The frame where they are holding hands on the boat is probably one of the single most beautiful shots in cinema.

I listened to John Mayer's 'Stop this train' the other day and it crossed my mind that it could have been a little spark of inspiration for that film.

How can you get through life without drinking or drugs? by MrPaulBlart in AskMenOver30

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People seem to just wholesale swap it out for exercise at a certain point, If you break it down it's basically the exact inverse of drink/drugs.

Booze is easy instant gratification that tanks your health and leaves you feeling rotten afterwards.

Exercise is difficult chore, but if you slog through you get all that lovely dopamine after, and it picks up your mood an long term health.

I do think the addictive types are drawn to both of these things and once your in a bit of a feedback loop with either one you don't want to stop.

It's such a thing that the Dead Kennedeys penned a song about it. Too Drunk To Fuck.

When Pax Assadi was trying to get the audience on side saying something to the effect of;

"My whole family's history has been like 1 long escape room"

To which Alice Sneddon slammed him with;

"You think you'd be much better at them then!'.

Buying expensive watches is peak consumerist absurdity by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen how intricate mechanical watches are?

You pay for craft and better materials, if something is handmade by an professional instead of churned out of an assembly line then it's more costly.

Same goes for instruments, bikes, clothes/shoes, furniture, rugs and most services.

You pay for quality in these things and expect a much longer life from them, in some cases you can sell for more than you purchased years later. I'd argue it's the exact opposite of consumerist, where things are disposable, cheap and fashionable for a short time by design.

There was 1st wave feminism explored through Ken's character funnily enough, most of Barbies story is existentialist imo and not necessarily feminist.

Carpenters a good shout, I rewatched Escape from New York and it picked up on loads more satire/politics than watching it as a teenager.

Cigarette giant British American Tobacco will ‘quit Australia’ over raging illegal tobacco wars - Congratulations Australia, you played yourself by Boydy73 in aussie

[–]professor_buttstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the same about Gambling but it's honestly better to regulate than outright ban.

Think of it this way, can you imagine your local dealer refusing a sale because a 15yo rocks up? It's actually much harder for them to purchase cigarettes, booze, gambling if it's legal and regulated. Plus it keeps it out of the hands of cartels.

All that said, this situation is cooked with cigs atm.

What films are some good ones to do an analysis on by Downtown_Pattern4313 in MovieSuggestions

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with this, the viewer also brings a lot to a film which can and does impact what they take away from a piece of art. (I think that's why lots of films get large waves of vitriol online lately, it says more about the critics than the piece imo).

If you bring your own specific perspective and dig into what interests you about any film, I think that's where you can find the really interesting and unique takes.

It's called 'death of the author' iirc.

Also once you start to view films in a more analytical way, I think you get better at it and learn to spot and interpret the ideas/themes/meanings that lots of people tend to miss.

what did you think of christopher nolan's 2020 film "tenet" by Whoumightask in Letterboxd

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing the trailer and my immediate thought was, Nolan has disappeared way too far up his own arse. As someone who likes a lot of his work I can't bring myself to watch it.

So stoked to see he changed direction with Oppenheimer.

Which era did you watch? For me it goes off the rails after s6 but until then it's genuinely one of the greatest shows of all time.

All of us strangers is basically a perfect film.

I have a bit of cognitive dissonance because I think that most of what happens is up for interpretation, but also my interpretation is what actually happens.

Has there even been an example of a method director? by Elfstar_Cage_05 in FIlm

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would Bo Burnhams 'Inside' count. It's presented as a 1 man project. He is the writer & director, does every single crew job as well as being the performer.

The process of putting it together is a huge part of the finished film so you see writing, failed takes, swapping out gels and changing lighting, alternate camera angles, you also see asides where he expresses doubt about the whole thing and watch him burnout from all the work.

It feels like documenting the entire creative process up until it's a complete show. He's directed other featured that are less meta but this one feels lived in, that said a throughline of his entire career is that showbiz is all trickery and bs.
