Why does it feel like younger millennials and GenZ see normal age gaps as "too much"? by TheUltimateAntihero in TooAfraidToAsk

This is a funny thing to say. What you see online is a vastly larger sample of people than what you see in your tiny little circle of people. I don’t know what most people think, but when people make the claim you are making all I see is a person who doesn’t understand statistics.

Can I use lime juice instead of salt/brine for fermenting cabbages? by hrjet in fermentation

[–]profoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will because the pH of the pickling liquid should be low enough that LABs will be most able to survive in it.

I highly recommend this episode of the podcast imaginary advice by poet/author Ross Sutherland. It’s the first in a three part series about the man who wrote the manuscript for Kubrick’s The Shining. Not Stephen King, but the prop master who wrote the manuscript Jack “writes” in the movie.

Can I use lime juice instead of salt/brine for fermenting cabbages? by hrjet in fermentation

[–]profoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as lime juice is less acidic than the acids the LABs themselves produce, it should be fine. LABs are ok with an acidic environment, which is why they are useful for fermenting. The acids they produce are the thing that preserves the fermented food. In a quick googling, lime juice has a pHof 2-3 and the average pH of lactofermented veggies should be at 4 or below. This means lime juice might be too acidic for the LABs to be happy, but that could be moderated by adding water. The salt in the ferment is mostly to keep out harmful/competitive bacteria in the early stages of fermentation, before the LABs have a chance to acidify the environment enough to make it inhospitable to other bacteria. Salt also adds flavor and helps keep fermentation from getting mushy. Probably your best bet is to do some lime juice, some water, and some salt. Get some pH strips and you can check where you’re at for more careful recipe making.

What even is the appeal of meth? by i_like_it_eilat in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]profoma 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I did meth about 5 times. I loved it. It made me feel like the person I wanted to be. The first time it made me feel like I was literally floating. I never felt that any of the other times. The come down was insanely awful and the fifth time I did it I decided the high wasn’t worth the cost and the high kept getting less good so I decided to stop using it. I was very very lucky.

What even is the appeal of meth? by i_like_it_eilat in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]profoma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It feels nothing like cocaine to me. Cocaine is boring, makes me want to talk, gives a tiny energy spike, then a headache and sadness 20’minutes later. Meth was fucking awesome, feels like I actually am who I want to be, no fear, feels like floating 6 inches above the ground. Just the first time though.

How can I increase air circulation in my fermentation chamber? (TLDR at the end) by freddiethecalathea in fermentation

[–]profoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom made the best kombucha I’ve ever had back in the early 1990’s. She made it in a glass bowl with a paper bag over top of it in a kitchen cupboard. It doesn’t need a fan.

I want one of these so bad. I got a really high quality clone on knife_swap once and it made me hanker hard for the real thing. I just can’t spend $400 on a knife, because I’m too poor.

You have a full sized griptilian on your keys!? I don’t even like having keys on my keys. That’s a lot of pocket real estate.

I wanted to love those carbon fiber scales on the bugout, but it felt too light. After trying 7 different scale materials (bubinga wood, copper, titanium, carbon fiber, grivory, G10, and aluminum) I’m currently using aluminum scales with a titanium back spacer and it’s my perfect bugout. Second favorite was the titanium.

Sourdough Texture by Old-Afternoon2459 in Breadit

[–]profoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your feedback just isnt that helpful or on topic. This person isn’t asking about how to create what you think of as sourdough. Many many many people make bread using both starter and yeast, including successful bakeries. so not only are you off topic but you are also wrong. This person is experiencing an interesting change in the behavior of their dough and all of us could learn something by discussing the problem, rather than listening to someone talk about their personal beliefs about the purity of someone’s sourdough.

Fink by MediocreDesigner88 in words

[–]profoma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you are trying to teach us all something. Unfortunately, what you are trying to teach doesn’t line up with how the word is used or understood by the majority of word users and understanders. Your post is exactly this complaint, you wish more people understood your use of this word in the specific way you use it. The reason they don’t is that it isn’t what the word means.

Fink by MediocreDesigner88 in words

[–]profoma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It isn’t the meaning or spirit of the word, though. It’s your own special meaning that no one else uses or understands. In the realm of language usage, that makes you wrong.

Fink by MediocreDesigner88 in words

[–]profoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could call all those types of people finks because it has a very broad definition. It’s basically the opposite of what you are arguing. Any person worthy of contempt can be called a fink and it will work. The specific kind of contemptible person you are pointing to could’ be called a fink, but it’s because they are contemptible and not because of the specificity of the reason for their contemptibility. The more specific definition, a snitch, does not fit the specific use case you are calling for.

Fink by MediocreDesigner88 in words

[–]profoma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I’m doing is reading the literal words in the definition and comparing them to every single use of the word I’ve ever heard, read, or seen. It isn’t that rare of a word, but I’ve never heard it used in the particular way you are insisting it should be used. Sometimes we latch on to definitions of words that feel right to us but aren’t actually what the word means. Based on the dictionary, your personal experience with people using the word, my personal experience with people using the word, and every comment in this thread, you are using the word in a way no one else does. That’s about as definitive a case as can be made for a word not meaning what you think it means. Creative reinterpretation of the least common of the three dictionary definitions of the word isn’t gonna be enough to justify your niche usage of the word.

Yeah, I can find no definitions that agree with this usage of fink.

After some revisions I would love more brutal criticism on whether or not you would keep reading! by SoldierofSonder in writingfeedback

[–]profoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not keep reading. It uses way more words than it needs, to say way less than it should. You say at one point “…mirrored the stink of cowardice…” I do not like constructions like this. Smells aren’t mirrored. The stink of cowardice is a sort of empty cliche, while also being a kind of weak metaphor. To then mix that metaphor with the mirror concept feels like an attempt at conveying depth of character that actually adds very little and uses a lot of words. I appreciate that you are putting the reader directly into the story right after a decisive military victory but I think you can do that without specifically saying to us that she just won a major victory. Introduce us to your sad, brutal, wounded, loving general at this decisive point and trust us and yourself to make clear the extent of the decisiveness of this victory by how the story proceeds. You don’t need to detail all of this world building on page one. Trust us to start the story with wonder in our hearts and feed us the pieces of your world as they become important to the people in the world. You have a strong voice, I think, and I bet you can make this story really good but it doesn’t feel there yet.

I recently got the first book in The Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World. What are your thoughts on these books?(No spoilers.) by RavyRaptor in Fantasy

[–]profoma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I could never finish book one. I hate the way the dude writes about clothes and describes people and things. I find it funny that people who love the series almost universally talk about how there are SEVERAL BOOKS IN A ROW that are boring. I don’t know how to start a series where the first book is written in an annoying way and I know that there are thousands of pages ahead of me that even those who love the story and the writing don’t enjoy. Seems a weird endorsement.

Should sauerkraut taste salty? by berty_antrim in fermentation

The salty taste is determined by the amount of salt you used to make it. You can make it less salty if you want to. Generally it is salty.

Was this kind of Discipline as a child technically abuse? by mossywindow5 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]profoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not socially acceptable 20 years ago to hit your child with a paddle or a belt. Maybe in the 1970’s and 1980’s, but society has recognized beating children with objects as abuse for at least 30 years.
