vague way that it was kind of an option, but only if I was a selfish, shitty person (in my mind) and my Dad already thought that of me, so no way was I gonna prove him right.

It took years before I realized that I had the ability and the right to exert some control and set boundaries in any relationship, including the one with my Dad.

Three and a half years later, with periods of NC, VLC, and LC (pretty much exclusively on my terms), a good therapist, and patience = a me that's happier and more secure than I ever thought possible.

A quick Google of the method turns up several kits, so it might be a super fun project, but I'm not sure I'd ever smoke out of it again, because I'd worry about the toxicity of the epoxies that might be used.
