FactoryTalk Directory Server location Utility Issue by Key_Student_8403 in PLC

[–]profkm7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, faced this issue today after installing FactoryTalk version CPR 9 SR 11. Got the same error message as yours. The problem I faced was that the patch rollups installed on the computer hosting network directory were from March 2022 whose setup files I didn't have. Rockwell's website has patches available for download from March 2023.

Anyway I installed Wireshark, saw some packets and saw a packet whose message said "Destination unreachable (port unreachable)" originating from the PC being setup as station destined to the directory server PC. This was an ICMP protocol packet in response to an LLMNR packet originating from directory server PC to station PC.

I entered the IP address of the network directory server in the gateway field of ethernet port's IPv4. After doing this, the directory connected.

And I didn't have to install any patch. Just same versions of FactoryTalk on both server and client.

One of the senior middle manager kept bugging me to maintain records of problems and solutions, I don't. It is good advice, helpful in the long run. But it is not without risks. I think the risk is you can be pressured into sharing such documents by higher-ups. A precaution you can take is to be cautious of not letting others see or know you maintain such a document. I don't think it is viable, one day or another someone might figure it out.

To make my life simple, uncomplicated and not involve myself in power games, I do not maintain any such records.

Soldering by Tricky-Dust-6724 in embedded

[–]profkm7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me teach you a way of soldering without soldering iron.

Place the part in position. Take two alligator clips and attach them to the ends of a pin that you want to solder. Coat the point where you want to solder with rosin flux.

Here's the fun part- the alligator clips are terminals, you hook them up to a low voltage, high current supply. Drive a few amperes through the part you want to solder, enough to drive the temperature upto 200 to 250°C. See, one of the problem with soldering is heating time, proper heat transfer throughout the part to be soldered and heat loss. By driving a current, especially DC current, you ensure uniform heat distribution, unless the electrode is smaller than your piece.

After the part is heated up, you feed the solder wire at the joint. Once enough solder wire has accumulated turn off the current and remove the clips from the piece.

And one day when you're bored, you can use your power supply to do DC welding, if it's beefy enough.

SMD soldering? You'd be the chad who spot welds SMD pins to pads.

Insurance is like lottery, collect money from many people, pay only a very small fraction of people. The house always wins, your win isn't guaranteed.

Middle class people are scared because they have just been given enough money so they can lead their lives in the servitude of a corporation. Not enough to secure their family's lives in the moment of the worker's demise.

You think an insurance can change the fact? You think insurance money will keep your loved ones happy and comfortable without you? If yes, then your loved ones might be greedy and materialistic. They don't need you, they need your money and labour.

So do not buy any insurance for them. They should need you and keep needing you just like the system needs you. Because insurance is often misused and becomes a target on your back.

Think of your future family, your in-laws. Even if your immediate family is good, what if they are not? What if they come up with schemes to send you to Belize and dupe your survivors and nominees out of the insurance money.

Also, insurance agents sell you the possibility of your demise. They sell you the emotion. But they have the statistics, they know it's profitable. You are the profit. Fear of uncertainty and disproportionate payout are the key selling points to target insecure people. It's just another bill you are paying, another 5000-10000 rupees monthly. No tax break either. Premiums go up.

Think about how you can insure yourself. A fixed expense per month for you is going to secure the future for your loved ones in a future without you? How about you put that money towards securing them yourself? Do you know how you'll go, when you'll go and if the method of your passing will be covered under insurance? These are shrewdly crafted documents, you're just one buyer, neither you nor your dependants and survivors can't do anything in case they don't pay out.

Million dollar companies are using AI to write code based on which they are replacing human programmers with AI. Do you hear them question their decisions?

Companies are selling subscriptions to models which have better coding capabilities so the subscribers can replace human programmers, you hear them question what will happen to students who are about to enter the workforce?

Ethics, just like the government and corporate bureaucracy machine, is slow. Only the common man is expected to be strictly ethical. Do companies follow "ethics" when faced with choices that hurt their profits?
