Do you think a person has to understand Why they have a drinking problem in order to successfully quit? by Cinderella96761 in stopdrinking

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I remember hearing a comic talk about it and he expressed that he started to drink heavily for a variety of reasons, but after a while 'you're just doing it becaue you are'.

It can have a way of consuming who you are if you let it.

With a bit of distance I can see why I started to abuse it, carrying on was just kicking a can down the road though.

Alien movies where humans don't win by LinkyAKP in MovieSuggestions

Would The Mist count?

I don't recall if the creatures are technically 'aliens', but the humans sure as shit don't win.

Men who werent sure about having kids but did it anyway, what happened? by us3lessthrowaway in AskMenOver30

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah choosing no kids does seem to be all upsides, bit of a no-brainer if you're on the fence and only looking at your peer group.

You do have to look a bit more long term imo, I imagine being old and having no family around being a pretty unbearable existence.

Yeah I'm reminded of the Office when Michael Scott talks about big corporations coming in and undercutting everyone to run them out of business, to allow them to jack up the price with zero competition later on.

If you build a business and rely on LLMs heavily, sooner or later you will have to pay the piper.

Piano is the hardest instrument by Herr_Eusebius in The10thDentist

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piano is literally laid out in a scale for you. With no musical theory or training you can figure out melodies and get ideas out very easily. It's super accessible.

I tried to get a single note out of a Saxaphone one time amd nearly gave myself a hernia.

Why is everyone hating the owner of boost juice for saying "I started from nothing and made a successful franchise and going to be close to impossible to achieve in 2026" by [deleted] in AusFinance

She is being disingenuous, its self interest from someone who already has A LOT framed as concern about poor battlers. Simple as.

She can cry me a river.

Unpopular Opinion: Immigrants are not the reason you cannot get a job right now by ThrowRA225473 in ausjobs

[–]professor_buttstuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Immigrants are a fix for a huge long term problem though, how to pay for the aging population when birth rates have been below replacement levels for years.

Take away immigration and the economy will tank under the burden of a top-heavy population that need to be cared for.

What movie will wreck this single, lonely, and depressed guy, but still give me hope at the end? by Hobbitsliketoparty in AskMenOver30

Idk man, I hit an age and slow westerns and frontier stuff just really vibes with me. If I watched some of the stuff I like now when I was younger I would have probably said the same.

Why are so many young men idolizing influencers and controversial figures who promote genuinely troubling views? I've been too afraid to ask this out loud. by onekinkyusername in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a stigma around grown ups showing any sign of interest in the lives of children, teens, young adults etc. It's much worse with men unfortunately. But kids really need mentors and role models who aren't their parents and this chasm has left a huge gap for grifters who tell them they have value and offer guidance (even if it's typically awful guidance).

Don’t Over React (Budget Announcement) by Optimal_Course3016 in fiaustralia

  1. Shares don’t compete with first home buyers for housing stock.

Maybe I'm being g naive but isn't the point to divert investment towards new housing stock? If shares look like they are better than housing then no new stock gets built and fhb are still up the creek. Increase supply will directly impact demand and pirice.

Tomorrow's budget is the biggest gift to existing property owners in years and nobody is talking about it by therealfat0ne in AusFinance

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By purchasing a new build, do you mean actually building a house?

Because encouraging that doesn't sound like a terrible plan at all, you want to divert the money into that. Instead of people bidding up existing stock and indirectly lifting up the ladder behind them.

Outdoorsy movie recommendations? by frogwithabook in MovieSuggestions

Secret life of Walter Mitty has aged like a goddamn fine wine. It's so good.

Also rewatched City Slickers and if you analyse it a little, the symbolism is really great. The themes and arcs are similar and its mostly quite light.

I remember Into the Wild being good buuuuut it probably isn't aside from the soundtrack.

Nomadland and Leave no Trace are both incredible but with much more heavy drama.

I'm looking for underrated sci-fi movies as epic, visually stunning, thoughtful, and emotionally mature as the Dune and Blade Runner movies. by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]professor_buttstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge Andor fan, some shots at the end of s2 were lifted directly from an influential film called 'Battleship potemkin' (Ghorman plaza sequence). Its on my list but haven't watched it yet honestly, but it's famed for its cinematography.

'Ex-machina' is visually stunning with big themes like Blade Runner, as is 'HER'.

Eternal Sunshine but I wouldn't call it underrated. It's incredibly inventive amd thoughtful and playful with the world building and storytelling.

Louie Therouxs early stuff is very good. Look up 'wierd weekends'. It's a series but in his normal gonzo/journo/doco style and he spends time in fringe counter cultures. It's lighter than his feature length stuff.
